  • Port Melbourne was once the place where both cargo and migrants would arrive on sailing ships from across the world to start a new life down under. It also saw many young men leave to fight for Queen/King and Country via Princes Pier, which used to have a long railway to take cargo all the way to Flinders Street Station (the disused platform now converted into the Arbory Pub).
On a particularly windy day 🍃, we start at the Port Melbourne tram stop before walking over to the Spirit Station pier and around the Bay Trail. Obvious sights include the lighthouse as well as the cargo cranes in the distance. Of course, we make a stop at Princes Pier with its distinctive wooden pillars.
Princes Pier was completed in 1915 and was widely used until 1969. After that, with the containerisation of cargo, the pier was unused and fell into disrepair, closed to the public in the 1990s. Luckily, it was refurbished and reopened to the public 2011 with the version we see now. The original pier was much longer - the wooden pillars in the water marks how far out it used to go.
We then continue on the long Bay Trail and walk past more beaches to reach Sandridge Ridge. The structure is called Sandridge Lookout, where you can take a look at the city from up high. You'll notice a bit of metallic howling - that's actually how the structure seems to deflect the wind, generating the noise.
As a bit of an extra, we also walk all the way round to the edge of the container port where we can see containers being loaded onto ships.
