      Interesting.
      I hear what you're saying, and believe me, you're not gonna find any cracks in Bonham appreciation, but I was actually thinking you were gonna say the opposite, that hearing those riffs without Bonham's drums made you appreciate just how great Page was. Because some of the lilt to what Page was actually playing gets a bit lost in Bonham's beats - which, to be clear, is not necessarily a bad thing - and you miss what Page was really doing. Until you hear it without and then you're like, "Oh right, that's why this shit was all so tight, because EVERYBODY was slaying all the time in their own way."

    I think one thing to keep in mind in Rick’s top 10 list order is having heard the songs when they came out. So often when you listen to a song it takes you back to the first time you heard it. Those were exciting days and an exciting time in his life so some riffs may mean more to him than they would to a mature first time listener. I am about his age and I pretty much agree with his order. Incredible to hear those for the first time as a young kid!

Rick does have a Zep acoustic opening video, so I'm only hitting the rockers.

    • @SPAMDAGGER22
      @SPAMDAGGER22 2 года назад +1

      The only thing I disagree with is them inventing punk rock. Punk rock shattered the rules of rock and or roll. It's hazy as to whom the actual "inventor" of punk rock is, but I give it to The Legendary Stardust Cowboy who kicked the shit out of conventional 1,2,3,4, music and created the chaotic non traditional playing of what became the punk rock chassis that birthed a thousand sub genres. Led Zeppelin's chops were far too advanced to be considered anything resembling punk. I present to you Paralyzed...ruclips.net/video/9EEZAivzl1Q/видео.html

    • @alan73795
      @alan73795 2 года назад +4

      @@SPAMDAGGER22 I really just meant that as a joke because of the rawness and simplicity of the opening riff, which initially sounds like something that could've been played by Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys) or Steve Jones (Sex Pistols). I'm not sure that I would classify TLSC as punk; he was weirder and from a much earlier generation. An essential ingredient of punk is anger, and that wasn't really part of the TLSC sound (but cool that you added him to the conversation). But mid-70's punk definitely saved rock from the bland landscape of disco, candy pop and soft rock that was strangling the era. And the Pistols blazed the way, although Steve Jones was actually a really good guitarist and for that matter, the Pistols were really more sophisticated musically and lyrically than given credit for. They dressed like punks, behaved like punks, but wrote and played great, acerbic rock songs. For them, "punk" was a brand, but not their product, which made them all the more brilliant.

He might be using the middle position, using both the neck and bridge pickups at the same time, but whatever's going on there, I'm really not a fan of it. A few years ago, I was lying in bed in the middle night when a riff came into my head. It was something old, something from my youth, something that wouldn't let go. I tried to remember what it was, but I couldn't. It kept playing, a sad, melancholy little riff that was so familiar. As it played over and over in my head, it struck me that it was one of the most meaningful riffs I had ever heard. I had to figure it out. It had such a strange mood to it, bittersweet, a longing for something gone.
    I eventually figured out it was Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin. I've known this song for almost 47 years. I was touched by it when it was new, but all these years later, it seems even deeper.

    Guys can I just say growing up in the 70s the first group I ever saw live was led zep they blew my mind away and introduced me to blues music ( on steroids ) your reaction to my fav band of all time both delights me and takes me back in time to when I first discovered them the phrase shock and awe comes to mind so thank you both for making me realise how lucky I was to see them live . Like queen they will never be equalled or forgotten .... ps keep up the good work

    #6, yes it should be on the list. It's all in the mood of it, 10 years gone is a fantastic song! It's so melancholy! It's About looking back and realizing 10 years of your life have gone by so quickly! It has a huge influence on me. But this video by Rick really should be a top 50. There are no bad Zepplin riff's!

    Rick comes from a Jazz perspective and appreciates complexities and nuances in music that perhaps the modern musician may not get, that being said, Rick always maintains that it is his top ten and that it is his opinion and viewers are welcome to pick their own top tens. So yeah, I think you ought to make your own list. Personally I liked Rick's picks.

    Rick Beato used to be a record producer with his own studio in Atlanta. He mostly produced metal and nu-metal bands (even though he was previously a college professor of jazz theory), notably Shinedown.
    By the way, if you don't know Shinedown, listen to their song "Second Chance."

    July 1983 Wembley Arena in London at a CS& N concert had an encounter backstage with the man behind these riffs- Jimmy Page. Backstage room couple dozen people having party- nothing wild. Exchanged greetings as Jimmy passed by and took a second to recognize him. Seemed very quiet and unassuming almost hanging back from others there. Also his wrist or arm was in a cast. I was there by way of an Atlantic Records promotion/contest and had a classic Bentley limo to and back from hotel to concert. A guy with Atlantic Records was our driver and escort. Later in evening the record guy is talking to Jimmy and then approaches us relating that Jimmy's driver/car are missing. I should mention Jimmy was also with Atlantic Records. The driver then ask if we would let Jimmy have our limo to get home. We said sure... the story we would have alone made the decision easy. Leaving the arena through the back area outside noticed a slightly hunched over figure sitting alone on the curb. It was Jimmy all alone waiting for his ride, arm in cast and drinking what appeared to be chocolate milk from a carton. He sees us and gave sort of a nod and wave type acknowledgement thanks for the limo. I will never forget that image of this rock guitar icon looking so forlorn.
