To understand why the group mode works as it did, we need to remember what the missile was designed to counter: An amphibious Russian assault across the Baltic Sea. In an attacking convoy, there would be a main fleet of landing craft spread out in a grid, surrounded by an escort of destroyers screening them. The missile logic will ignore isolated vessels (the destroyers) and instead look for lines of ships within a certain distance from each other (the landing craft), and then divide themselves among the ships "down the line", as it were.
The missiles were programmed by a series of switches that could be set either up or down. The missile logic was extremely sensitive information, and the ground crew (being in large part conscripts) wouldn't know the function of the individual switches, only the sequence each missile would be set to. A very advanced missile for its time, the main weakness of the RB04 was a relatively small production run of only about two missiles per Viggen produced.

Thanks for the vid. And the thing with needing to fly toward the ships "head on" is news. In the ME I set ships in a line but attacked broadside. Every single time both missiles hit the same ship. Frustrating, but this attacking head on thing seems critical for 2 separate hits. DCS should work on that....unless that's how the real weapon simply works, but seems very unlikely.

It's described this way in the manual so I'm assuming that this is correct as per real life.

It is working as it did in real life.
