I sort of understand that it is instinct, but I taught myself (and my kids) to always look for the best escape route and if nothing is better, to accept the inevitable. I just wish more people drove defensively, because there are far more idiots on the road now.

Just drive further back and brake early and smoothly... most people run up someones clacker because they are "surprised" and weren't expecting to brake. The sit back further, brake early and smoothly method is a winner. Not only will it protect you from running up someones rear... the person behind you (even tailgating DH's) will have time to brake as you are forcing them to.

None of these surprise me. In 25 years as a paramedic, I've attended about 5,000 traffic crashes. The percentage of those that were true accidents or due to acute medical episodes would be about 0.5% or less. The rest were avoidable, and that's represented in these videos. The DC at 10:45 made a stupid move by driving right in front of the Ranger. We have a saying; "Their stupidity is our job security". Please learn from these videos and consider doing a defensive driving course. Driver training in Australia is pretty inadequate, imho. I've seen people in their 30s who on day 1 of our advanced driver training courses think they were good drivers, only to find after the two-week course just how much more there was to learn about driving. Drive safely folks.

@@jillspence7227 _"so many truck drivers just don't care."_
You can't really throw every driver in the same bucket. I've been driving for 34 years, never lost a point, never copped a fine, and only been involved in one accident, that was when a car tried to overtake me on the inside when I was turning. _(do not overtake turning vehicle)_ The car lost, I buffed out the scratch.
I think if you really looked into it, you'll find that out of all fatalities involving heavy vehicles, the heavy vehicle was *NOT* at fault for 80% of them. So 8 out of 10 fatalities involving a heavy vehicle were caused by the car driver. That's not my opinion, the statistics back that up.
The real problem is the mentality of not wanting to drive behind a truck. For some reason, there seems to be an unwritten rule somewhere that says you can't drive behind a truck no matter what, and I've seen some people do some real stupid shit in order to get in front of me. Even if I'm doing 80 in an 80 zone, that _"must not be behind this truck"_ mentality still occurs, and that desire to shave 2 minutes off your trip seems to take precedence over how much you value your life, and the life of everybody else.
With the more modern European trucks becoming increasingly popular, things are improving. We've got lane change assist, lane drift warnings, driver alert systems, fatigue sensors, better visibility, automatic braking etc etc. So all of that helps us be a lot more aware of what's going on around us, and the number of fatalities have been decreasing by about 5% each year.
Do I think there are dickhead truck drivers out there? Absolutely there is, and fortunately, they are a dying breed. And while everybody seems to be bashing them on a daily basis, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty, the people who are the most critical of dickhead truck drivers, are other truck drivers.
