THE PURSUIT OF R2 | 230" MULE DEER | 6 YEARS

  • This video shows what can happen when a deer is given the opportunity to reach his prime and then some! R2 is the deer that sparked my interest for high country mule deer hunting. I learned so much in the years watching him. I hope you all enjoy this documentary/hunt.
This video also gives me the opportunity to set the story straight. There have been a number of rumors spread when it comes to what happened while hunting this buck. Most of them are nowhere near the truth. I'm not here to name names and point fingers, only to tell exactly what happened.
Thanks for watching and thank you for your support!

Social media has ruined a lot, especially when it comes to the outdoors. This is a harsh lesson of why it's best to not post certain things. Beautiful buck and I would have rather seen you harvest him more than anyone else. I hope one day I get to see a buck like this, not many out there like that now a days.

Hopefully the number one lesson you’ve learned from this is to not post pictures of live deer on social media. It’s nobody’s deer until their tag is out on it, regardless of how many years of scouting or trail camera images someone has

I wouldnt expect someone myopic and dense enough to do that to ever learn their lesson from it. Thats the whole reason these football rinella loving wannabes hunt, ATTENTION. Its why they have to have a 6000 inch buck or bull and the latest kuiu panties for their instagram account.
Social media and its consequences have proven disastrous not only for hunting, but for mankind in general

The guy that killed the buck had a similar amount of time invested in the buck too. Many, many hunters knew about this buck. If a deer is on the extended archery, he has been seen by many eyes

Man what a story and an education you received. As a hunter, you probably know that the great spirit is a mystery and talks to us in different ways, the ways that we need to to hear in order to know ourselves deeper and deeper. To know ourselves like the creator knows itself. Sometimes an animal will give himself , his life, to a hunter . He will sacrifice himself to be food for another being so the circle of life continues. It is a sacred hoop and we have our unique part in it too. R2 gave himself to that other hunter for reasons unknown, maybe he needs the meat more. R2 gave something more value to you, a deeper connection to the hunt itself, the language of us all, the subtle language of the natural world. Learning that language is more precious than the harvest because it teaches us our purpose while we walk this Earth for such a brief time. Wopila Tunkashila, yu'waste'.

Oh Martin... such a bittersweet story. And it speaks volumes as to what kind of person you are. The dedication to pursue something you love and the journey you took documenting all of these experiences makes this such a touching, moving story. Yes, R2 is an impressive buck, but to me the way you handled this situation-even the interactions with others and the way you shared the experiences with the other "hunter" when you had every right to speak poorly, you didn't, tells me that you are an even greater person than R2 was a buck. You close the chapter on this deer with integrity, honor, knowing you did the right thing. Personally I'd rather have that then to look at a massive buck on the wall with an empty, hollow feeling knowing I had perhaps been unethical, perhaps used information I didn't put the work into obtaining, perhaps not respected the space of another hunter to harvest such an animal. Thank you for your example and for being a great person, I have no doubt you will harvest a dream buck with honor soon!

Sometimes with public land you run into tough situations like that, but it’s important to realize that it’s important for us as hunters to get along regardless of those situations.

Chasing "one buck"... R2 is pure motivation. Everyday for 6 years you had the dangling carrot to hike up the mountain. You can always hold to the fact that R2 taught you to hunt....You had a great 6 year cat and mouse hunt with R2 that the OTHER HUNTER can never take away from you. Your video story could possibly earn you more praise and respect than if you had shot the deer. The size of the deer is no question incredible. But your drive was showcased in your video and relentless effort put into chasing him... the true hunt was in the details of years spent chasing him. Your shed hunt for example, while stepping on the shed...what a great outcome and crazy story! Day after day... non stop of hiking up and glassing him up. I really enjoyed hearing and watching your footage. Thanks for the years and time spend putting this wrap up of R2 together. Karma has a great way of manifesting itself. Your time with a monster buck and bulls will keep coming. Keep the videos coming. See you on the hill.

I got lots of antlers off this wild stag ! So totally understand your passion following up on one particular deer 🦌! Shame R2 didn’t make it to good old age as he may of grown some more interesting heads ! But I guess to many people hunt for the best heads they can get ! If you got a chance have a look on my channel under thumb nail of me holding the stags head & antlers! He made it to 13 years of age ! The only reason he made it to old age was due to one person ! Which was the main stalker in his wintering grounds ! Who wanted to see what a stag could develop in its full life ! Which is bloody rare ! Sorry for long message! But totally get your passion!!👍🦌

Hey man. Sorry to hear. I unfortunately have had this same type of situation with other hunters happen to me at least 10 to 15 times in my life.
Super frustrating to have other hunters disregard our work ethic and determination to an area and animal. But, we are hunting public land and thats how it goes. I grew up in Arizona and now live in Seattle Washington and hunt the east side of the a state. More than any other state I have hunted, a majority of the hunters here have no respect for other hunters. If I even see a truck parked in an area I have planned to hunt I will leave them be, where other hunters will not only park by me, but see me, then come sit 100 yards away from where I am glossing and sit and watch the animals I am watching. It happens way too much.
I still haven't shot a nice buck and I have hunted my whole life. When it seems to be coming together it always seems someone else shows up.
I feel you bro. Good luck on your next buck. You obviously have a good area figured out and you have that going for you.

I feel for you. Over the years I have been pushed out of my spot by people who figured out where I hunt, I have been pushed out of my camping spot of 20 years by someone who knew I camped there and when I showed up 3 days early to set up, they had set up their camp the weekend before blocking me out. Taking a hunting spot, camp or deer from someone intentionally is not only disrespectful, I consider it unethical as well. If a person is not able to locate their own deer and hunt them, then they should not be hunting. Yes it is public land but hunting and taking the deer they knew you were after is a form of stealing. The lowest form of low.

Always tough when you put in all the time and effort then something like this happens. I am in the habit of hanging my trail cameras 15 feet up, keeps them from getting stolen. Spend months scouting, stalking, and patterning bucks. Then during season all you see is people appearing on your cameras. I had one guy camera 2 of the exact same tree as I set my camera on. Then he ended up blowing my hunts. Scared off deer I had drawn back on. But this is the battle of public land hunts. Too many folks don't respect another mans hunt. I did however knock down a 175" whitetail that we were both tracking.

That story hurt me as much as it did to you because i can sympathize with you as I had a kinda similar situation with an elk i arrowed. watched him for 2 years, finally got in and unlucky shot wounded him. Told a local “buddy” if he sees any crows to give me a call, week later him and his buddies went in and shot him with a rifle.

There is always three sides of every story. I can see why they the other hunters would tell you that they didn't know that you were there just to avoid any sort of confrontation. In much the same way that you avoided confrontation at the ground blind and at the trail head. To me, that's just human nature and good judgement since everyone is armed. You made judgements of this persons hunting skill indicating that he was blowing all the deer out. You further suggested that the only way that this hunter found this deer was because he was following your social media. If that's true isn't that just good e-scouting? You said that they took over your glassing spot (on public land where it seems that you blew his hunt first). I haven't heard the other hunter's story but it seems from yours that there is plenty of disparaging to go around for both of you.
It seems odd that you would knowingly walk within close proximity of another's hunters ground blind (close enough to hear a whisper), unless you were absolutely certain without a doubt, that no one was hunting there and that there was no other way. How many thousands of acres is this specific spot of public land? Hunting from a ground blind is ambush hunting that requires a animal to stand on x marks the spot and by it's nature is immobile. It seems to me that you walked your scent through the area wrecking his hunt long before he slighted you.
You stated that the guy got out of the ground blind changed his tactics and began spot and stalk. You said that he had a spotter. I've never heard of anyone using a spotter while ambush hunting. I would guess that the second guy was either in the blind with the shooter while you walked by, or he was more likely attempting to push the deer closer to the blind. It seems to me that this blind hunter had no choice but to change his tactics to pursue the deer he was targeting, due to your hunting pressure.
Perhaps both of you got a bit carried away with the antlers and it proved stressful and maybe a somewhat unrewarding hunt for the both of you.

Listen to my follow up video. It’s simply not the fact. Everything I heard was from the horses mouth or witnessed with my own two eyes. You don’t get to put a ground blind with bait out on public land and leave it out for months claiming that area. Out of the number of times there has NEVER been someone in that blind so I’m not going live my life in fear of the ground blind guy. The lay out of the mountain called for ONE way up after that deer and that was the way up. Two years after the fact I’ve heard rumors spread and anything but the facts put out there. I’m simply telling it straight
