Riding the Highest Road in the Americas! (S3:E54)

- Having departed the Andes, Chad and Rose embark on a journey through the famous "Quebrada de las Conchas" (Shells' Ravine) before riding to Northern Argentina's most beautiful city, Salta.
Multiple road closures force them to detour up the remote Lerma Valley, back to Ruta-40. From there, a quick detour south takes them back above 4.500 meters / 16,000 ft along the highest-altitude road in the Americas, and the highest pass, outside of the Himalaya: Abra del Acay.

Freaking awesome video! Again!
I promised myself not to go all fanboy over this video, but Iike my New Year's resolutions for healthy eating and exercise I am breaking that promise.
Brilliant scenery, great editing, and terrific commentary.
I loved everything in this video, even your fascination with grave sites!
Thanks for another amazing vid.
Ps. As you know from my Facebook page, I love reading and reviewing Moto Travel books. I am looking forward to reading your book when you write it!
Ha ha - go "fanboy" all you like - we love it!! As you know, we're not doing this for $$. We do it because we love it and we love the feedback from people like you who enjoy our videos.
It really is our living photo album and creative outlet, so thank you for your support and kind words!!
As for the book, I (Chad) have mulled it over, but does the world really need another moto-travel book (or RUclips channel for that matter)??
It just seems a bit cliche at this point. 🤔
@TwoWheelsThreeSheets OK, I will continue all Fanboy then! Lol.
You are correct that the world doesn't need another travel book. What the world needs, at least the World According to Coward, is travel books with unique insights and perspectives.
You two go to places where others do not, and you have a compelling perspective that others do not. Additionally, you guys are really funny, and that works well in books.
Of course, writing a book is very hard work and has little prospects of making huge $ but it if you did, it would make me happy. What better incentive is there?
In all seriousness, I do think that your content is significantly different and, in my opinion, superior to most.
That is the last thing that I will say about it because I probably don't know what I am talking about. Let's leave it at the Tiger Coward Adventure Motorcycle Library would welcome a 2Wheels 3Sheets book if and when it is written.
Go forth with an open mind and, most importantly, an open heart and remember that self-care is not selfish!
Man, I'm getting all embarrassed over here... ☺️
Jeez... well, thank you as always for the kind words. If I ever do write a book, it'll only be because people like you want to read it.
I've tried vanity projects before, but at the end of the day, they're very unfulfilling... 😐
Thanks again for the kind words, but you better turn it down before it goes to my head!! 😅
Yes, you made it to the top. I tried on December 31 to make it fom Cachi after a night of thunderstorms.
I got stuck at one of the washed out river crossings.
Getting the bike and baggage back up solo was quite an effort, effectively I met my physical limits.
I returned to Cachi but tried again the next day, successfully.
This section of Rita 40 can be easy in good conditions and just impossible after heavy rainfall.
And this is a national highway!
What an experience.
I look forward to your video on the next more northern sections of Rita 40 passing the canyon in the riverbed.
I have to repeat myself, where you ride two-up on a heavily loaded AT is just impressive.
Plus the video editing and commentary is just outstanding!
Thank you so much!! Yes, apparently the road in that section is closed about as often as it's open...
The only real traffic it gets any more is it from locals or overlanders. Everyone else uses Highway 9 to the east...
A man on his bike, his lovely lady behind..and blue skies and some fantastic scenery..
Life is good 👍
Thanks for sharing..
Stay safe!!
Thanks for coming along for the ride! 🍻
Your video resolution is outstanding-and Rose's narration is easy to listen to and commands my attention! What a trip!
Thank you for the kind words and for supporting the channel! We live to ride another day!! 😁🍻
easy to understand English
Beautiful people discovering beautiful places. Thank you for inspiration!)
Thank you for coming along for the ride! 🍻
❤😂just thank you so much...We are in Buenos Aires...1.600 km ..but close to you, both... with the Hope of seeing you enjoy any places in the world. 😊😊😊.
We loved Buenos Aires- it is a beautiful city!! Have you had a chance to ride Ruta-40 Norte???
Hats off to you both!!!what an amazing life💛
Thank you!! Yes, an amazing life indeed!! 💛💛💛
Awesome video! You 2 are on top of the world, impressive height. And more beautiful scenery. Wish I was there with you. Keep it up. Que le vaya bien.
Thank you sir!! An impressive little pit stop indeed. Did I mention how cold it was?? 🤔😅
Interesting geology and fossils in Shell Ravine. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
On the summit, you two do make me laugh
Another great episode
Many thanks
Ha ha... Did I mention it was cold??
Hi Chad, Hi Rose! I discovered your channel a week ago. What a treasure! Subscribed after the first video and right away I started to watch all the videos from the beginning. You have 92 videos so far, therefore you got 92 likes from me. Pure happiness! I'm trying to promote your channel around here, in Canada. You deserve more subscribers and lot more likes! Great job! Thank you!
Wow, I applaud your intestinal fortitude and wholeheartedly apologize for season #1... 😅
Thank you so much for supporting the channel and spreading the word. Not to mention the 92 likes!!!
Cheers from Guyana 🇬🇾 🍻
Wow and I thought it looked hot up there. Incredibly high and a road too, amazing. Thanks guys another great video. Wild adventures....love it!!
Thank you!! Yeah, it actually does look like it would be hot!! 🥵
Not so much!! 🥶
The scenery is top notch
Loving the drone
Mucho thank yous! That drone doesn't live much longer... 😬
I just fall in love how you narrate and edit videos ❤ it's Just awesome.
Love from 🇮🇳❤
I've seen Asia, Africa, pretty much of Europe, but It's time I'm watching South American through your video ❤ Just love the continent.
Thank you so much! We're putting the finishing touches on our next video, which drops tomorrow morning! Be sure to tune in!!
Cheers from Panama! 🍻
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets Sure ❤️
I absolutely LOVE this video series! I’ve always wanted to do a bike trip to these areas but I don’t speak Spanish. Thank you so much for taking me with you!
Thanks for joining us! Don't let a language barrier stop you. If you can manage a few basoc words, you'll be fine!! 💪
Very, very cool, your trip
It certainly has been!! 🍻
These areas really feel like the Wild West as depicted in movies, jut more mountainous. More excellent editing and musical accompaniment.
It certainly feels like you're taking a step back in time... particularly the more remote villages, which seem virtually untouched for the last 100 years.
Abracadabra…another magical route and video ! Saludos
Thanks for riding it with us!! 💪
Excellent video. Been over the Abra del Acay in 2018 on the previous Africa Twin (RD 07A) with wife on the back. Came from the south and the road was "officially" closed. Not easy but we had good weather. We did the full length of the Ruta 40 on that trip. Love Argentina. Thank you for the memories. 💗 Rose is a stunner btw 😂😂
Argentina is an ADV paradise, and the Africa Twin eats it up (no matter which generation)! Cracks me up to read that the southern section of Ruta-40 was "officially" closed even then. 😅
And yes, Rose is indeed a stunner. Turns out she loves to travel, and is also willing to put up with me! 10/10 🖤
Did you treat the Africa Twin to some new brake rotors too? Hey Chad, I was screaming too at 13:10 with that mud on dry road 😮. I must tell you how impressive it is the way you handle that bike loaded like it is, you're lucky you've got such a great passenger.
Ha ha - glad I wasn't the only one screaming!! 😅 Thanks for the kind words! And yeah, Rose is OK, I guess... 😒
😁
Even setting playback speed at 0.75 isn't enough. I kept having to hit pause just to take in the visual feast you gave us this week. Wow.
And of corse, the videos don't do it justice! Such a beautiful part of the world. It's amazing how picturesque some of these obscure backroads are. Roads that would be considered a "motorcycle classic" back in the US, fly almost completely under the radar down here.
Very good, congratulations....thanks
Thank you! 🍻
Hace poco que los estoy siguiendo. Yo tambien soy moto viajero.
Me divierten mucho sus videos!. Gracias por los subtitulos en español y que disfruten de Argentina, mi pais 😍.
Mi admiración para tu compañera de viaje que siempre se la ve feliz en todas las situaciones. Saludos y buenas rutas!.
Awesome - thank you so much for coming along for the ride! We absolutely loved our time in Argentina!! 🍻
No sabía lo de los subtítulos en español. ¡Muchas gracias! Estoy aprendiendo español.
Por nada!! 🍻
Hello there, you are riding in the legendary Honda Africa Twin ❤❤❤ that's one of my all time favorite bikes ❤❤❤❤❤
Mine too! It is an incredible machine!! 💪
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The sandstones remind me of Vasquez rocks in SoCal
No doubt!
Steak and ice cream
Thats a dinner!!!!
Not bad, eh??? 🤤
Here for the tortilla's!
Me too!! 😁
Wow, your own personal chef, in the middle of nowhere!
Tell me now, where can I find one of these? 🤔🤣
Another great episode.
Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Thanks mate!! She cooks, but she don't clean.
OK, that's a lie. She does both. 😁
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets 😂😂 sshhh lol.
What a great episode this was. I’m going to watch it again.
The best cinematic motorcycle adventure on RUclips.
Congratulations to both of you 👍
Thank you!! 🍻
In the opening, I thought that drone shot of the ruins was just drying cracked mud.
The bird's eye view is pretty wild!
The theory for only natural sound advocates a purist realism, whilst on the other hand the theory for introduced sound scapes claims it detracts from boring sounds and disjointed sonic shifts, but also arguably gives the viewer a riders zeitgeist, (phenomenology of travel). This is where a VoiceOver narrations with a hard to pin corresponding style of music can work really well- and does here- because it captures motorcycle travel as transcending the platitudes - combustion engine sound- and where the psycho somatic flow of travel through the continent is a kind of ode to life on the road which has its classics in cinema genera too.
😳 Wow, that was a full-blown dissertation that I'm not qualified to deliver! Thank you for that!! 🍻
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets Right, it seems like thesis statement, because it is!
Amazing video, the only problem is the the title is misleading. This is far from be "The Highest Road in the Americas." that would be Los Seismiles from Fiambalá to the crossing with San Andrés. All above 6.000 meters of altitude.
9R4P+5C Cortaderas, Catamarca Province, Argentina
You are correct... perhaps we should change the thumbnail. It is apparently the highest "National Road" in the Americas, which is a bit of an odd distinction. 🤔
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets the other are national also, ruta 60. just go there and ride. bring some jerrycan, 500km with no gas stations! =D
I believe we did a section of Ruta 60, as well as 76 on the other side of the mountains. Brilliant riding - some of our all-time favorite!
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets I went there in April. It was a nice ride, but the weather was a little bit weird. There were sandstorms on the Chilean side and a lot of rain everywhere. It's supposed to be a 'stable' month to travel, but...
That’s one Africa Twin living its best life
Some would say... Others would argue it's being tortured! 😅
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets nah, parked garage queens are the tortured
@lessmore444 agreed!!! 🍻
Great clip, so do you guys have just one Motor cycle . I was thinking you had one each, but in this clip just one .
Thank you! We're 2-up of the Africa Twin. That might change in the next year or so... 😁
beautiful scenery.......chad how big is ur gas tank ,whats the milage per gallon.
It's a 5 gallon (18.8 liters) tank. Depending on conditions, we average about 40 miles per gallon.
❤
🍻
😊👍🙏
🍻
Rose is hiking?!!!!!!
No one was more surprised than I was!! 😃
Surpised you guys don't use a dedicated GPS, cool video!
Thank you! Naw... had a GPS, didn't like it much...
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets I have an XT2 from Garmin and don't love it, but I don't like leaving my expensive phone of the handlebars
Which is exactly why I use a dedicated (cheap) phone for navigation. Generally, I try not to buy expensive electronics.
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets Ah! Smart! thnx ;-)
Best time of the year to do this part of ruta 40 is october/november
Yeah, we were running a bit late... 🥶
How do you prepare against wildlife bothering you in the evening/night whilst you camp outdoors away from civilization??
Animals typically avoid human contact. Rodents sometimes come around looking for food, but you just have to be sure to clean up / pack up / secure anything that may attract them.
In desert environments you sometimes have to keep a watchful eye out for snakes and scorpions. They sometimes like to take shelter in the nooks and crannies.
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets Wow.....Appreciate a prompt reply!! Thank you.....Godspeed!
Awesome video and commentary, mind blowing scenery you two are fantastic, be safe, careful 'Tally Hoe' on your travels 🙂NZ
Tally ho indeed!! 🤠 Thank you, cowboy!! 🍻
You pack 10 times more amazing scenery in a 15-minute video than most motovlogs do in 30 minutes. I don't understand how some of these channels have so many views with the garbage they produce.
Your channel should have a million subscribers, at least!
Ha ha - well in that case, be sure to tell your friends!!! 😁
Thank you for supporting the channel. We actually enjoy the process of producing the content. Otherwise, it'd be too much damn work. I think a lot of content creators do it more to funnel viewers to their affiliate links or patreon account, and it shows in the content they produce.
Do it for the love of it, or don't do it at all!! 🍻💪
@TwoWheelsThreeSheets I am so tired of being beat over the head by the same handful of motovloggers spamming every Facebook group and shoving their patreon link down my throat. Their videos are 75% blabbing in the camera and 25% riding at best.
I don't understand why those accounts do so much better than yours. It's just crazy.
Well, between you, me, and the fence post....I (Chad) don't actually watch a lot of RUclips myself. BUT - I can tell you that a lot of the channels who are constantly blasting social media aren't actually doing it themselves.
They have social media managers who do it on their behalf. And those same managers typically buy subscribers and views in order to justify their employment. It's a lot of smoke and mirrors.
But... you didn't hear that from me! 😁
Come into pakistan
We plan to! 👍
@@TwoWheelsThreeSheets OK I'll wait ...
Very nice. Would be even nicer to remove the music and hear original sounds instead.
Thank you!! The problem with native audio is that with as many cuts as we have in the video, the sound constantly changes, which can be quite distracting.
Not to mention wind noise at highway speeds...
We've tried using native sound in the past, but the music seems to be preferred by most viewers.
Thanks for watching!! 🍻
