I wish you well with your glove80. I had been using mine for a year and I thought it was going to be my endgame keyboard, and I just never could get back to the speed I had before using it and just had a decent amount of mistakes I could just never shake off. I really loved the idea of the keywell and having it bring more keys into reach... but it's just my hands I think, it really just didn't work for me. I just couldn't comfortably reach the number row, and the keys below the alpha block were also awkward and I could only comfortably use 3 of the thumb cluster keys.
I really think it's just me as so many people love theirs and I really wanted to love mine, which is why I gave it a whole year of trying. I found that a smaller boards is better for me, like a ferris sweep or an Atreus and at that size, the key well doesn't matter because it's all in reach and comfortable. I literally picked up 10 wpm the day I switched from my glove80 that I had been using every day for a year, to my old Atreus I hadn't touched at all in that year. It broke my heart... expensive lesson but now I know what my hands like.

I get that. At first, I experimented with different thumb positions to get things comfortable and I made a lot of mistakes. What helped for me is hovering my hands rather than using the wrist rests. This lets me move my hands just a little to make it overall more comfortable.
But for my hands, it's very comfortable and I'm using most of the thumb keys. The bottom row is very comfortable for me as well.

I find your reasoning to be quite interesting and I really like that you make the layout as comfortable for yourself as you can.
Looking forward to the glove80 review I bet you will drown in engrammer layout configuration😅

I'm loving the glove80 so far. I'm pretty close to having a layout I'm happy with so I'll have to see how long it lasts

You might want to look at sunaki's glove 80 symbol layout. It solves your problems with engram for symbols. He has a RUclips video and blog post about it. I translated his layout to my Corn-ish 40%. split layout using 2 symbol layers.

You should really try Miryoku :) I use just 36 keys on my Kinesis Advantage, and I couldn't be happier. I totally revised the sym-layer, somewhat along the way of your thinking.

I love to see how others lay things out, but it's crazy how personalized things get once you go down these rabbit holes that 99% of the time when I look at what other people are doing I completely disagree with them lol. Just a few different life experiences can have dramatic effects in layout preference. I did data entry for years so the numpad layout is more comfortable for me so my number layer has that in my right hand, which led me to lay out my symbols over in the same numpad shape bc that makes sense in my head.
One thing that I think we agree on is, fewer layers is better. Being able to hold your entire multi-layer layout in your head without thinking very hard is the most important thing. I try to optimize the hell out of the keys directly under my fingers. Having several small specialized layers is not as good as 1 really well optimized but full layer that plays well with modifiers.
Additionally, like it or not, qwerty is still dominant and for any devices you have to interact with that have embedded keyboard like laptops or if you have to use a pc that isn't yours, I prefer not to embarrass myself as someone who types for a living if I have to use one. For this reason never even tried the engram symbol mapping and used engrammer which aligns more with normal qwerty shift modifiers and shifted number symbol locations.
Also, I recently decided z and q are honestly used with such infrequency that I can actually put them on another layer bc it's not worth reaching for and that opened up some interesting things.

Yeah it's very interesting 😂 I currently don't have to use other peoples' computers often but maybe one day it'll bite me in the butt

I assume you’ve gotten the Glove80 by now. I hope you love it as much as I do!
I also wanted to say that I really enjoy your keymap videos. You’ve done a great job explaining concepts, such as the mental cost of switching layers, that I’ve been aware of on some level but couldn’t quite articulate or identify. I’m about to take a long look at my keymap and apply some of your principles because I need to optimize it for sure. I look forward to seeing a video on your Glove80 layout, if you haven’t already made one.

Yes I'm very much enjoying my glove 80! I've actually made very few changes to my layout since I started it a few months ago. I think it's almost time for me to make that video now that I'm fully adapted to it
