  • I’ve always liked the idea of a bolt action rifle with a 16” barrel & folding stock. I featured one years ago but it was something I put together. This time I wanted to show a factory option, the Sig Cross in .308. I topped it with a Vortex Razor LHT 4.5-22X50, Nightforce Ultralite rings, and Huxwrx suppressor. A big thanks to Brownells & Silencer Shop for making this video happen! Check ‘em out!

For the East Coast, 16" velocities get you 90% of what you'll run in to for hunting or most ranges. One of my toys years ago was a H&R HandiRifle .308 cut down to 16.5" threaded as an exercise. It was easily MOA and truly handy! With no action to cycle, it is much shorter overall than any other action. Proved the concept for me anyways. Great vid!

I mean… Christiansen Arms has a lightweight rifle in the same configuration but Christiansen Arms is .4lbs heavier, according to the weights they provide. The Fix by Q is also a similar configuration that is .2lbs less than the Sig. Lengths are 25” for the Cross, 28” for the Christensen Arms and 25.9” for The Fix when folded. All three are excellent, lightweight, precision rifle bolt guns that would work for a “bag” precision rifle.

@@ctrip34 You are correct, of the three examples I gave, the Sig Cross is the most budget friendly option, or if you had a $4000 budget, you could certainly get better glass, accessories and ammunition with the extra money you have after the purchase of the gun itself. I was only pointing out that it isn’t a new concept, and I’ve certainly been able to make an even cheaper Precision bag gun myself with a Ruger American, with an MDT chassis, but I can’t speak to its weight in particular. I’m not sure how much difference it makes to most people, a pound or half a pound, when the system is purpose built to be carried in a bag. Overall length in its shortest configuration I would think is the most important part. I don’t mean to diminish The Cross at all. I think it’s excellent. Just that the concept of a precision bag gun has been possible since before the Cross existed.

My amended statement: I highly doubted that this rifle would be consistent at that range. Sig makes great machine gun barrels, but they are relatively new to the precision game. Additionally. I wasn't sure if the the shorter barrel would sufficiently stabilize the round. However, after watching this video, and a few others, it's clear that this rifle certainly has the capacity to perform well; with proper natural alignment, trigger discipline, and dope.
It's unlikely that I'll have the opportunity for 1K yard shots, as the southern Indiana terrain dictates otherwise, but there are plenty of 600 yard shots along powerline pathways and our ever-diminishing array of cornfields (perhaps a tad more range in the larger fields). I'm mostly looking at getting longer shots on coyotes, and an occasional deer (only on private property in the Hoosier).
I kind of consider this the perfect scout rifle, with better long range performance than you'll find on most scout rifles. Ostensibly, I could mount a holographic sight on it, iron sights, or just go with a traditional scope set-up; if so desired. I believe old Col Cooper would approve.
I am placing my order today for a 308 model. Also notable, Straight Jacket Armory carries prefit barrels for this rifle, if one feels the need to improve the performance even more, or change the chambering.

My 308 Cross loves Federal Prem 175gr Terminal Ascents. They aren't cheap but they have always been a phenomenal hunting round. Though, Barnes makes a 175gr target/match shank/bullet that has the same BC which is a great option to use in conjunction with the term ascent. If you reload, of course, you can use the Barnes for practice and then the Term Ascent for hunting and they shoot very very similar and have identical real world drop. At least this is what I discovered after 440 rounds through my 308 Cross. Hopefully, my babbling helps someone!

One of the best out of the box factory rifle is AI AX. Yeah it cost an arm,but not only does it have one solid action, bonded to the chassis, it also has a folding stock over the bolt, and the quick barrel change. That last feature just smoked every other "covert" sniper on market. When the AI AX is folded and barrel removed its only 45cm / 17inch in total size. Verty few bolt actions can come close to this concealability. Even teh Remingston MSR can't do it because of non-quick barrel change. Best of all its like practically holding zero even after barrel install/uninstall.

Outside of 168gr noslers…it was iffy for dome shots out at 300+. 168s of local loaded 168 ballistic tips, Hormady BTHP, and Winchester silver tips….all performed very well from that pre accutrigger bull barrel rifle. They shoot well but I don’t like the idea of supporting a company that beta tests on its consumers. The many massive safety recalls sig issues is a problem for me. The first run of these things would go off if you shook them too hard.

SO i am here to request that you shoot air guns also. my AEA CHALLENGER PRO.30CAL is about the same weight and folds up and you can stick it in a backpack. and has accuratly been shot at over 400 yards. my element max 51cal only weighs 5.2 lb without scope and bi-pod and is shorter and well the roundball is 182grain and that is its lightest projectile. but say on projectiles i use a .284dia hornedy super shock 162grain that wont expand at under 1300fps and a .30cal air gun wont shoot faster than that anyway so basically the projectile wont expand and becomes basically slow armor peircing . i have shot through a couple steel house doors and the round came out pretty enough to put right back into the air rifle and shoot again...
advantages with air guns , less recoil, no muzzle flash ever, and you can take more rounds with you cause no brass or powder needed...
my challenger pro folds down into a 26inch length and the element max about the same (course the hp ss max folds down to 20 inches. and weighs 4.8lb without accessories and comes in calibers from .30 upto .495(.50cal)
and if you fold it to 20 inches you can stuff it just about anywhere. and it has a couple mags with any caliber.
just trying to open your mind to different possibilities.

Spear vs cross .308 suggests on purchase?

  • @btstrohfus

I recently purchased this exact firearm for our deer/predator rifle. My plans are to swap out the 6.5cm barrel and replace it with a 18" 22cm. Here in SD we are limited to a .22 caliber projectile when using thermals, but its also a legal round for deer and antelope. It could be the perfect lightweight laser beam to cover all my deer sized game on down.

It may be because it is intended as a hunting rifle? I know my fathers dirt cheap Remington 783 would shoot just sub moa with 168gr....maybe the rifling doesn't prefer the heavy 175gr?

    • @paulbouchard1003

Me too, but with the old 788 in .243.

    • @randomidiot8142
      @randomidiot8142 Год назад

It's a 1:10 barrel that's been the standard for decades, predating the 783. The 175 is a whole 7 grains heavier and a few thousandths longer than a 168. Guns are picky about what they like. The 175 load could have had less consistent velocity affecting the groups for all we know. Too many factors at play to make a generalization with limited information.

The sig website says 1:10. It should handle 200+ gr bullets just fine, because 1:10 .308's have been handling 200+ gr bullets for decades.

Compact rifle with accuracy and range is what's coming. Trick is low recoil , projectile and the 11pound weight Max.
I'm with you but would like to see a falcon strike recoil pad, monolithic copper low powder super long hybrid flat flight projectile, accuracy international mag and star ball HD added to a compact system.
Effective compact system for dense bush and urban inviroment with a long reach if required when autos are taken ,is the future.
    Thank mate.
