Funniest commentary. Sun Yang takes off with 125 meters to go. They miss this sudden acceleration. He goes into a fast, remarkable, unprecidented sprint over the last 100 and breaks the record. The commentary missed the boat on this!!!

He didn't just cruise. He just rested his legs the whole time. His shoulders were probably on fire for most of the race. His legs were probably fine until the last 50, though.

Exactly. If you see somebody walking over the water you would think he's cheating isn't it ? I have practiced and competed in swimming for years and for me walking over the water and 54" in the last split in 1500 is pretty much the same.

I was kidding, man. Every race, color can swim just fine. Chinese men had never won a swimming gold till yesterday. China got lots of talent. Just not been able to find them all . You will find most swimmers in the Olympics now are from the same area of Hangzhou, near Shanghai. When China finds more talent...only then can it excel. Liu Xiang is one to look for in tracks. US has the advantage of using every race in their teams. China doesn't have that advantage.

I don't understand, when Hackett smashed Kieren Perkins's record by more than 7s did you stand out and say that Hackett must be on drugs? And everyone knows that Hackett used 6 kicks during most time of his race, Sun just used 4 kicks, no need to mention that 2 of the 4 was pretty light kick. That made the difference when the two great swimmer both used 6 kicks during the last 100m, obviously Sun could make it a lot more faster.

I can't convince you against your opinion; I don't know if he is in fact on drugs. However, any real swimmers know that feeling at the end of a race when you reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyyyyy want to get that time or beat the person next to you. If you want it that badly, you'd be surprised what the human body is capable of.

Its Sun Yang, strange stroke that has me questioning his legitimacy, I know he is 6'6", but is breathing, as far as i can tell, is irregular, and his kick as well. I know how distance technique, and he doesn't do it. Maybe its a turning point in distance stroke technique. I resent that you believe that I am rash to come to conclusions, I have given it much thought. I have analysed his stroke, and every time it seems more and more bizarre that he broke Grant Hackett's record.

What an unfair system, and even a discrimination bias. The cameras focus almost exclusively on the first; when in reality all the swimmers are elite athletes, and you are all competing in a final. Beyond which one will be the winner, at least the FINA, and all the diffusion system should change, as if only the winner had trained for years to get there. That's why only Sun Yang swims, and without contempt for him. With luck the camera and very occasionally focuses on the second; everyone does not take them for almost nothing. I repeat perverse system, all Federations should complain. Greetings to everyone, from Argentina.

Good observation. Beautiful technique. Notice - in underwater footage - look at his right leg a fraction after he flicks his left. The right leg just glides - he appears more concerned about tucking it in, not allowing it to drag. He certainly does not kick with it (or at least not much). Hackett does the same thing - look at underwater footage of him elsewhere on RUclips. Wonder if it is the common influence of their common coach Denis Cotterill?

Big, big matchup I look forward to in Rio is between Sun Yang and Mack Horton Aus swimmer at Rio. I don't think the 2 of them have raced at a major competition. Mack is just 20 yo. Swam 10 secs slower than WR at qualifying meet in a race where he was not pushed. Like the wonderful Sun Yang, Horton averages about 28 strokes per 50m. Not as streamlined, but has strong upper body strength.

I am a swimmer, and I know what you are talking about. It's just that I have a hard time believing that Grant Hackett could be beaten in such a fashion. That alloy of determination and adrenaline can work magic (Its made me put up some remarkable splits), but he essentially pulled a 1400 on par with Hackett's record, and then threw in his kick to surge past. That. Is astounding. Whatever the truth is, that race is one of the most remarkable sport competitions of the modern era.

Ad break; the US broadcasters do this when its a long event. So it is the 'complete' coverage of the race as 2 minutes was lost due to adverts. You can probably find the 'missing' 200m somwhere else on RUclips!
