With "they" do you mean Pioneer og just audio gear manufacturer in general? Because theres several options if you want high quality heavy duty hifi now
I have a SX-980 and I'm very happy with the features it provides. It has plenty of power for most users. The best thing is that you can get it for $400 - $1000 depending on the condition. Not $4K - $5K like the SX-1980.
U should hear how good that pioneer sounds on a set Klipsch khorns.... So badass..it's enough to piss the neighborhood off.. really quick.. especially with pink Floyd ..run like hell..
This receiver had a power draw of 10 amps at idle (1,000 watts). If left on at idle 8 hours per day, it would reflect about $30 per month on your electric bill. So, if you have one, don't use it as your overnight radio. LOL!
I love my SX-1980! Do you ever have problems with the FM tuner and the quartz lock system?? Of all the cool features of this monster, I do not like the Quartz lock.
I have a Sansui G-22,000, I'm thinking of selling to buy a Pioneer Sx-1980, what do you think? I think the sound of the Sansui G-22k is too shrill, I find it very flat, without bass!
@@NovaluxStereophonic Someone on Ebay wants 12,500 for the Sansui G 33000. No way he sells it for that. I have the Sansui AU 9900 integrated amp and the Sansui TU919 tuner which is great. I see a lot of REGRETFUL Sansui sellers. I have a G8700 DB with a ill left side and it still sounds nice. I can only imagine a tune up and better quality speakers. PEACE
Ben Hase thanks for the reply man. You know mine plays amazingly and I do have a local kid/savant that I can rely on. I think there is an outfit out of Dallas that does refurb. Peace
Power supply. Move the 2 hottest transistors OFF the board and over to the heat sink. Google pioneer sx1980 power supply problems. Its the #1 concern for the 1980
The power supply is worth a mention, being as problematic as it is. Not sure the point of title mentioning "resroration" if no mention of work performed, cpas used, areas not done, nothing else is mentioned. Power supply, pioneer 1980 (and many Pioneer integrateds) #1 cause of failure. Yours, is a superb example of the exterior and function, baybe a single word about the interior is warrented.

This is the holy grail of vintage hifi. But I would rather buy the Yamaha amp that retained the vintage look and not think of vintage amp that will break sooner. You have to have a knowledge or a reliable technician to maintain this awesome monster amp.
@@paididoy Yeah, it just depends how much money you're wanting to spend. Yamaha A-S301 on the cheap side, Yamaha A-S3200 no expense spared. Other brands are also doing this trend with the whole "vintage aesthetic/modern technology". Companies like Jbl with the SA750 and Technics with the SU-R1000.
No, rhats why he said he would have to give it some gain. Notice the volume half way up? Thiugh i use a "passive mc stepup transformer" and run my MC right in through standard phono regularly.
I have no idea why people pay more then $800, even in pristine condition, for these vintage (Pioneer,Kenwood,Luxman,Sansui) receivers! especially if not fully serviced and recapped. Guess they are idiots
The market value of vintage receivers takes many factors into account ranging from collectibility, better build quality in comparison to modern components, near infinite serviceability, nostalgia, aesthetics, and many more factors too numerous to document here. Supply and demand also plays a big roll and with more of these ending up in the trash every day the prices should generally increase over time.
@@NovaluxStereophonic Yea I understand all these reasons as I service Vintage equipment myself.....I am commenting on the sellers, in particular, that ask an arm and a leg on Craigslist (with no fees for selling) desirable vintage units that have not been serviced or are not even in working condition. Yamaha has a recent line that share a similar build quality. Mind you, they are rather expensive!

Wow. That is just immaculate
If you hook up a Pioneer SX1980 to a pair of Paradigm Persona 5F speakers, your ears most certainly will be in heaven.

No way in a million years. It's not a class A amp. I would doubt if idle current is much more than half an amp at 120VAC.
