Once again I love this flosstube you put up. I’m watching them in reverse. Thank you for all the time and research you have put into these videos! It’s so relaxing to listen to you and learn so much about stitching from years gone by. Thanks Darlene 😊

For lobsters- It’s just a guess, but lobsters were viewed as representative of the resurrection/rebirth, because they shed their “skin” - so religious symbolism. There’s also a whole tradition of lobsters/crabs/shellfish in general coming out of medieval art which may have been the influence. As for lions, there are also religious associations, as well as all sorts of the usual- regal, bravery, etc. If you want to go down some fun rabbit holes you can look up lions in medieval Europe. A lot of those symbolic references are all over samplers from Europe right through the 1800s. Anyway. I’m just gonna go back into my nerd cave now. Have a lovely day!

Hello Paisley Stitcher! I am following you from Italy! I loved this flosstube, as you showed us so many beauties. I think I'll rewatch it soon, because there is a lot of gorgeousness. I am very interested in european samplers and I like the quirkiness of their motifs. I do like a British sampler, but they are ofter symmetrical and I think it's boring to repeat the same motif two times. So I always look for patterns without repetition of motifs. I think that, among modern designers I like Teresa Kogut. She has wonderful pattens that are not with the same motifs. After I watched your video, I looked for information in my books. The two that I have are: "Embroidery Motifs from Old Dutch Samplers" and "Sampler Motifs and Symbolism". I read that the bunch of grapes symbolizes the Jews and the grape itself Christ. The two men holding a grape are Joshua and Caleb. The vines are the symbol of the blood of Christ and the wine of Eucharist a in "I am the true vine". I have a wip by Gigi R dedicated to these two. It is by Kunst & Vierlande (I think this is the name), and I am stitching this with a Sulky variegated red floss. I am the beginning, but it's nice. I love the variegated floss and it effect. The peacock means obviously vanity and pride, but even deification and symbol of knight. It can be also a symbol of immortality. The lobster can be used to symbolize soldier of the Roundheads and any red coated british soldiler. But the samplers are from Saxony, so I thnk there should be another meaning... The lion is the symbol of Christ as the victor and in Middle Age it represents the three natures of Christ. I can send you pictures of the snippets of my books, if you don't have. Just let me know! I really like Gigi R samplers, as they are unique. I also downloaded three patterns from 1884 Stitchery. McKenna patterns are great! I have SANQ collection of magazines and there are some awesome samplers, like Susan Rambo sampler. Other samplers you may like are by Permin of Copenhagen: Sampler 1749, Sampler 1830, A Dutch Beauty, Sampler 1852 HH281168. If we only had the time to stitch all the samplers we love!

This is my first time watching your flosstube and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you look at the Saxony coat of arms, you will see lions depicted, and the grape vines may be representing the wine regions of Saxony/Germany.

Hi from Dresden (Saxony 😇) Germany 🇩🇪 I’ve really enjoyed, listening to your Flosstube ❤ I do have the Scarlet letter Design “SDW” and once wrote about it to Scarlett Letter that I’ve likely lived across that (!) church which is on the sampler (Maria on the Water is the Name of the church. I’m now back (lived 15 years in 🇨🇦 and 10years in the 🇺🇸) There is also a sampler “REH 1746” by European Reproduction-Samplers which is from Saxony and has very “funky” unusual motives, you might like (goat, lion, peacock, birdhouse, deer and many more 💞

How fun and very interesting to learn about the motifs on the Saxon samplers!! The motif of the guy you said had a pipe reminded me of the Riccola cough drop commercial. Thank you so much Grace. You have a wonderfully generous soul. Your sharing of the Saxony information was fun and informative. I enjoy learning about early stitchers and their motivations and sources. Lovely. The one thing I can add is that those birdhouses with birds are actually “dove cots” placed and nurtured by the home owners as a readily available (convenient) meat source for special meals. Knowing that makes seeing those houses in a different light…. Thank you for coming back and sharing. It was wonderful-again!❤

Even though I didn’t get the Letters from Europe box, I preordered the project bag from Stitchfolk and received it last week. It is beautiful. I also started my first Hands Across the Sea sampler, Maria Ewin 1820 that lives in that bag. I bought the three tea towels. My name is Ann so the two Ann towels are perfect. The third Jane Fiddes towel will be a gift for my sister Jane who is also a stitcher. My plan is to make Ann Thomas into a quilted wall hanging. Ann Uffindell will become a project bag.

I finished my ATS sampler and love it. I think some of the red stitching in the original antique has worn away. So the red thing under the house on the left is a remnant of maybe a red alphabet row. Also there is a red remnant in top left corner of top section that could be part of lettering.

Thank you Roberta! Since uploading the video I learned the lobster is really a crab or crawfish. The symbolism is the crab shedding it’s shell and represents the resurrection. So interesting!! Thank you for watching and commenting!

Fantastic video, Grace! You are so inspiring! I have started Gigi's Saxony sampler as well, not finished though. You can find a few other Saxony's from Sabine Taterra at European Reproduction Samplers. I am also a huge GigiR fan, and was thrilled to see your yummy finishes and those that will one day be 🥳 Your stitching is fabulous, as are your sampler choices. Thank you for sharing and making such a bright spot in my day!! Heading for my Gigi R stash, donchaknow....💖💖

Could the lobster be a fresh water crayfish? Fascinating history. Although, if you think about it they would have been in awe of exotic animals they had seen for the first time so would have wanted to capture them in their samplers.

Thank you for such an educational video! Your finishes are gorgeous, as they always are! The HATS tea towels were available to pre order again but the list may be filled by now. I got on the pre order list 😊. For stitching over 1 on higher counts you could try using Soie Surfine which makes a beautiful full cross stitch for over 1 work.

Beautiful stitching. I have a question and a comment. when you order from XJUdesign direct from Hungary, do your packages come to your house or do you have to go to the post office to pick up (usually a customs policy, not a signature requirement)? I ask because despite my love of our postal system, my local branch 'misplaces' packages being held a good portion of the time. If it's a direct to the door regular shipment, no problem. I would love to know! And my comment is about the peach color of the knight in the Gigi R stitch. Colors didn't become gender specific until the 1940's. there were colors that were more popular for girls, younger, older and in between, marital status, etc. but a man in pink or pastels was not considered girly. Colors did have meanings depending on the times and locations but in general, they weren't gender specific. And as you know by recent times, we are having a hard time letting go of these biases. Thanks so much for your content and love seeing all your work.

Initially the packages went to the Post Office. At some point she just started sending them directly to my home. Not sure why other than I was ordering from her regularly. Might be worth emailing her and asking if she can send it to your home. I thought the peach on the Knight was just a quirky selection and nothing to do with gender. Maybe there is some meaning to it, for that time???? Thank you for commenting on my video!

Apparently you can use 1 thread on 36 ct. It is too late to change on your Hawk Run piece but if you do another piece, maybe try it.

    • @paisleystitcher1243

Agree. I struggle with 36 count as I do not like the coverage with one strand and the bulk using two threads. What do you use on 36 count? Thanks for watching!
