      I got negative feedback that said, the item was perfect but the package was too hard to open. What!?! I emailed them and asked if they would prefer that I wrap it lightly and it arrived broken. They decided to change the feedback!

    Nice to see that I am not the only one making custom boxes. I have made hundreds of them. I have a general template in my head and plenty of large sheets of cardboard. Once you make a few it becomes easy. I can whip some out in less than 5 minutes. Then.... there as are others that require special attention. One thing I do that helps tremendously, is when I score for a bend, I use a yard stick to run my tool along for a crisp straight edge. I also pay special attention to making it as easy as possible for the recipient to open without damaging the item. We sometimes put special opening or caution instructions on the box. Another tip is to try to keep the box under 1728 cubic inches whenever possible.

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  5 лет назад +4

      I actually like making boxes. It's sort of creative in a way. Yes it becomes second nature. I have the whole thing planned out in my head before I list it even. I have a metal yard stick I use as well. I don't worry so much about crisp corners any more. If they are bulged and un-even it makes it harder for the Post Office to stack heavy items on top of the box. We used to have a small direction paper thing for some of our packages, but don't mess much with it these days. Our buyers love the care that we take to wrap their items, and to many it's like opening up a Christmas present. I don't worry so much about the size as we use UPS, FedEx, Airborne, and the PO. So the larger ones we mostly send via UPS for some locations, and Fedex for others. We have a business account with them, and a discount rate so it's very reasonable for even the larger items. We charge for shipping as well so either way it doesn't affect our bottom line.

    Would love to see the picture frame video. I am far too lazy to ship this way. I wrap my item well, then put it in a box that gives me extra 1-3 inches all the way around and pack it with peanuts on bottom, sides, and top. So far I haven't spent over 15 dollars to ship an item (buyer pays). If it's really large I usually ship FedEx. So far no broken items. Thanks for the tips though! If I ever run out of peanuts this will definitely be a nice alternative.

    I also make my own boxes, saves money if I do Free Shipping or Cubic Priority, plus it avoids having to do void fill. I do however use box resizers, perforator wheels, and box cutters rather than a big 'ol Bowie knife, but it all works out the same in the end I suppose. So long as it gets there in one piece is all that matters. Cheers!

      It's a dull steak knife. As I've said no razors are used here. So much safer to use a knife. No damage to the counters, clothing, or hands this way. Never had an issue in more than 10 years of doing it this way. It's also far easier to control a steak knife than a box cuter also.

    I was always yaught that the bubbles should face the item being protected as it gives more cushion and more protection - less chance of individual. Bubbles or whole sections/strips of bubbles getting popped.

    • @TheAuctionProfessor
      @TheAuctionProfessor  5 лет назад +1

      In this case that wouldn't make sense as we don't wrap it around the item directly. The foam is the protecting part, and the bubble wrap is the buffer between layers. For the most part it doesn't matter which way they go on most items. On a few it may make more sense to put them in or even out. Foam padding is far more protective then the bubble wrap as well.

    I also vote for a tutorial on packing large frames with glass!!!!!
    I did shipping and inventory in an electronics manufacturing company and saw one or two teeny tiny parts shipped in big boxes with lots of pink electrostatic safe bubble wrap. I learned that you never can be too careful which has served me well but I overdo it and need to pack smart. Ups workers do stand on boxes.
