I was so fortunate to grab tix for all three sold out shows. From looking at his official website at the time I could discern these were the only shows in the USA featuring a different album on each night. I knew it would be quite special. The Teragram Ballroom (approximately 1600 capacity) had recently been used as a printing shop facility (once inside it was really hard to wrap my brain around that!) and were looking to make a name for itself in L. A. with the signing of several name acts (and they had quite a few.) The facility is located a wee bit outside of downtown proper but I walked from work nonetheless. Needless to say Gary did not disappoint. Difficult for an old working man to make three shows in a row during the week but it was worth it. To this day, Gary gives it his all every show. Hard to believe it has been more than five (5) years since; these days the Ballroom sits empty due to the Coronavirus (as many theatres throughout America.) Beginning yesterday, we have a new administration; I hope vaccinations is its top priority for 2021. Peace everyone, if Numan can later tour, don't miss him.
@@paidrussiantroll1305 absolutely on both fronts. catching up on him now. briefly, when i was 14 in newport, RI i got my first job at a restaurant washing dishes. it was wild. the house nextdoor was an after hours freeforall. the oweners kids had punk bands playing till all hours, it was 1981. one night everyone was raging and the pleasure principle album appeared. one of the major players said 'hey, you look just like him. neuman! gary numan!'. that began my nickname (nicknames were popular at the time). so it stuck. parents hated it, thought it was a code for drug dealing- it kind of was lmao. anyway, going back to newport years after HS i came to find a lot of very well known aquaintances never knew my real name greg. i just became 'numan', literally almost everyone referred to me as that from 14 to this day back up there. i might possibly be one of a handful at most that can own that. thanks for listening.
@@charliechan578 This is difficult to recommend: why? Please read on. Gary was somewhat pure electronica when he hit it big in the late '70s. For me, his music was mesmerizing. Back then bands toured to support record sales, tours were not the money makers they are today. Gary poured all of his tour profits into his stage production, so much so that he essentially was bankrupt at the end of each tour. Ah, but those shows! I never saw a one; only late night obscure television shows that would invite the band on for a song or two (and of course today RUclips on my 90 inch screen, not bragging, simply expressing how it is that I am so jealous of those who saw the real show.) But back then even on a tiny 13' television screen using rabbit ears I could see Gary put everything into his shows. There is even a rare video on RUclips from an old show where Gary is driving something equivalent to a bumper car ON STAGE during "Me!" I flipped when I first saw that. Imagine the cost of lugging that around on tour? Then after a few albums where sales were a bit disappointing (wherein Gary changed musical direction) he pretty much disappeared. I assumed he left the business to become a pilot as years earlier he said in interviews that is his plan. Somewhere around the late '90s (or early 2000s?) suddenly Gary was back with his old songs updated with a much "harder" sound. As well, the stage extravagance was gone - now it was pure music at his shows. Some new bands began to cover his songs and invited him as a special guest to play on stage, as a benefit he was introduced to a younger audience. Then he began writing and recording NEW music, a whole new style. Very hard! At first I didn't know what to think of it. As I listened to the new stuff I realized that some of these new songs were masterpieces, just as he had done 30 years earlier with a different genre. He is still doing it. Gary is approaching nearly 50 years in the business; remind yourself of this when you watch him at the show. I am his same age, I don't know how he does it. So ..... back to your question: which album(s) to buy? It really depends on where you want to begin. The early stuff, the middle stuff (commercially a miss but still some good songs in there) or the more recent stuff? If it was me I would begin with the recent work, buy one, then jump to one early one (any one of the three listed at the top are good, and don't forget about Berserka) then back to the recent, then throw in a middle one. Mix it up. You never know with the older fellas if there will ever be another tour as life is short. So if you are going, learn a few (if not all) of the songs. It really makes for a better concert experience. Enjoy! BTW, I did grab tix for September at the Fonda Theatre here in L.A. so we will be seeing the show from the same tour. Have a blast, and mask.
Gary has an amazing way of re-inventing himself. very happy to see you in L.A. and now made it your home. Welcome!. A trailblazer in the genre for bands like Nine Inch Nails.
