This will always be the ultimate, because what no one can ever replicate is the ENERGY of that last 90 seconds. That was literal magic in that theater for that audience, I can't even imagine what the room must've been like.
She riffed A LOT here,. compared to her final Broadway performance, but because she's Shoshana Bean, she makes the riffing work for the character, though she also was giving her all for her fans with this performance, and trying to go out with a bang! She succeeds.
100% succeeds! She makes the riffing part of her defiance and anger. Many singer riff just to riff, and shoshana is guilty of that at times, but here she made it work. You can hear the anger and sadness and raw emotion in everything she did. Amazing performance, yet to be matched in my eyes!
The amazing thing about this is she just sounds so in character, like she actually IS Elphaba, she's not just trying to sing prettily. You can tell she's really feeling it. That is talent.
Am I the only one who likes the "screaming"? I would actually call it cheering. I feel like it adds to the performance and the excitement. Shoshana's performance brings me to tears every time I watch this!
Shoshana singing will be the only time I will scream "YAS GIVE IT TO ME SISTER" while watching Broadway. This performance gives me goosebumps every single time
The part that gets me, that I could listen to on a loop for all eternity, is when she sings "I'm flying high, defy-i-I-ing gravity." And soon I'll match them in reknown is the next line but that defy-i-I-ing riff is one I've never heard another Elphaba replicate and it's so unique and amazing!!! Chills.
The screaming doesn't seem to bother me as much as it does the other people, you can still hear Sho and it just doesn't bother me, and weirder still, the majority of the posts on this are about how terrible the screaming are, if you go to Eden's 12/30/07 show or Kerry's last before Broadway, there was ALOT more screaming and it was louder and more throughout, and there isn't alot of complaining there.
In Brazil during the final performance the audience sang the song with her. That was absolutely incredible. I can't imagine how that had to feel having the audience that captivated
adore her like no other. there used to be another one of these... not sure where it went, but I'm glad this is here. I love to listen to her tons of amazing riffs. lol.
Imagine going from playing a small ensemble role in Hairspray to playing THIS! Let that sink deep into your mind! Just think about that for one moment!
Her 'look to the western sky' is EVERYTHING! look at how many elphies since have coppied that. many people have been praised for that phrasing (eden), but it was originally Shoshana's riff.
i dont need to even comment on sho. its obvious she is fantastic and this performance was wonderful, but I cannot remember who it is, but loooooove madam morribles wicked witch scream.
Ok, she sang REALLY good. I mean...perfectly. Even better than Willemijn Verkaik, who is my Elphie number 1. I think Shoshana is well underated. Guess its because she was Elphaba for too short time.
Sho isn’t underrated as Elphaba and she actually ran for quite a while. She was just Elphaba a very long time ago and there have been many many many that have come after her. But no, she isn’t underrated. She is considered still to this day one of the best originators of the Elphaba role, if not the best vocally.
Yeah I think it varies by the audience...I saw it once with SJB and nobody screamed when she went up, then I saw it with Marcie Dodd when she did her bway run and when she took off flying everybody went crazy.
Thanks for posting this but I don't agree with posters deleting negative comments. Unless they're offensive, then It's a form of censorship that I don't really think supports what the internet is all about. It would be very boring if everyone liked the same stuff, and people are allowed to express their dislike of any thing. Art prompts reaction, and whether its good or bad is not important. xxx
This is THE best defying gravity performance ever hands down ..it's not even about her being my favorite or not..it's just never been done like this before..EPIC
well you could see Rent now actually..both the movie and it live on Broadway. They filmed the last show on Broadway and released it on DVD. So you could watch them both and get both experiences! :)..For me personally, minus the screaming of course, the stage production will always beat out a film production!! :)
I'm going to see Wicked in February... I almost don't want to go, seeing as it won't be Shoshana Bean performing... After listening to this, how can any other Elphaba compare?
@@seangocrazyyy amazingly I do! Haha. It was Donna Vivino, you should look her up on RUclips! She was absolutely incredible and while she was touring I saw her in Wicked 3x 💛
i dont need to even comment on sho. its obvious she is fantastic and this performance was wonderful, but I cannot remember who it is, but loooooove madam morribles wicked witch scream.

agreed!!! it sounds so boring without it
Shoshana singing will be the only time I will scream "YAS GIVE IT TO ME SISTER" while watching Broadway. This performance gives me goosebumps every single time
Look to the western sky is beyond anything I can put into words...
And the final note. Sho is really in the top 5 there has ever been
It’s not even human. It’s cosmic. 😭😭😭
This is what I call 'going out with a BANG'. Damn, Sho! Slay us!
I'm sorry. I would have been screaming as well - "look to the WESTERN SKY!"- lol. Shoshona served it.
HOLY COW!
She defied the SHIT out of gravity!!
That is one of the most mental.... And appealing high belted notes I have heard in a long time
Sho:AAAAhAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Me: *crying on my bed because of how breathtaking this is*
That first MEEEE DOWN. OMFG.
I KNOW RIGHT? She is so underated! I barely see people mentioning her.
Man the Elphabas from 2003-2008 were on a different level.
I think this is one of the most amazing DG I have ever heard. So many intresting variations, chills every time I listen to this! Go Shoshana

Eden, Carmen, Saycon, Rachel Tucker and Alice Fearn have a very similar riff when they sing Defying Gravity
Samuel who and they still don’t even come close to Shoshana :)
@@dylanhafner7608 YESSSSS
Shoshana Bean’s talent is out of this world!!! I met her on the street in NYC in 2003- she was so gracious and kind- love her!

I've heard this song thousands of times and this will always be my favorite performance of it
I love the "Ahahaha" riff
adore her like no other.

Amazing, as always!!!! To the people complaining about the screaming in the audio - buy tickets and go yourself :)
asdfghjason I agree, but not everyone has enough money to go to this show, it's expensive as hell.
Caleb Barrera 130 that's the price of a flight...
Imagine going from playing a small ensemble role in Hairspray to playing THIS!
Let that sink deep into your mind! Just think about that for one moment!
it's the "solo"😭😭
I'm not even a Shoshana fan and this made me cry?
One of the best endings to this song I've ever heard. Wow. And I'm a die-hard Idina fan.
I think there is a video of this somewhere. It is ultra rare, crystal clear picture, and unreleased. Or so i'm told... YOU ROCK SHOSHO!
I remember a super blurry video of this, bit never a clear video, sadly
This. This is the best performance of defying gravity...ever...
one thing I didn't care for was look to the western sky. but I loved this! I can even look past the "Jown" usually it bugs me lol
jown?? sorry but sho never alters her consonants. it may sound like that on this recording, but it didn't sound like 'jown' live.
Her 'look to the western sky' is EVERYTHING! look at how many elphies since have coppied that. many people have been praised for that phrasing (eden), but it was originally Shoshana's riff.
+Jonathon Olson the first one was defiantly Jown.
never sounds like it live. But she most certainly does not belt the "D" - and for good reason lol
i dont need to even comment on sho. its obvious she is fantastic and this performance was wonderful, but I cannot remember who it is, but loooooove madam morribles wicked witch scream.
THIS IS AMAZING.
THE FIRST BRING ME DOWN
OMFG IVE ACTUALLY GOT GOOSEBUMPS
Girl! Slay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't get any better than this
Just saw her in concert, absolutely breathtaking she's incredible
shoshana is so amazinggggg like words cannot describe hr amazingness
Forever the bestttt.

@@billygorr9262 Well, for me she is underrated, cause everyone talks about Idina, Willemijn and anothers and forget about her
OK..everytime I watch this video it just makes me SMILE.....I love SHO!!!

OMG! Thank you so much!
Shoshana gave me three waves of goosebumps
You're in for an amazing show with Donna :D She is SO fantastic. I haven't heard much of Chandra
shes so melismatixc i LOVE ITT and always try and copy her when i sing this :D
chills. literal chills.
Her 'me down' is absolutely chilling. I love it.
I think my face melted off
Her mom is my dance teacher! Go Sho! ;D
well, maybe she is screaming at some parts, but that are real emotions coming out of her!!!
It's hard to imagine the energy without movie
it's her last on tour. in Toronto.
She did her last show on the same day Idina did hers in London
Morrible is Alma Cuervo
Cool. I'm crying now. That's fine.
Imagine this is someone's first time ever seeing Wicked

This. Is. Insanity. #perfect
LOOK TO THE WESTERN SKYYY!!!!! Get It Sho!!!!!
I love her and her Elphaba!
That is absolutely correct... Either not a lot of people get that or they just don't care! :)
Yessssss. Workkkkkk Shoshana!!!!!!

Yeah that video is only of the end, and is of a DG with JLT or something. I don't think I've ever seen the video to this performance x

I hate the screaming! I'm with you on that! It's actually not proper for theater! It's not a concert!
Seeing it in Tampa.
With Donna and Chandra.
Awesome riffs!
Can you please No Good Deed and For Good? Thanks so much!
Was this her last ever one in December 2006?
Completely Understandable! And completely frustrating! I hate it when computers freeze! Haha.
Do you have her last NGD on tour? I'd be forever grateful.
6:06
thank god for this comment
Jeez, it is taking awhile isn't it?
Where are you seeing it?
All the casts are great right now :)
I didn't like the western sky because she nearly screamed it.I did like her first flying portion "defying gravity"
Riffs are hard to do if you cant control what you're doing
killoa2002 she’s got control oozing out of her
You clap!!!! Then Stand or do both at the same time :) Shoshana is amazing by the way. haha
Perfact 💥
she is my mom
oh dear jesus.....
sho's amazing!!! and i would hate to sit next to this person whos screaming the whole time.
Shut up!!!! This video needs to be found! I want to see it lol
Defying gravity boring? i think not. and its awesome if people scream. but not the one whos taping the performance cuz then the vocals get toned out
how did you rent it?
