Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I started photography during the pandemic and only have been using Lightroom CC. I keep getting frustrated when I watch tutorials and they don't look the same as mine. The inability to print was what got me looking for a solution and came upon your video. Solved all my problems.
An excellent explanation of how to use CC and Classic, Sean. Until today, I could not figure how I would use CC for my workflow. I also appreciate your quiet, slow delivery, much easier for non US folk to follow!
Since the release of iPadOS 13, I work on my photos with my iPad Pro on the go instead of my heavy macbook pro. I use lightroom CC to do some basic editing and it would sync back to Classic when I am home. For desktop, I don't use CC but you need CC to sync Presets to mobile though. So, you have to use CC as a middle man to sync Presets. When I'm outside, I use CC to do most of the job and export with classic at home.
Great video, very well done. I have avoided LR CC like the plague, you just opened my eyes to look at it from a different perspective, as a sharing tool. And I'm amazed by your pictures, they are beautiful!
Useful video! When I first started out in Lightroom I was using Lightroom Classic on a desktop pc. I was a newbie and made some mistaked with catalogs and lost files more than once. I was syncing to CC for my Iphone and Ipad to edit. I never went back to Lightroom Classic. Now that I have been using them for a few years I find myself missing a few tools from Lightroom Classic so I am researching how to incorporate both into my workflow. I do pay for additional could storage through Adobe so I like having the full RAW files in the cloud. I think I will upload to CC first to have full RAW in the cloud then edit in Classic on the desktop and CC on my Ipad. Thanks for the info!
I just wanted to tell you that your video is very professional. We are running a community videography training programme within our charitable organisation but you will be able to make excellent training videos - just this is almost perfect. Kudos.
Hi Sean Great video as usual and very useful info for many of us Lightroomers! Just want to clarify that it's not correct that your 6500 photos will take up 3 gigabytes of your Creative Cloud space. Images synced from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom CC do NOT count against your Creative Cloud storage at all. You can sync your entire catalog without any fear of filling your cloud space. I didn't believe this when I first heard it - but I got it verified more than once. This is GOOD news to all that wants to follow the workflow in this video.
Thommy Andersen Thanks for that info Thommy! That was not the general consensus I found back when I made that video but after doing some searching just now I was able to find a couple of sources that verify that Lr Classic smart previews do not count against cloud storage space. Great news!
I built my pc back in Sept/Oct of 2018 and then downloaded Lightroom classic. I downloaded pictures from my memory card. After a few weeks I decided to sync classic to my phone app. I didn't have the CC version on my pc at that time. When I synced my app to my pc I then had the files from my memory card and the duplicates from my app including raw files I had not edited in the app yet. So I ended up with some that had been edited on my phone and a copy of what I downloaded from my memory card that had not been edited on classic yet. It took up a lot of space but at the same time I got to edit certain pictures on my pc and compare them to what I did on my app to see how much difference using a 27" monitor would make. Just thought I'd share that info for anyone that hasn't synced their app yet. You may have to delete duplicates. My memory card is a 64 GB card. My C drive is a 500 GB NVMe SSD drive and my back up drive is a 2 TB mechanical drive. Keep this in mind if you have a small SSD drive. You'll have both the pictures from the memory if you haven't formatted it yet plus what was on your app. By the way, I forgot to mention this but I had been transferring raw files through a card reader from my memory card to my phone so I could take advantage of editing raw files through the app. That's why I had a lot of duplicates. They weren't from using the camera that's in the app. Thanks for the video Sean
Subscribed. This video is immensely helpful. Until I watched this video I was a Lr CC subscriber (with the 1tb of storage). However, all along I wanted to be using Clasic as my main app and then use CC as my mobile app. However, I didn't want to give up the 1tb of storage. After being educated by your video I just now switched the the Photography plan so now I have CC, Clasic and Photoshop. And it looks like the 20gb of storage will be plenty. Perfect. Thank you!
I'll add my vote for being able to sync smart collections! I've built my workflow and entire image organization strategy around a simplified folder structure with lots of collections, smart collections and collection sets on top of that. I also use color labels, but more to keep track of my workflow. I don't use star ratings very much - just in some cases as modifiers to the color labels.
This is so useful! I've tried so many variations to get a workflow that works for me, and thanks to you I finally got it! Really appreciate this video, Sean.
Excellent video! Your voice is pleasant and your presentation was spot on, the walk through from your LR desktop was easy to follow. I'm retired from commercial photography but have been wanting to start using the LR cloud as I do a lot of travel (well before Covid-19). This will help me to get my images imported and start editing while away and then access them when I get home. Much thanks!
I found this a very helpful video. I haven't been using Lightroom CC but have classic. I have installed CC but when I click as you indicated on my name in Lightroom it is not giving me the option of syncing with CC. Also, what I really want - more than the added flexibility and options that Lightroom CC offers - is a way to view all of my images in Microsoft One drive in a similar format to that which I can view all the images in a folder with Classic.
Great video Sean. I have Just started using CC and I have discovered that if you import images via Classic CC (The desktop one) and then sync with CC (The cloud one) it will only upload Smart previews to the cloud. If you import images directly into CC (The cloud one) it uploads the original files to the cloud. My devices have minimal storage and I use the 20 GB CC plan. I also download smart preview to my mobile devices so I can edit on the go.
Sean, couple points... You only need to install the LRCC on your home desktop for this to work. Only need it on a computer you want to be “mobile”. You did not discuss LR Web, which allows you to view your images from any browser. You can also share the album/collection so others can view it, but not others on web. As you mention, your ‘LRCC sync’ album was too big to find items. I use (and suggest) smaller, logical collections (mimicking a follower or logical grouping). On LR Classic, I group them in a collection set (maybe called ‘LRCC sync’). Then on LRCC you can set up a folder (called ‘LRCC sync’) and manually move the albums to it. A little extra manual step, but well worth it to later find items.
Super helpful thank you. I just started on Lightroom cc but as I organize more in finder I want that to match in Classic, now I can choose to sync the ones I want to edit on the go or post for social.
Ohhhh, thanks Sean! I could not figure this out at this basic level and kept running into videos that wanted to show me how to do...in Lightoom (not Classic). Arghhh! Now I think I've got it! I think the terms Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC and Lightroom Mobile are very confusing . I finally got Classic and CC but Mobile - why did that pop up? Anyway, thanks again.
Great instruction! The pace was very helpful. New user to the Adobe Lightroom Ecosystem. I'm still hung up on the "All Photographs" vs syncing collections thing. I take a photo on my iPhone via LR and it shows up in "All Photos" on the phone AND my Lightroom Classic. I am concerned about space in the cloud. Is there a way to prevent "All Photographs" on Lightroom Classic from showing up in "All Photos" on my iPhone also?
Sean. Thank you for that. it was so intuitive you wouldn’t believe. I’m in lockdown at the mo so I’m going to get it sorted from the beginning with a new Lightroom cat., thanks let’s get organised.
Excellent information, I’ll follow your lead and set this up. Now this brings up a question, I have an iMac, MacBook Pro along with an iPad. Classic installed on both computers, will install CC on my iPad. Will I be able to sync between all three devices?
Hello Sean, I like your style of teaching, straight talk with a story line. I like when the host does a recap, it brings all the information together. Job well done! Look forward to seeing your new content.
Hello Sean, please forgive if i missed the answer to my question. You showed us how to sync a smart view photo (or collection) from classic to CC or add the original raw photo in CC taken from classic. What about a full sized edited raw photo processed in classic to CC, so I don't have to edit flow twice? Thanks, Ian
Hi Sean. Great video thanks. I have done this before, and I am going to try again as I didn't succeed. I have Collections syncing in Lightroom Classic, and everything has sync'd. When I open Lightroom CC, it does show the correct total photos as it does in Lightroom CC, so I know the total photos in the Cloud match. Now I mark all my photos by Stars ie: 2 Stars for edited but not final, 3 Stars for unedited etc etc. When I try to filter in Lightroom CC on number of stars, it does not match Lightroom Classic so for example I have 6746 3 Stars in a Sync'd smart collection, but when I filter on 3 Stars in Lightroom CC, it shows 9568. Do you have any ideas why? do they play friendly together with Metadata and Stars applied in Lightroom Classic, across to CC? I also don't see all my Photos either when no filters are applied, even though the total Photos is the same. Anyway, I will continue to try to problem diagnose this myself, but just in case you MAY know about this, I thought I would ask. thanks again !
You were right, I was that person not using the cloud service I have been paying for for three years.....doh!!! I shall now be taking full advantage of this in the future 👍🏻
Very useful info, Sean, thanks! I've never used my cloud storage because 20GB just isn't that much space to hold raw files. Thanks to you, I can now make use of that feature of the photography plan...Yay!
Hi, Excellent video. I am confused tho. Please bare with me lol. I have been using only LRCC and PSCC on my desktop and LRCC other devices. I do have all 3 apps (LRCC, LRClassic and PSCC) on my desktop (iMac) Is this the wrong way to do things? Should I only be using LR classic only on my desktop and CC on everything else including a laptop? Now I decided to open up Classic to use other features on my desktop along with CC and i think I'm messing things up. If I open one or the other it's asking me about closing one catalog and opening another. I have the cloud 1TB plan as well. I can't fine definitive answers on this. Can you kindly help me out. I also have the original files being saved to me desktop HD as well. I appreciate it, I don't want to mess things up. Should I just keep it this way lol? I kinda did things in reverse. I don't think I'm doing smart previews either. Everything I have is on the cloud. 260GB so far used. All of my albums from CC are syncing with classic. I know you mentioned Folders from Classic not syncing with CC.
Great information and explained really well! I'm starting a new workflow with my iPad with LR & PS native on it. I just got a card reader for the iPad and want to back up to it when I travel so I no longer have to carry my Laptop. I'm wondering if I can bring the camera raw images I read from my card into LR and then once they're on the cloud, if they'll be available on my Desktop or Laptop as originals so I don't have to load them again when I return home. Any feedback much appreciated!
Hi Sandy! That's the idea. But, a couple caveats...1. You need to have enough cloud storage available. 2. You need to have a good enough signal to get all the raw files up to the cloud wherever you are. If not they will still sync to the cloud when you get home...but don't erase your cards until you are sure.
A little late however - when I travel I upload all of my raw camera images to LR Mobile and even do some initial editing. I have a Fuji X-Pro2 and Ricoh GRIII. Plus the few iPhone X images. On my last (pre-COVID) trip I loaded about 500 images, maybe more, and the Clyde space used was negligible. It even had a prior large trip there too! I’ve never come close to the basic 29GB limit.
Thanks Sean for this great video. In want to use this mobile Lightroom CC on the iPad to do editing on the couch instead of being in front of the iMac. So if i sync a collection for editing on the IPad I would like to de-sync it after I am done. Are the edited photos still edited in the Lightroom classic folder after I erase the collection?
Thanks Sean! This was super helpful to me! The only thing that I was still confused about was the fact that LR CC will only allow you to sync one catalog, and I didn't have any communication between my desktop Classic and my laptop Classic, even though my phone, iPad, laptop and desktop were synching with LR CC just fine. After a lengthy support chat with Adobe I found that Classic is only meant to be used on one device. The solution is to leave synching on for Classic on my desktop (my preferred editor AND device) and turn off synching on my laptop so if I really need to use Classic I can do so without causing any issues with sync.
Question, Does your home Computer needs to be ON to synch your Raw photos from CC? I so appreciate you providing additional explinations. IF so this will allow me to work out in the field and not worry to hace having photos scattered on ALL the various devises.
I must have spent maybe 2 hours trying to explain how I wanted the workflow to work for me before subscribing to Adobe CC from Lightroom 5, Sean your video is pretty much exactly what I was after. I'm also going to create a collection called something like Lightroom CC portfolio, and always keep these on the cloud and they will be used for a website I'll make from Adobe Portfolio. The cloud will then just be used as a go between to link up my MacBook and iMac. Thanks so much for the video.
Great tutorial! I'm new to lightroom and the whole thing confused me at the beginning. Now I understand the workflow more! Question for you Sean, hope you can still see this comment after a year. Two questions for you: 1)Are smart previews really OK enough to work on? I'm not printing large images but want to confirm it has enough detail info to me edit, unlike jpg. 2) Lightroom Classic to CC, only smart previews will be uploaded to the cloud. from CC to Classic, originals will be uploaded. I only subscribed to 20GB package. If I work on my photos on the go (iPad pro), all my photos will be synced to the cloud in original format. The file size in total might be large or even over 20GB. What's your suggestion here? Thank you!
Hi Gary! 1 - In my experience the smart previews are fine for general edits. You can't do things like Photo Merge though. And, when you sync to your full res files the edits update and can be further tweaked at that time. 2 - In CC you should be able to change in the settings if you want the full raw files to upload to the cloud or just the smart previews. If you upload all raw files you will max out your 20GB limit quickly. You can get more cloud storage through Adobe, but it isn't cheap.
Thanks for the info! The collections you have on Lightroom Classic (from which you can choose to sync to Ligthroom CC) you have them saved to you hard drive/external hard drive? Thank you!
All the images in the LR catalog are saved on my hard drive, but the collections are just groupings saved in the LR catalog...not sure if that answers your question?
This video is very helpful! But I cannot find the sync option under my name tab in Lightroom Classic, what can I do? It only shows address look up and face detection options. I really want to learn how to not only sync Lightroom CC but how to sync Lightroom Classic on one device to another.
I only do it with the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom. I know that Lightroom classic has an insane amount of editing compared to the CC mode. The main reason I do it this way is for sharing purposes. I know I am losing out on a lot of the editing Tools in Lightroom classic by not using it. Thanks for the video I will be trying this from now on and switching over to Classic for more of my workflow.
Sean, after a shoot do you put all images from SD card into Lightroom then weed out the ones you do not want and then store everything else there always, even the images you are not editing at that time or do you put all images after a shoot somewhere on you computer or an external drive then just bring the ones over into Lightroom that you want to edit? Curious of your workflow and what way may work best storage wise and be less clutter. TY
You said that you’d be limited on export size... If your adjustments are sync back to Lightroom Classic & you export from Classic on your desktop/laptop are you still limited on image export size? Any work around? Having access from multiple devices would be nice but the ability to export a full res version if an edited image would be even nicer, even if only from the desktop.
If you make adjustments to the smart preview in CC and those are synced back to Classic you still have the full res file in Classic. Also, if you import the full res file in CC then the full res file will be in the cloud and accessible everywhere through the CC app.
Perfect! Also, if you are done with all edits in a synced collection & decide to unsync it with CC, all adjustments made will remain in Classic? Now that it has been a little while, have you noticed any other issues?
Terrific, instructive video as always! But I'm curious about what's your workflow when you're away from your desktop on a multi-day trip. If you're like me, you can't resist popping the shots in your laptop and doing some preliminary culling and edits. The upload from LR Classic on a laptop to LR CC won't work in that scenario if the goal is to have one master LR catalog on your desktop. In such situations, do you export what you've edited on your laptop as a new catalog and then merge that into your master catalog when you return home, or do you follow a different process?
As I understand it you should be able to add images into LR CC on your laptop and the original raw files will be uploaded to the cloud. When you get home the original raw files and any edits you made should be waiting for your in a LR CC folder in your LR Classic Catalog. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like a nice theory. Unless you only did it with a few images you might need to get more Adobe Cloud storage. You can supposedly sync to other cloud storage you already have as well (Google Drive, Drop Box, etc.). The video by Dan Watson I link to in the description explains how to set all that stuff up. I'm going to try it on a trip I have coming up next month, so we'll see.
I forgot to say also that once the original raws sync to your LR Classic Catalog at home you should be able to move them to other folders in your Catalog and then remove them from LR CC and the cloud if you want.
Great info. This has been so confusing. Thanks for the step by step. Question....You have a collection that is your Red and Green images. I thought it would be a Smart Collection. Yet it seems I can't sync a Smart Collection. Am I wrong? Thanks.
You are welcome and you are correct, syncing does not support smart collections. I don't know why exactly, but I'm assuming the fluid nature of smart collections makes it challenging?
Thanks, Sean, for your very interesting contributions. It might be worth posting a short video on how to properly transfer ProRAW shots from an iPhone to Lightroom (Mac) or even to Photos (Mac), in their full size so as to free storage space on the iPhone. I’m currently stuck with some 600 ProRAW pictures in my new iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 14.3) and just can’t find a path to upload them onto my iMac (I5 processor 3.3 GHz, Big Sur 11.1, 16 GB RAM, lots of storage space), either into Photos or Lightroom Classic 10.1. I’ve desperately tried to import via the USB cable, via iCloud, via AirDrop, and nothing works properly, being fully aware, of course, that the sheer volume of these ProRAW shots is way bigger than JPGs. Importing JPGs into Photos (Mac) and LRC (Mac) works seamlessly, though. Does anybody experience similar difficulties? If not, how do you proceed? Are there reliable Apple guidelines about the transfer process? Thanks to all.
I don't have the sync option in the drop down menu on the top left. Any idea? I've been searching for an hour now. There doesn't seem to be a lot about syncing lightroom to mobile on the web. I'm pretty new to this and most videos don't break it down from the beginning. Thanks for this video
@@TJ-yk8tq In one of the recent updates, Adobe moved this to a different location. You can now find it over on the right side of the header bar and it uses the cloud icon.
Hi Sean, I'm new to updated LR and LR CC in all their glory. Can you tell me how you put all your red- and yellow-tagged photos into your sync collection? I can only see how to do it one by one ... surely there's a better way I'm just not seeing?
Charity Feb Hi! You can use the filters (in grid view in Library module) to filter all your color labeled images. Then select them all and drag them into the collection. There are other ways to do it as well, but that’s the easiest to explain.
@@SeanBagshaw I really appreciate your quick reply! But ... it only lets me drag them one by one ... ? Also, while I have your attention ... what would you say the easiest way to take slideshows edited on a desktop Mac in LR CC, sync them to LR on a MacBook Pro, and show them to clients? I'm picking folks' brains on Lightroom Queen, but wonder what you do ... ?
Charity Feb Strange. No clue why you can’t drag a bunch. Perhaps you are trying to drag too many? Try just selecting three or four and see if that works. Regarding slideshows, not sure there. Last I checked only LR Classic had the slideshow feature. What I do is create a collection of images in classic on my desktop and then export smart previews to a flash drive to transfer to my laptop. Then I build the slideshow in classic on the laptop. Alternately you could make the slideshow on your desktop and then make a copy of the catalog and smart previews that you move to your laptop. When you open the catalog there I think it will have your slideshow settings? Maybe not. If you find different let me know. It would be easiest if they would put a slideshow sync feature in CC.
@@SeanBagshaw I know, it is strange. Nope, just trying three. Ha! I'll keep playing with it. Oh that sounds like a nice easy workflow, thank you for sharing it. Thank you so much for helping me out!
@@SeanBagshaw One more question, if I can bug you again please? How do you reconcile catalogs b/w your laptop version of CC and your desktop? Would it come back to haunt me if I created a default catalog in the laptop just to cycle through slideshow fodder? I'm sure later on I'll want to be able to edit on the go with it, but for now I just need the functionality of hi-res, clean slideshows for clients.
Great video since I am gonna redo my setup of LR, incorporating NAS backup, etc. Question though when using this method on one machine where both LR and LR Classic are installed. I assume the image resides three times on my machine, twice in LR Classic (Raw and the smart version) and once in LR (smart version only). Is this correct? Thanks, Geoffrey
I'd have to check on that. Not sure that a smart preview is saved in the LR Classic catalog...it might just be uploaded to your Creative Cloud and housed there? I'm sure a smart preview is downloaded into the LR CC catalog on your computer. Not sure if there is a way to keep it from doing this so you are only accessing images remotely from the cloud?
I have a question, if for example I add an image from an Sd Card into my iPad and then sync it, i will have this image later on my laptop at its original raw size ? And then I would be able to add it to the rest of my archive ?
Riccardo Tosi Yes, that is how it is supposed to work. In Lr CC you have the option to upload the original to the cloud and then sync that to your computer/laptop.
Yeah...Adobe keeps changing the names of their LR apps. Now LR CC is just called LR and LR Classic CC is LR Classic. Other than the names, everything else is the same last I checked.
Great video. I don't think that I would trust edits made to downgraded smart images. I can see the benefit of being able to use a mobile device for initial review, pre-culling. But I would be making the real reviews, markings, cataloging and deletes from my desktop or laptop. I can also see where it would be nice to review and discuss images with perspective clients outside an office or environment. The phone app looks neat and is probably good for phone captured raw images. I have not tried LR Mobile for almost two years because it kept crashing. I guess it is worth taking a look. One other concern is mobile data. I don't pay for unlimited data plans, so I would be limiting my use of LR Mobile to times when I'm on a WAN.
Tom Herriman All great points Tom. I agree. When I do any developing edits in LR CC they are just to get an idea of potential. But it is handy that those edits sync back to Classic so when I am on my main computer I have a starting point from which I can fine tune things...but still a time saver. The phone app has come lightyears from the old LR Mobile. It could certainly create a data issue if you have a limit and no access to Wi-Fi.
Is it not possible to sync a smart collection? That would be the easiest way. Otherwise I have to put the photos I want so sync manually in this folder.
Hello Sean, thank you. Any idea on what happens when we export from Lightroom CC, i mean since it only has Smart Preview, is quality good enough. If answer is yes then im thinking why do we need originals in Lightroom CC. If you could help understand in detail need of originals in Lightroom CC, i appreciate.
Smart previews are large enough for screen viewing and smaller prints. But I wouldn't get rid of the original raw files. If you want full-res files in LR CC then you can import them in directly.
I see folders of images to edit. Do you move them out once complete? Do you keep a master jpg or always go back to Lightroom for a fresh export each time an image is needed.
@@StephenDesRoches I actually cover all that in my Lightroom Essentials course, but maybe I should do a short version for RUclips. In brief, yes, once I have finished working with a group of images I move them out of Images to Edit into folders based on the location or subject matter. I do not keep master jpegs in most cases. I create output files from the master tiff file as I need them. I do keep some prepared jpeg print files of images that get printed frequently. And I also keep a folder of images sized for social media that I can quickly post from, but other than that I generate new output files from the master tiff when the need arises since they all end up being a little different in terms of size, sharpening and soft proofing.
Yes, it works both ways. I upload raw files to Lightroom CC while traveling and they are waiting for me in my Lightroom Classic catalog on my main computer when I get home.
Thanks Sean! Do you know how to delete the images from the "all images" and "recently added" folders in CC after you've done your editing? When I'm done and they're all synced up, the images still remain in those folders. I can delete the synced folder, but for some reason they still live in those folders on CC. thanks!
Hi Peter. Just like deleting a collection in LR Classic doesn't delete the actual images from the catalog/hard drive, un-syncing or deleting a synced collection doesn't remove the images from the cloud/LR CC. To actually remove images from the cloud/LR CC do this...in LR Classic go to Catalog at the top of the left panel in the Library module. Below "All Photographs" you should see "All Synced Photographs". Selecting and deleting photographs here will remove them from all synced collections and from LR photos in the cloud but not remove them from the LR Classic catalog.
So if I have my photos in lr cc and I sync to lr classic then does that download a second copy all of them or do the images stay in the cloud and just show a smart preview or proxy copy ?
Yep, full res copies are downloaded to your computer from the cloud, unless they already exist in your Lr Classic catalog. So you’ll have one copy in the cloud and one copy on your drive.
When I go to make a new collection, in the box where I can assign a name for the collection doesnt give me the option to check sync with lightroom cc.... In other words, I just dont get the option to sync even when I turn on sync with lightroom cc on the top left like you explained... Im logged in in both places with my adobe iCloud credentials... Any ideas?
@@guillermogiannini LR CC will only allow synching with one catalog, so if you aren't in that catalog, you won't see the option to sync your collection.
Someone help! I'm trying to sync photos between my main desktop pc and my laptop without having to use an external hard drive. Both light rooms are on the same account and cloud storage is turned on but I don't see the sync button next to the collection. What do I do?
Hey John...Adobe changed the layout of Lr a bit since I produced this video. The Sync feature is now up in the right corner under the little cloud icon.
Sean, for my workflow I use a laptop and a desktop. Can I set them both up with the same catalog (on a sync drive like Dropbox or OneDrive) and work on the raw images from either place? Thanks
Hi Adi. Great question. If you are using Lightroom CC (the mobile version) then this is precisely how it is intended to be used...as long as you have enough Creative Cloud storage to hold all your files. But I hadn't thought of using something like Dropbox to have that functionality with Lightroom Classic. I did a quick search and this article makes it seem like it is possible. Give it a read and let me know how it works. medium.com/t-brian-jones-fine-art-photography/using-lightroom-cc-classic-with-dropbox-for-a-great-cloud-experience-a428bd0f7bdd
@@SeanBagshaw I gave it a shot and while technically it is possible, it also created problems. The short version is this: LR likes to work with one catalog per computer. By sharing it, it created problems with the sync folder. The only way it works is by waiting for complete syncing of all images and folders, then closing down the program (including background processes) before opening in the second computer. Repeat to switch again.
@@ringeradi Thanks for the report and good to know. Adobe's solution to this problem is Lr CC which can operate entirely in the cloud. Eventually, I think the functionality of Lr CC will be complete enough that Lr Classic may become unnecessary.
Since I work remotely, most of the time, I started using the 2021 version of Lightroom with the images on the Creative Cloud. I already have 20,000+ images uploaded to Creative Cloud. Is it possible to sync FROM Lightroom to Lightroom Classic. Then when changes are made on either application, are they synced back to the other app? I do not want the images to be downloaded from the cloud to the hard drive of the Classic computer. I also use Lightroom on my Android mobile phone and sync with my Lightroom install. I watched your video and looked for a Sync menu item on my Lightroom but did not find it. I could not find the Sync menu item in my Lightroon Classic, but it is a clean install - no images - maybe that is why it wasn't visible. I was concerned that If I imported an imaged and then instructed it to Sync with my Lightroom that I would blow away all of my images and work in Lightroom. Please advise. Thank you!
Hi Ann. Since I produced this video, Adobe changed the Lr Classic interface a little. The sync controls are now located in the upper right corner where you see the little cloud icon. When you sync between Lr Cloud and Lr Classic all of your adjustments will sync back and forth from either location so that works just as you want...however, it isn't possible without downloading the full-res files to your Lr Classic catalog. Lr Cloud only uploads and syncs full-res files to the cloud so that is what also gets downloaded into your Lr Classic.

So, you have to use CC as a middle man to sync Presets. When I'm outside, I use CC to do most of the job and export with classic at home.
This! From the UK also, many thanks for your video.
This was very helpful (especially the cloud backup of selected RAW files).
Great video, very well done. I have avoided LR CC like the plague, you just opened my eyes to look at it from a different perspective, as a sharing tool. And I'm amazed by your pictures, they are beautiful!
Many thanks! 😁
Good post. Clear and concise. Making the move to mobile editing and your post summed it all up.
Thank you! Someone who really knows what they're talking about!
I just wanted to tell you that your video is very professional. We are running a community videography training programme within our charitable organisation but you will be able to make excellent training videos - just this is almost perfect. Kudos.
Hi Sean
Great video as usual and very useful info for many of us Lightroomers!
Perfect. Thank you!
Sean thank you so much. I am the one who did get the advantage off the methode and now you did! Thanks so much!
Chris Summers I totally agree with your comment here. Great job, Sean.
Terrific presentation, very thorough. Better than JK, TW and several other Adobers. Kudos!
Fantastic help......cheers !!!
Really helpful video, thank you!
Phenomenal!!! Thank you so much for this 👍
Super helpful thank you.
Very helpful, thank you
Great instruction!
Great thorough walkthrough! Subscribed!
Very nice informations!
Excellent information, I’ll follow your lead and set this up. Now this brings up a question, I have an iMac, MacBook Pro along with an iPad. Classic installed on both computers, will install CC on my iPad. Will I be able to sync between all three devices?
Yes! The smart previews upload to the cloud and then sync to all devices you have LR CC installed on from there.
Thanks, Ian
Whatever you do to the photo in lr classic will sync to cc in real time.
Thanks a lot, the exact informations I was searching for, and well explained! I subscribe ;)
You were right, I was that person not using the cloud service I have been paying for for three years.....doh!!! I shall now be taking full advantage of this in the future 👍🏻

Thanks for the info!!
really good - v useful video
Very useful info, Sean, thanks! I've never used my cloud storage because 20GB just isn't that much space to hold raw files. Thanks to you, I can now make use of that feature of the photography plan...Yay!
I felt the same way when I finally figured out how all this all works...from watching other people's RUclips videos. What would we do without YT? 😁
@@SeanBagshaw Thx, I usually don't erase until I'm sure. I'm assuming that the files also store locally on my iPad as a backup too.
@@SandyOstroff If you get a chance to try it, let me know how it all goes. I'm sure a lot of people would love to do the exact same thing.
Yes!
Very useful presentation, thanks! I really didn't understand how all the parts worked until I watched this.
Just came to the same conclusion before I read this comment. Thanks for the additional insight. @tonyreyimage
This clarified a lot of things for me. I'll give it a try!
Awesome video! Indeed very useful when one is on the road or waiting for an appointment!
Great tutorial! I'm new to lightroom and the whole thing confused me at the beginning. Now I understand the workflow more! Question for you Sean, hope you can still see this comment after a year. Two questions for you:
1)Are smart previews really OK enough to work on?
It’s my understanding that those Smart Previews (LrC images uploaded to the Cloud) do NOT count against your 20GB storage.
Terry Stoa That is now my understanding too. 😁
Great tutorial, thanks Sean.
Brilliant Sean!! I knew most features but there were a couple I didn't
Wow Thank you
Very helpful, thank you! Great dictation too.
I wish Smart Collections synced, as that makes up the bulk of my collections.
Greg Mitchell Agreed! Anybody from Adobe listening out there? 😜
@@SeanBagshaw Anytime a process is automated (i.e. "Smart Collections") it's a big time saver for me personally.
Agreed. Without it my mileage is very limited.
Same here, All of my collections are smart collections. But for instances where I know I'll be traveling this may work.
Useful video, I'll have to look into it. It's also cool seeing pictures from trinity, I live about an hour away!
Casey Thanks! The Trinities are awesome. I have so much more to explore there.
TY
Amazing!
I wish I found your amazing video 3 days ago. ! would save 20+ hours. :D Thanks
Isn't that always how it works. Ha! Glad you found it though. :-)
@@eyekandiart Yep...and no issues so far.
@@SeanBagshaw Thanks so much for taking time to respond!
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you, Sean!!!
Wonderful and helpful information about lightroom, thank you
Fantastic video as usual Sean!
Zack Schnepf Thanks buddy.
Does Adobe Sensei kick in to automatically know "mountains" vs "Lakes" in search for images in the collections?
I don’t think I’ve seen that come into Lightroom yet.
Sorry, but I’m no help on this I’m afraid. I’m a PC user and I’m on an iPhone 11. Good luck.
This video was very clear and informative. Thank you.
This quality is amazing. Are you shooting this in 4k?
I don't have the sync option in the drop down menu on the top left. Any idea? I've been searching for an hour now. There doesn't seem to be a lot about syncing lightroom to mobile on the web. I'm pretty new to this and most videos don't break it down from the beginning. Thanks for this video
I should mention everything else of mine matches yours - i am logged in all on all devices and double checked the preferences. Thanks
@@TJ-yk8tq In one of the recent updates, Adobe moved this to a different location. You can now find it over on the right side of the header bar and it uses the cloud icon.

Soooo helpful! Thank you for explaining things simply and well.
Is there a way to import the preset only via desktop without subscription? Because i cant import preset i downloaded after unzipping on my iphone
Great Video and very useful, it would also be nice if Smart Collections could be synced to Lightroom CC.
Agreed! Then I could have my "top images" collection update automatically any time I added a new red or yellow label to an image. That would be sweet.
Thats what I was looking for. Thank u so much!!
Looks like LR CC isn't available anymore in the Photography package so this might need updating. There's LR Classic (9.4) and LR 3.4.
Yeah...Adobe keeps changing the names of their LR apps. Now LR CC is just called LR and LR Classic CC is LR Classic. Other than the names, everything else is the same last I checked.
This was incredibly helpful!
Hi! In my lightroom classic when i touch the down arrow by my name in the top left córner, it does not give me the option to turn on Sync:/
Hi Sean!
I recently bought a external hard drive. I want to edit and import (work) only on my hard drive. Is this possible in lightroom classic?
THE FRUIT HAS SPOKEN
As of the time of recording it was not possible to sync smart collections. But I agree that would be awesome!
@@SeanBagshaw Thank you.
Could I convince you to do a video on your organization system? Colors/ratings/flags/etc?
@@SeanBagshaw Thanks. I'll check the lightroom course.
How about the other way around. Lightroom CC to Lightroom Classic?
Any ideas?
I do have the same problem
@@guillermogiannini LR CC will only allow synching with one catalog, so if you aren't in that catalog, you won't see the option to sync your collection.

i´d like to be able to use only the Lightroom classic and also share from there. So boring i have to use one more software to do all i want
Thank you
Much appreciated, will give it a go

Someone help! I'm trying to sync photos between my main desktop pc and my laptop without having to use an external hard drive. Both light rooms are on the same account and cloud storage is turned on but I don't see the sync button next to the collection. What do I do?
Hey John...Adobe changed the layout of Lr a bit since I produced this video. The Sync feature is now up in the right corner under the little cloud icon.
The video is a little long-winded, but it answered a question I had, so thank you.
Keep being "long-winded" Sean, this was terrific.
IMO it's just right!
As Always, perfectly structured and super useful video from Sean....but the real question....where can I get that Yoda Sweater??
@@SeanBagshaw that thought gives me anxiety 😬
@@SeanBagshaw thank you!
