Well he has made a few instances where he gave random facts about how certain words being said in French sounds like a swear word so not surprised that he actually would
I'm Canadian (south west), French is a mandatory second language from late elementary school through middle school, and then in highschool you get to choose another language. I chose German so I can speak with my extended family, because where I live, nobody speaks French. Never needed it, never wanted it. German and Punjabi would have been way more appropriate languages to learn growing up.
French is a useless language within south western Canada, and is only really required due to the treaty that was signed where Quebec screwed over all the other provinces. The TLDR of it is we made amendments to our charters and what not to appease them so they would sign off on it and join us. One of the things was to make French mandatory teachings and for products to include French descriptions. Then when we did all that, they gave us the middle finger and didn't sign. So we were stuck with it. This is why the non-French provinces have distaste for Quebec, and why we mock the French.
Of course, if you wish to get into a government political party position, you must be fluent in French as well. I don't understand why, when we have translators available, but oh well.
Edit: I've forgotten pretty much any French I learned in school. As I said, it's useless where I live, and as the saying goes, "Use it, or lose it".
