Considering what you have to work with as far as tools, You Sir did a good job.. Consider cleaning the carbon off the grooves on the piston with the old piston rings and an attempt to clean the journals on the crank, maybe polish..Also clean the Head as well thoroughly and valve seats.
Suggestion for your next rebuild. On these types of engines, you need to remove the rust and scale from the water jacket area in the cylinder block and cylinder head. By soaking the entire engine block and cylinder head in a barrel filled with hot water and CLR or any other rust/lime dissolving chemical this will improve the heat heat exchange into the water jacket. Also, by adding a water pump, fan and radiator, you will extend the engine's life and then it can actually be used more heavily than was originally designed. Lastly, when running this engine in the future, do not use plain water, use a mixture of water and a light cooking oil if you do not have automotive type coolant/antifreeze. Good job in the restoration work. Keep it up. You are doing a great job!!!

I enjoyed this immensely. Remined me of helping my dad work on engines when I was a kid. That is a great little engine. I had never seen a hand crank all mechanical Diesel before. Who was the manufacturer? I wonder if they were imported to the US? I bet that is very useful. You did a great job!
