i was doing this like 25 years ago with father he reached me on some boards for fun when I was younger. I was using just normal black marker it was working perfect and than acid and after it clear board ! Damnnnn you bring me some good old memories back ! Muck love from Serbia !

Straight out of school, I worked in a test lab at Standard Telephones, where we tested thickness of the copper on the boards like this, and with a radioactive method too, but I was mainly an observer, and a computer took up a whole factory level and had to have a controled environment with airlocks on the doors! :)

Agreed. I don't even mess with things dangerous enough to kill. A power supply looks fun, but I'm only trained to work with low voltages and amps. Poking a meter into something with 2 amps scares the life out of me and I've never done it.
Remember seeing a lot of those small relays in amps or very similar, pretty sure they still are using these relays a lot in house amps/receivers for different things including multi channel speaker switching to turn output on or off as needed depending on audio profile you're using, stereo vs 5.1 etc. I here my onkyo tonking away quietly when I first power it up and when I'm changing things around in audio profiles. Something rather satisfying about quiet but solid sounding tiny thuds of relays switching in an amp makes me think high quality components even if they are a fairly cheap part taking the effort to incorporate them into the circuit makes a nice touch 😊

Great vid. People might use instead of Volt/Amp meter only a voltmeter that shows volts and amps by toggle switch. Just to make more cheap but effective. One position of a switch will measure volts on the output, the other position will measure voltage drop on the one ohm resistor 25w (current sensor). Voltage drop across one ohm equals amps I=U/R. Power rating of a resistor P=I² x R, so for 5A 1 Ohm it's a 25w resistor, OR 5 x 5w, 5 Ohm in parallel.
interesting idea, did not consider the possibility of something like that all. it is possible to have a cleaner, more minimal setup and not rely on the current passthrough of the ammeter this way. potentially (no pun intended) more accurate results as well
When I was young, I made PCBs the way you showed. I used tar dissolved in laquer thinner. It dried quickly and covered the copper of the PCB in a good way, it was etch resistant. Later I used an Edding 3000 pen and a ruler. This gave nicer results. But I didn't like the way the PCBs came out. In my opinion it wasn't tidy enough. Also if you needed two or more PCBs, it was a lot of work, so later I switched to PCBs with photoresist and a PC layout application. I still make my prototypes at home this way!

Probably already answered, but copper and iron have different electrode potentials, so copper can replace ferric ions in solution, and the result will be a mixture of ferric chloride ferrous chloride and cuprous chloride. Cuprous chloride is green, ferric and ferrous chlorides are yellow so mixed solution looks black.

The two common ways of etching: Nitric acid and copper : 4 HNO3(l) + Cu(s) ==> Cu(NO3)2(s and aq) + 2 NO2(g) + 2 H2O(l). The solution Sorin is using is Ferric Chloride Acid: which changes the Copper Solids to Ions like this 2Fe3+ + Cu (solid) 2Fe2+ + Cu2+ . Sorin could have sped up the process by removing the board rinsing it in water and then proceeding this would remove the precipates slowing down the reaction.

Despite of being 3+ hours into it, you keep on going until the fault has been found. Nice job. It was an interesting problem: the base of the small NPN of the short-protection circuit would reach max 0.7 volts, and at only the slightest drop of that voltage, it would stop conducting and allow the zener voltage to go up, causing the relay to shutdown the output. That's why it needed a quite big capacitor. Such faults are hard to find. There is already a capacitor, so you know that the reaction is slowed down. But in this case, the first try of the capacitor was too small. The relay switch: if the common pin is at the supply side and the normally-close pin at the output side, you can connect a short protection indicator LED to the normally-open pin of the relay. If your relay is in the opposite direction, you cannot do this indicator. And you cannot swap the pins easily, because it is on a PCB. That's why I love to build such stuff in mid air. When it is all done, it can be isolated and made stronger with the help of hot glue, or, transferred to a PCB, if you need to make more of them. PCBs are good for mass-production. Not for prototyping.
I guess it's ok, and it works! But, the time and effort you put into this you could have got it much smaller and neater by using brown wrapping tape. You cut strips out and create a negative space to create the traces. Color it in with pen/paint and then remove the tape. Now you have a near perfect looking PCB. Use tinner to tin the pads, and then follow up with UV solder mask. You can get professional looking hand made PCB's that can be used for SMD components. It's an artform for sure, but one I've had to master because CNC's are expensive, and JLC isn't useful when I need a prototype now. I get better results doing this than I do with the photosensitive method and a printer. Plus, doing it by hand is part of the fun and the reason for doing it.

Thank you Sorin, Here is a summary of the changes you made during testing, please tell me if the following is correct: 1 -You removed the 1 Ohm 10W resistor bridging the 10KOhm variable resistor on top of the 3rd current limiting transistor, without replacement. 2- You added a 1 KOhm resistor bridging the relay switch connectors. 3- The relay is connected in the "Normally closed" position. 4- You replaced the 22uF capacitor by a bigger one, say (220 uF 50V). 5- Added a 12v diode(1N4007) bridging the coil of the relay 6- What exactly did you do with Zener diode beside changing it to 12V? Correct? Anything else?
sometimes it is not the cost of buying the power supply it is the whole purpose of a hobby to do it yourself. whether for the experience or the knowledge to do it.

Because of protection circuit it is shorted then if your RC constant it is high, then your RL output shorted before completing RC constant reach max It is ocuurring your RC canstant resetting becuase of output short condition(no current flow to protection circuit base) so 1ohm->RL current flow in state protection circuit Zero volts so your C value it is needed more less than 1uF Also Before problem it is not completed state it is still adaptable becuase of your output short and then open output and after your RC constant time over and then RL continue connection it is to able to output Voltage and cuurrent well.

Im at 3:17:09 and im going to make the guess that the first transistor is effectively sinking all the current for the zener. I think you need a npn pnp combo rather than npn and npn. Thats my guess. That circuit brings up allot of questions for me. I don’t understand how the zener could regulate unless it’s supposed to regulate the base. I figured it would be in series idk, zeners are a bit of a mystery atm
“You cannot kill a transistor by shorting collector and base” Transistor: That was absolutely hilarious. He was talking about shorting 35v across the collector and relay coil. The Zener is killing u. Just use a resistor divider. When u said u cant short C and E I believe you were talking about bringing the pins while in circuit. It was priceless. I took pictures of this circuit as to play with later

Sorin: It would be just as easy for you to look up the simpe formulae and the strength of your solution and calculate exactly howmuch solution you need, just like balancing your voltages. In fact you could probably measure the voltge that is causing the copper to dissolve as in a battery.
Is BD237 powerful enough? In the specs it only stands 35 whatts, but if it must transfer the shorted current that pass through the relay, there is more like 80 to 120 whatts no?
I'm only at 3:09:00 but I am ask myself, you buy a power supply to rip out the shortcircuit protection. So 'we' can use the current limiting to find a shorted component. Why add a shotcircuit protection if you have current limiting in this ps? Also: high quality explanation worthy of the titel 'school' And if you heat the ferric acid to about 30 - 35 celsius 86 - 95 farhenheit it wil be much faster.
Hi, I would like to ask you if you can give me some advice on the repair of the SR Tecnolgy Live 220 speaker amplifier board. The customer brought me the speaker with 2 woofer speakers which they mounted with the coil excursion nailed. There was the low frequency fuse that had been bypassed by bridging a wire, I don't know what damage it could have caused to the circuit...... I reset the fuse, the audio signal comes out of the speaker, good on the late frequency dirty and vibrant on the lows; I changed the control and amplification IC but nothing changed; what could it depend on? Thank you

I tried building like this..but I used lm317 and 3 tip3055 transistor...the problem is i cant control the current..instead i add a fix current control resistor..but I like yours more...

I worked for a guy that couldn't stand that my PCBs worked first time, every time. He didn't realize that was after many years of boom, pop & smoke. 🤣

Use tinner to tin the pads, and then follow up with UV solder mask. You can get professional looking hand made PCB's that can be used for SMD components. It's an artform for sure, but one I've had to master because CNC's are expensive, and JLC isn't useful when I need a prototype now. I get better results doing this than I do with the photosensitive method and a printer. Plus, doing it by hand is part of the fun and the reason for doing it.

Here is a summary of the changes you made during testing, please tell me if the following is correct:
1 -You removed the 1 Ohm 10W resistor bridging the 10KOhm variable resistor on top of the 3rd current limiting transistor, without replacement.
2- You added a 1 KOhm resistor bridging the relay switch connectors.
3- The relay is connected in the "Normally closed" position.
4- You replaced the 22uF capacitor by a bigger one, say (220 uF 50V).
5- Added a 12v diode(1N4007) bridging the coil of the relay
6- What exactly did you do with Zener diode beside changing it to 12V?

relay is NO: normally open (open refers to the state of the switch=no connection)
actually I think you were right, I confused the coil of the relay and the switch! the Relay is normally closed

Because of protection circuit it is shorted then if your RC constant it is high, then your RL output shorted before completing RC constant reach max
It is ocuurring your RC canstant resetting becuase of output short condition(no current flow to protection circuit base) so 1ohm->RL current flow in state protection circuit Zero volts so your C value it is needed more less than 1uF
Also Before problem it is not completed state it is still adaptable becuase of your output short and then open output and after your RC constant time over and then RL continue connection it is to able to output Voltage and cuurrent well.

Im at 3:17:09 and im going to make the guess that the first transistor is effectively sinking all the current for the zener. I think you need a npn pnp combo rather than npn and npn. Thats my guess. That circuit brings up allot of questions for me. I don’t understand how the zener could regulate unless it’s supposed to regulate the base. I figured it would be in series idk, zeners are a bit of a mystery atm

Sorin: It would be just as easy for you to look up the simpe formulae and the strength of your solution and calculate exactly howmuch solution you need, just like balancing your voltages. In fact you could probably measure the voltge that is causing the copper to dissolve as in a battery.

Is BD237 powerful enough? In the specs it only stands 35 whatts, but if it must transfer the shorted current that pass through the relay, there is more like 80 to 120 whatts no?
I'm only at 3:09:00 but I am ask myself, you buy a power supply to rip out the shortcircuit protection. So 'we' can use the current limiting to find a shorted component.
Why add a shotcircuit protection if you have current limiting in this ps?

Hi, I would like to ask you if you can give me some advice on the repair of the SR Tecnolgy Live 220 speaker amplifier board. The customer brought me the speaker with 2 woofer speakers which they mounted with the coil excursion nailed. There was the low frequency fuse that had been bypassed by bridging a wire, I don't know what damage it could have caused to the circuit...... I reset the fuse, the audio signal comes out of the speaker, good on the late frequency dirty and vibrant on the lows; I changed the control and amplification IC but nothing changed; what could it depend on? Thank you

I tried building like this..but I used lm317 and 3 tip3055 transistor...the problem is i cant control the current..instead i add a fix current control resistor..but I like yours more...
