  • Ireland faces one of Europe's worst housing shortages. Its roots lie in the global financial crisis of 2008, when banking failures burst the country's credit-fuelled property bubble. Today, the sector is still suffering, and the far-right is blaming it on refugees. Our correspondent Claire Herriot reports from Dublin.

      No, we had a housing crisis long before that.
      NIMBYs, the banking sector causing the great recession and a collapse of housing and public transport construction, and taxation incentives making investors treat property as an investment they hoard and do not rent out are the causes.
      If anything, more immigration is required to allow us the trained manpower to build sufficient housing.

      Government ignorance has led us to this. Sure, we have no room for immigrants, but we don’t have room because the Government hasn’t focused on affordable housing and continues to let investors charge high rents.
      Politicians will use this anti-immigrant sentiment to fuel their own interest. For the benefit of nobody.

    Gotta say, that placard says it all, "Raise the roof, not the rent!". That is the solution. High rise buildings will permit more supply, and lower rents. But NIMBYIsM and cultural values and highly restrictive building codes and zoning prevent higher buildings which would help. Building higher buildings won't destroy the equity of existing homes, that's a red herring, a phantom fear. If that were true, you'd see evidence of it elsewhere, which you don't.

    • @bikeman9899
      @bikeman9899 7 месяцев назад

      @GreyWhiteBlue Many say that, but a) it's not true and b) even if it were true, what option is there?
      If we don't build up, the only option is sprawl. Now, that really disturbs the landscape with more roads, longer commutes and stress on ppl and the environment. b) the alternative to sprawl is density, and that means building higher buildings. These don't have to be ugly blocks like Ballymun. Paris , Madrid and Vienna have multi story residential structures that accommodate a much higher density of ppl than Irish codes permit today.
      The human side is most important. Young ppl are forced to emigrate bc they cannot afford a place to live in their home country. That's the real tragedy.

    The Irish government needs the housing crisis. Without it, all hell would break lose. Without a housing shortage, house prices might fall which could cause negative equity. People would stop paying their overpriced mortgages which would cause more mortgaged properties to fall into negative equity and prices would spiral downward until true price discovery is achieved. This would be a catastrophe for the Irish government as they borrowed 200 billion euro to reblow the bubble that popped in 2008.

    Ireland has restrictive planning permission to build more houses and by giving asylum seekers more rights than Irish renters has created this problem it’s like going to a very busy night club that is full to capacity , until some people leave more can’t be allowed in Irish politicians don’t want to comply because they are complying with the WEF agenda like America’s open borders.

      I am suspicious of charities generally but I don`t blame immigrants. What is happening to our country has a lot of cause and consequence behind it. Over the decades, various referendums were held and people have not always contrasted what they were told with what makes sense.

      @LeMerch 7 месяцев назад

      Hold on, because you don’t know wha you’re talking about.
      This charity is tiny. Yes they are doing good things but it’s a tiny charity.
      Irelands population is now at 20% foreigners. What other country has let their population become 1/5th foreign in a matter of a few years?
      Our government prioritise foreigners here thru policies enacted in parliament.
      Our native people are being ignored. This is happening before our eyes. She isn’t a racist, she’s saying the truth and people like you and others will just label her - a homeless old lady, a native. You’ll look down on her. Which is proving just how bad this is getting.
      We aren’t even blaming immigration, we are blaming our own government.
      On top of this, we have illegals coming here in huge numbers like never before and causing mayhem on our streets. Stabbing little children, beheading men and so on. So please don’t comment unless you understand what we native Irish are enduring on our own land. You spoke too soon.

    history says that each generation will be able to own a home if they want to and have patience. Each real estate cycle reaches a crisis level and then tempers, allowing each generation to make the periodic transfer from rents to mortgages.
    Real estate crises are periodic; they are also called financial crises - pension funds - savings funds that evaporate periodically from the financial system. The real estate crises are given by the periodicity of the conflict between each generation entering into rents and mortgages.

    • @alpinismutilitar3886

      The long cycle of "Age dependency ratio, young (% of working-age population) - Ireland " boom bust cycle.
      Ireland, like other countries that have gone through this, is on the verge of a severe social and financial crisis. After the crisis starts, social decay will start with it; then the access to the new generation will be gradually opened with the cost of the aging population as a percentage of the market.
      Any Irish economy does not reflect real fundamentals; it is based on financial economic policies of the ponzy scheme and forms Leprechaun economics. Somewhere in the future, this monopoly will be broken, but at the cost and sacrifice of society; triggering worlds of non-performing loans and bankruptcies after bankruptcies. Until then, eat - have fun and credit, the payment time is fast approaching.
      Politicians and financial institutions will start as soon as possible to inflate the credit bubble even if the crisis will intensify in the future. This crisis is going to reach catastrophic levels ahead; and not only in Ireland but in several countries around the globe that were "financially speculated" for tax havens.
      When the financial speculators will see that the "wind" of fiscal and monetary policies is changing in their favor; they will be the first to crowd out the front door; collapsing with them and the speculative economies to their historical base levels. (it doesn't necessarily mean that they will all collapse nominally, but in terms of purchasing power at correct historical levels - history demonstrates in Japan, Italy, Ukraine, Moldova, Spain, Portugal, UK the repeated...)
