Thanks a lot! Indeed, it's amazing how a piece like this that undoubtedly saw plenty of use is still perfectly functional after all these decades. Thanks for watching!
How do you recognize a piece like this one and know that it will end up looking like this. I would be so proud to have this lock just to set on my table. Crazy good.
Thanks a lot, Toni! When I buy a piece like this I know there’s no real guarantee that there isn’t a lot of damage being hidden under the paint, but usually I find that there isn’t. That said, since the paint is so thick on a piece like this it should have protected it from receiving any new scratches or small dings throughout all the years it was painted. Thanks for watching!
GREAT job! That lock looks better than it did when it was brand new. As a locksport enthusiast, I really enjoy your lock restoration videos. Looking forward to seeing what you do next 😁
Thanks a lot! I have a pretty short video coming up next, but after that I’ll be restoring another very cool (broken) 1880s-1890s s lockset, and I’m sure you’re going to enjoy it! Thanks for watching!
your work is absolutely amazing. Thank you for preserving history. Young kids today would have thrown this out. You pay attention to every detail and make it right.
I appreciate it, Doug! Sweet - I have seen a few complete sets of these pop up for sale in the past which include a left and right facing latch with their strikes and hinges, so maybe one day I'll complete the set. Haha nope, no music here! Thanks for watching!
I’m currently working on a jumbo ornate mortise lock set, but that project won’t be done until probably late March - It’s going to be around 250 hours of work to get it done, so it’ll be a while hahaha. I should have a single mortise lock restoration coming up within the next 2-3 videos, though it’s just the mortise lock without any backplates or door knobs. Thanks a lot for watching!
The Wizard of Restoration does it again. Always amazing watching the process and the final product. Like everyone else I am awaiting the next one. You are like the pinnacle of restoration we aspire to achieve.........
Thank you very much for the kind words, Steve! I have a very cool lockset coming up in a couple videos that should turn out looking great, so stay tuned!
Iam sure there’s something we all don’t know about this guy. At the moment you could recognize the 'face' on this lock, every animal outside totally freaked out. Like some sort of demon animal portal which was reactivated by the restoration. Maybe the 'icebox' he’s talking about is some sort of the underworld he’s trying to open. So in my opinion a perfect restoration, cause the animals told us it all worked perfectly fine. Hugs from Germany bro! 🙂
Shhhhh you already know too much 😆 Thanks a lot, man! If the animals approve of it I reckon it’s job very well done. Though when I show the completed projects to them they feel inclined to chew on them for some reason hahaha ❤️

Lovely restoration. And I know this is an old lock but the simplicity of the mechanism surprised me. It's just a latch with a simple item to hold the latch in place. Yes it was for an ice box so not a lot of security was needed even back then (it was more to ensure the door stayed tight to keep the ice from melting). Still I expected just a touch more. Nice surprise
Yeah there are a lot of smaller latches like this that are surprisingly very simple. They really went for the smallest number of moving parts and as a result it’s not very secure at all haha. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for being (likely) my biggest fan from South Dakota who, much like myself, seems to have the worlds weirdest sleep schedule 😆 Thanks for watching!

Great vids. Love watching something old become new again, but then I like the patina of old things too...speaking of old things, if I could make one suggestion... your funny captions could be a few seconds longer? Before my old brain has registered it's there, it's gone again :-P
Ice used in ice boxes for refrigeration of similar foodstuffs in today's fridges around this time that this lock was made were shipped by boat from the arctic in blocks the size of a car. Or in that times terms half a steam train or a stagecoach without horses. By the time it got to point b it would have shrunk just about enough to fit into one ice box depending on precious block size. This industry was alive till the late 1940s.
Very cool, thanks for all the info! The logistics of cutting and transporting ice from the Antarctic to the consumer sounds like a total nightmare hahaha. I really would have never guessed this was done as late as the 1940s. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Rich! It really depends - I found this lock on eBay, but many other hardware items I restore (especially sets, such as the doorbell I recently restored) are purchased from a mix of websites. One part may be bought on Esty, one on eBay, and one from a website such as Olde Good Things in order to get a complete set. Thanks a lot for watching!
Thanks a lot! There usually are a bunch of goats chilling just outside the window of my work area, and they were definitely a lot more vocal in this video!

Hello again! I really enjoyed watching this piece, as I find old school icebox refrigerators fascinating. Once again, it is difficult to find constructive feedback for you. You've reached a point where the major limiting factor for you is equipment. For a specific example, the rear cover for the latch presumably fit its opening perfectly, or nearly so, when it was manufactured, and has lost significant material to rust in the intervening decades. You could weld additional material to that plate and make it a perfect fit, to elevate the project further, and likewise for the worn brass, but that's a serious hardware and materials investment for a minimal return on quality. I really feel that both your skills and instincts have become top notch, not only from a functional standpoint, but an aesthetic one as well. As always, I look forward to future projects, and thank you for sharing your art with us.
Apologies for the late reply, but as always, thanks a lot, James! I totally agree, the biggest limitation right now is a lack of additional tools. A welding setup would be a great addition, as well as a lathe. There have been a number of times that parts have been worn enough to warrant machining a new one, and it would have been great to get them replaced! I really appreciate all the kind words! I have another very cool (and this time broken) 1880s-1890s ornate lockset coming up in a couple videos, and is shaping up to be a great restoration, and has been great fun too. Thanks for watching!
¡Gracias!
Excellent restoration. I am unashamedly going to steal your threaded rivet idea, I have a perfect place on a project I am working on. Thank you for the video, I always enjoy them.
I appreciate it, Terry! Hahaha it’s a bit of work to get the river lookalike screw but totally worth the effort in my opinion, good luck on your project and thank you for watching!

And it’s lookin’ even better now! Thanks for watching!
Nice bit of machining with what I refer to as the poor man's lathe. I have got good results using the same technique making brass bushings.
Hahaha yeah that's pretty much what I'd call it too. It's surprisingly useful for how basic of a method it is! Thanks a lot for watching!

A lock for the icebox. Neat idea. Keeps unwanted grazers from stealing food.
It'd definitely not too bad of an idea, and it sure looks nice too! Thanks for watching!
So much brass in this old lock. They look like the same texture used in coin making.
