日本の大行進曲(Grand March)を挙げよといわれてこの曲を挙げる人も少ない「マーチ貧困時代」の今日、祝典行進曲として出色の出来を誇るこの曲は、明らかに日本マーチ史に残る秀作として殊更に顕彰すべきだろう。
第1マーチのきめ細やかな旋律は片山兵曹でなければまず不可能、そこに海行かばを被せるなど、斉藤丑松少尉ですら肝を抜かれたのではないだろうか。
先代が築き上げた第1・第2マーチの構成を真っ向から破ってみせた片山兵曹は、流石に人呼んで「天才」。
海自音楽隊長時代の後年、移動中の列車内の吊り革に掴まって編曲していたというエピソードまで残っている。
