  • In August 2015, Indigenous Hip Hop Projects (‘IHHP’) teamed up with the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency’s (‘NAAJA’) legal education team to visit Maningrida for a week-long intensive workshop to create a legal education music video.
IHHP and NAAJA worked with both old and young people to explore legal themes such as respectful relationships and the ripple effect of domestic violence on the community, including people going to jail. Keeping families strong and safe is also explored, to support families to make right decisions in accordance with child protection laws. The concept of consent is also touched on briefly.
Through the chorus, "Gurrutu Raypirri", the community is encouraged to embrace Law and Respect as the foundations on which to build a strong community.
This project would not have been possible but for the generous support of Djolpa and Noeletta McKenzie and the youth crew from Greats Youth Service, Malabam Health Board, who gave their time, expertise, troopies, venue and Djolpa's amazing voice.
NAAJA provides legal assistance to Aboriginal people in the Top End.
