If the airline needs planes quickly, then a deal within the OneWorld alliance makes sense. Qatar helped out BA the other year when there was a fuselage shortage (Dreamliner engine woes, or something?). It's the real world, guys and gals!
@@craigbeatty8565 This is where an airline with too much capacity/crews that need lease it out to another carrier that actually need the capacity on short notice. Not surprising in this case since Fin Air is has issues overflying Russia these days going to Asia which was most of their long haul network.
Then why does Air New Zealand have leased 2 A330s from WAMOS used for services from Auckland to Perth. Qatar leases Cathay Pacific 777-300ERs for its operations, for the same reason as Qantas - huge growth within all branches of the Qantas Group. Why does all of a sudden that when Qantas needs to expand its operations to lower air fares that instead of a positive attitude, people are angry, because it seems they are always angry about something, at this point you can have airfares low or keep them high and you would still complain. Qantas A330 pilots are not fitted for the use case of Finnair A330s because Finnair have crewing schedules from Helsinki to Australia, its better for them to have them crewed for the way down instead of a handover of AUS -> FIN crew at an Asian port - this is especially the case when looking at the aircraft's rotation. For this to happen, it would be a dry lease off to Qantas and Finnair would lose the aircraft and can't have a rotating schedule that meets their demands. Qantas' A330-300s that were chopped into freighters were due to the fact that Qantas Fleet Management signaled them to go due to them being too old for Qantas Mainline. Fleet management and expansion are 2 separate groups within the QF group - Qantas is replacing its 737s with A321neos and 717s with A220s, with the A330 replacement order expected in August. I flew on Finnair A330 a few years ago. As I boarded I was shocked at how tightly packed the seating was configured, and immediately dreaded the pending long haul flight. It turned out to be amazingly comfortable. The seat was the best economy class I can remember, the entertainment system proved very adequate. I was so comfortable I slept most of the flight without any difficulty. It was the easiest long haul flight I’ve ever done!
Their recent economy menu is nothing to talk about. You only get ONE hot meal on long-haul economy, and also ONE complimentary alcoholic drink served with your main meal. Any extra Alcoholic drinks throughout the flight must be paid for!
I recently flew from Stockholm nonstop to London Heathrow on a British Airways flight complete with a British Airways menu in the seat pocket that was a Finnair branded A320ceo and Finnair flight crew. It appears Qantas is not alone in this practice.
Yeah Finnair currently operate flights for BA and Qatar Airways, last summer they even flew to N-America for the Lufthansa Group. Finnair have excess capacity due to Russia's closed airspace.
I feel like Wet Leasing is a lot more common in other places and Australians don't have a lot of experience with seeing their major airline engaging in a wet lease agreement (even though QantasLink literally does this on a large scale with Alliance Airlines). I think it's just a little different for Aussies when it comes to our national airline wet leasing a widebody to operate international routes, but I believe that is just due to a lack of exposure to this type of operation As you said, I reckon it could be exciting for some Australians who get to try out the Finnair product which we usually don't see in Australia
Having done three Finnair Business Class flights in the last 3 months I would not think you should be highlighting finnair service. On one leg I was given the entire business class meal including hot cup of tea on one tray at the same time and then the cabin crew disappeared for the remainder of the flight.

She also had her luggage case damaged last year and is still waiting for the compensation they approved for the damage 10 months ago!
Every airline is struggling with something. I think Qantas has made some smart decisions with the new fleet coming - their pricing deal for A220, A321 & A350 would have been exceptional emerging from the pandemic. I do think the A330neo fits in well with the QF strategy - lets see what happens at Paris air show! And capacity issues - welcome to every airline in the🎉 world. For Finnair this is a win for their Winter aircraft usage and for Qantas a win for increased capacity during Summer.
Qantas wet-leased seven Air Canada 767-300s after Ansett collapsed in 2001. In 1988-89 Qantas leased a 747 from Martinair - QF cabin crew, Dutch pilots. What is old is new again.
They shrunk it because it was losing tons of money. They make the money off the domestic not international. Australia is not well positioned for a lot of traffic and the country is actually small in terms of population.
Joyce was lauded as a very competent CEO during the time that blind Freddy could have run an international airline. Joyce came from a small airline and turned Qantas into one as well, no vision, poor planning, but will still walk away with a huge golden handshake for a job very badly done.
