My dad played basketball on a dirt court he would talk about the frozen ground with rocks froze in it no telling witch way the ball was going to go when dribbling that story it made me laugh thanks
😊
As a slightly disabled retiree living alone, I'm online maybe more than I should be. Especially in the hard winter months. But that's one of the best stories I ever encountered anywhere. Our moms and grannies sure had to overcome a lot to improve our own lives.
It’s a powerful statement for the strength of Appalachian women
Enjoyed again, JD
Maybe we made it too easy for them
@@janblackman6204 - What do you mean?
I remember fighting for title 9, demanding we girls have sports teams too. Needless to say we were shunned in school by the boys.
Excellent story of the struggles women had to endure .
I’m seventy years old now ,and I remember my mama telling me that she was playing center for her high school basketball team .
And I could always see the gleam in her eyes when she would talk about her winning the state championship trophy .
That had to be along this era ,I’m sure these girls paved the way for my mom and so many others !
Thank you for a great video
You are amazing
Thank you for your sharing your mama's story Gary, stay warm this weekend
I want this story to be made into a movie! What an entertaining and inspiring story.
Thank you ❤️
JD, you had me on the edge of my bleacher seat, right there cheering for the Boomers. You are a gifted storyteller. 😍
Thank you Jodie!
The way those girls rallied and came from behind was poetic. I’m sure they were shell shocked at everything they had seen including playing in a gymnasium. I’m so happy a few of their families came to watch but didn’t yank them out for dressing indecent! Great story JD. All the new stories this week are wonderful. Thank you!
Thank you so much Karen, I really appreciate all your support and look forward to your comments!
Your ability to tall stories is above & beyond anyone else ‼️ with a smooth steady voice you bring us to the highest of anxiety for what’s next.!
Was raised in the country & still 5’0” at 75, so I can relate. I’m glad she found an avenue to put her height to use 🥰
Waiting for lll 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Thank you Dee, I have finished Molly III, I just haven't released it yet, next week sometime
I'm all for youth athletics. I coached Pop Warner football for 7 years down in Florida. Won 4 Championships . Love to teach them, and watch em flourish into football players.
❤️
Oh JD what a wonderful story. Thank you i rooted all the way thru.
Thank you Melissa, stay warm!

Awww, that makes me really happy, thank you so much !
You are an amazing story teller, keep up your excellent work. 👏💛🇨🇦
Thank you so much!
And never a better game was ever played again! Awesome story!
Thank you 😊
My grandmother, Maude Dannel, was born in Floyd County, Virginia in 1888.
I can only imagine the hard scrabble life she had growing up.
I was born in 1956 and took young to hear any of her stories as she had a massive stroke around 1962. The only early memories i have of her was when my mother would send my older brother and i up the street to have my aunt, who was unable to have children, would pin money to our pocket, to take back to help pay bills in the early 1960s.
My grandmother lived with my aunt as did my older sister.
The pictures of my grandmother in the 1940s show a stout, broad shouldered woman. Probably from the hard work of living without electricity, running water, and no luxuries for the first 20 years of her life.
❤️
I chuckled so hard that it darnt near broke my whole laughing muscle! What an ending! I pert near rolled right off my rockin' chair with this one! Little man with a mean-spirited little megaphone thought he could mess with Dry Cove Flossie, and get right away with doin' it even! Talk about getting your back all scratched up and all, betcha he was shy about showin' his face in school for a whole full month! He learnt a lesson no school tries a'teachin'.
Those mountain girls are fire when you get em riled up!
Good morning, JD! Waking up to a Saturday morning story from you makes my day better, for real, friend and this one is a dandy! Take care and I will see ya on the next one!
Thank you Scott!
I'll have to admit that this is one of the best stories I've heard on this channel inspiring and also comical at the same time thank you for uploading it. This also shows off you're amazing talent as a story teller. I came across your channel by accident but now I am hooked one of my guilty pleasures is being watching or listening I should say to your stories. Thanks again for all of your hard work and research and talent also the respect you have for these people.
Glad to have you here Joseph
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller please continue with your stories I enjoy your hard work
I listen to your stiries all the time. Sometimes I cry but not too often. I don't know why this story got to me but it did. I should've been laighing but instead I was hiding my rears from my 13 yr old grandson I'm raising. Merciful gracious.
I’m so happy you enjoyed it ❤️
Great story. Glad they won. That was awesome
😊
Thank you!
Ok... that LAST line had me rollin!😂😂😂

Thank you Jennifer!
I LOVE a story with a happy ending!
Thank you! ❤
Thank you ❤️
I’ve always rooted for the underdog! Their training and perseverance was why they won. Best part of the story was when Flosie whooped Herbie’s behind and shook him up so his teeth rattled. I was LOL throughout the story .😂. Thank you, I needed that.
Thank you Nancy!
Love this story ❤️ 😊
😊
Good morning JD! Wow! I was so deep in this story, I almost jumped out of bed and started cheering! Lol. I’m so happy that you’ve been giving us more videos to watch! You’re the best storyteller ever!!! Stay safe and warm. Temps here in Missouri are dropping like a rock and we’re all in single digits & hunkered down for the duration. Blessings always! ❤️✝️
Thank you Betty!
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller You are welcome my friend! ✝️
I adore this story, it was sooo cool, thank you so much, made me laugh and want to hug that team ❤️
Thank you!
I absolutely loved this story. Takes me way, way back to when I was a kid and played on the sixth grade basketball team. I was a guard. I loved playing. I was on the main team.❤ Keep your great stories coming JD.
Thank you Judy!
as a country and people today, we are in a sad state! the story of those people showed honor and Godliness. i wonder what those people would have done if a boy/male showed up to play "identifying" as a girl? or what they would have done if the public servants/gov. that work for us! tried to force them to let a boy/male join in and even use the locker room with them? God have mercy on us! and give us repentance! we need to take our country and lives and honor back!
What a great story!
Thank you 😊
Oh, wow! This is a marvelous story - on so many levels. Had me on the edge of my seat for the game but I felt anger, frustration, pride... Women have always had to fight so hard for simple equal opportunities and for recognition for holding our families together in so many ways. We're strong when we have to be. i was also aggravated, of course, at the assumption that mountain people would be ignorant and backward. I live in Northern New York now by way of NE Alabama, NW Georgia and the Smokies. When I first arrived 42 years ago, some ignorant folks thought that because I had a pronounced Southern accent and spoke slowly that I was less intelligent than they. I used their prejudice against them almost daily and they never caught on. Saw a phrase the other day that I intend to make my own: "Underestimate me. It'll be fun!" Thanks for another great and uplifting story.
Thank you Myra, have a blessed day!
I’m so excited to have received your book and can’t wait to sit back and enjoy it! Having this story to relax to after a hard night’s work is just what I need this morning. Thank you!
Thank you Claire ❤️
This store was so cool I had to listen to it twice. Thanks for sharing.❤👍💯
Thank you!
Great great story i enjoyed it very much
Oh Lordy, I still remember playing basketball for our lil independent school. 😅
My poor Mother seen fit to spend enough to buy me a “sports” bra…to wear over my regular one. The regular ones didn’t seem to be able to hold things “in place” as I ran up & down the court.
After I was grown, she insisted it was because she didn’t want me coming from a game with a black eye I hadn’t deserved. HaHa!
RIP Mommy🕊
*She could make the preacher laugh, whether he liked it or not.
😂🤣
My aunt was youngest of 8 and only girl , my grandpa was a firm baptist and I think she went thru the same things growing up in the ozark national forest , just luv your oreintation

Holy smokes JD, that was one the best stories yet. I was rooting for those Boomer gals all the way. I would of love to have seen ol' Flozy swatting that guys back side. I could almost picture her sinking that winning shot too. Well until part III of Molly's story. Take it easy.
Thanks Troy!
Best channel on RUclips, if not in the entirety of those damn interwebs.
Thank you, JD.

Great Story
Great Teller
Great Game.
I would spend a Double Eagle to watch this Game live.
PS: What me real made laughing was: the exposed limb, and the devil work.
😂
If a girl is expected to work like a boy than she definitely has a right to play sports!!!
Wonderful story thank you jd
Thank you ❤️
😂😂that was brilliant ‼️ love Julie south Africa ❤❤
Thank you!
Great story.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It was definitely a different time. I never even thought about basketball uniforms not being enough to "was a shotgun" 😂😂. Or their limbs being exposed. I'm not a sports guy at all,but sure enjoyed hearing about this game.
Sorry, "wad a shotgun"
How many folks you reckon won’t have a clue what that phrase means?
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller well, if they watch this channel, I'd say quite a few. But I may be wrong. If they don't know, it's worth looking up. That's why so many of those folks were such good shots, it took too long to reload.
JD I loved it. I hope someday I can make it to a Storyteller Festival. It would be great to be part of an audience listening to your stories.
Thank you Janet! I appreciate all your kindness!
The legend of Nance Dude is a really good one. I think it is a tale that belongs on the Appalachian Storyteller!
My Grandma played basketball in 1924 at the high school in Branson, MO. There were 6 girls. I couldn't imagine her playing that, but I have a picture with her and her team.
❤️
Thank you! Loved the story. Definitely a keeper!😊
Thank you!
I believe I've found me a favorite story......so far. ❤😂

Thank you Bobby!
Loved it! A great story for sure
Thank you Mark!
Another great story! Love each one of them.
Your a great story teller. That was well done
Thank you!
Hi JD! Such a good story and I can just hear the preacher talking about the attire the girls wore. Girls didn’t dress indecent back then let alone play basketball or a sport they considered for boys only.
Flossy Buckner and the Boomers may not have been trained as well, but the determination those girls had.
Have a blessed evening!
Thank you Willow, I’m happy you enjoyed it
😂😂😂❤ fantastic story tellin!
Thank you!
