Best video I’ve seen yet that clearly shows how much of the tuner to cut with the shoot. I’ve watched probably 10 other videos an was still left wondering how much I should cut. Nobody gets a close enough look for us to get a clear look. Thank you so much!
Does it re-sprout in the same place as you took the cutting? I’d imagine not since it seems that you’re just cutting the eye out. Or does it sprout another eye in the same spot?
I'd be interested to see the results of the shoots you have prepared. How long does it take to start growing again? What kind of conditions are best to keep them in while encouraging root growth? At what point are they safe to transplant back to mother earth? Is there any particular season that is best to do this?
Hello! The cuttings are in the ground now growing away. They may not flower this year or they may flower very late in the season, but they will produce tubers which I will dig up and store, and will flower next year. I keep them in the greenhouse while they are in the pots, a little bit damp but not overwatering, and not drying out either. It’s best to take cuttings in March/ April time probably, then you have the likelihood of flowers in the same year.
This is the first time I've seen this method used to increase Dahlia stock. Interesting! Is there any advantage to doing this as opposed to dividing your tuber clump and planting the individual tubers like the single one you showed us earlier in the video? It seems as though it may take longer for your cuttings to root and flower (especially flower the same year) than if you planted individual tubers? I'm loving your videos! They are further fueling my passion for growing beautiful blooms! 🌼 Thank you for sharing!
Hey! Apparently taking cuttings produces a more vibrant colour in the flower that is truer to the original ‘mother plant’ but I can’t actually find anything online to back this up.. I think I caught this bit of info on the tv once.. I think it’s a matter of preference. I can’t always easily spot the ‘eye’ when splitting tubers so I prefer to take cuttings. Just depends on what you find easier to do! I think I will try more splitting next year and see how I get on with that. Hope you have a great season of growing to come 🤩
@@bloomandgray Oh how interesting! Thanks for the reply! I dug my Dahlia tubers yesterday and think I’ll give both methods a go in the spring. Also, I was curious about how you overwinter your tubers and keep them from rotting until it’s time to put them in the ground again?
I don't know what it is but i find dahlias so challenging to grow.I either over water or under water. I tried dahlia propagation this season and had 1 out of 8 cutting grow into a new plant (yay!). I wish I knew why some of the cuttings didn't grow roots. I used rooting hormone and root riot. Idk 🤷♀️
Hi Sarah I have been following u as ref for my back garden flower growing in Berkshire .. Had my son leave to Uni recently and picked up this hobbie to help myself ward off 'empty nest' syndrome.. 😊 Had 2 questions.. What seed sowing cutting compost do u use for good results pls? Also is there a possibility to meet u and see ur farm next time i visit my son who is studying currently at Swansea uni, may be. 😁
I'm in New Zealand and mine are just beginning to sprout. I was planning to take cuttings but I've never done it before. Your video is easy to follow so thank you.
I wish I had watched this video when you made it and known to do this. Now I wonder if it's too late in the year to take a cutting and for it to produce flowers or tubers for me this year. Also, my tubers are completely submerged under ground, so I don't even think I could cut any of the tuber with a cutting. Would it be effective if I don't have part of the tuber?
This is the first time I see this method. I am familiar with the tuber division technique, where you separate the tuber "fingers" while leaving at-least one "eye" (bud) at its tip. Sadly, I was never able to see where that eye is, and I mostly got a tuber that rooted and then shriveled and died.
I started my dahlias too early this year and they are a bit leggy, will cutting work from a 10” stem without the tuber do u think? Want to leave the bottom growth to branch out ..
You could always try removing half the stem. Then do the cutting. It would be just like pinching it out. So it would grow on branched. If that makes sense.
so..I would dig my dahlias (which for me is right now Nov.) and store them until about Feb and then start cuttings? I was always confused because I thought people were digging them and immediately bringing them inside and putting them in a pot and taking cuttings right away..so I DO want a rest/storage period?
Some of my dahlia flowers produce 'sports' - a red one will have a red and white flower, or a pink with a yellowy centre will produce a yellow bloom. I also grow camellias, and the idea is to take a cutting from the stem where the camellia 'sport' appears, and a new camellia may be produced. Can dahlia cuttings be taken from a stem, or only from a shoot from a tuber?
I live in Michigan so zone 6, we usi sally dig out bring our dahlia tubers indoors for winters. if I take the cuttings in May and it starts growing roots , how do I protect this cutting during the winter months?

Thanks Emily! Glad it helped!
so true , very educative.
Wow u just explained it in simple ways its beautiful flower
Wow!!!!😱😍❣️I love it
Thanks for the video.
So helpful thank you 😊
Awesome job can’t wait to do this
Thanks!
Great info 🌱🌱🌱
Great video👍🏻
Wonderful as always. This is an older video, but still relevant and very clear. Thanks again!
Very, very good info and tips. Thanks.
Liked and subscribed. Lovely channel 😊👌💞🌹💐
Really great video, I’ll be taking dahlia cuttings for the first time this year.

Please answer this question. It would be so helpful for your subscribers.:)
I had the same question...did you ever find out?
PLEASE, answer this question p.s. I’ve subscribed 😁
Well mines did
I also found out tuber cuttings root pretty fast in water

This is cool I will try this, so does the roots form a tuber.?
Have you ever tried rooting the offcut leaves just to see if they take?

If I don’t have a green house, grow lights or heating pad. Can I just keep my cuttings near a window? In indirect sunlight ? Keeping the soil moist?
Yes I think that would work!
Don't keep it too wet though, or they might rot off.
You said you do this to increase your stock for this year. Does the tuber produce more shoots after you’ve taken your cuttings?
It does yes!
Hermosas floresme gustan donde las consigo los bulbos
How much water do you add to the tubers when u start this?

After you take the cuttings is that tuber garbage or does it grow back where you took the cutting or .... Thanks
It will grow back another stem from elsewhere
Does it really work???
It is clear the way you take cuttings, but very interested in what happens when the cuttings take root. don't know if they take root.
You will see new growth on the cuttings.
New leaves, stems, etc.
Can you still plant the original tuber as well?
Absolutely!!
Will dahlia cuttings produce tubers? How long before this happens?
Yes they will in the first year 👍🏻 apparently cuttings produce more vibrant flowers too!
Do you divide up the tubers ever ,? It will become huge, no ?

It will grow tubers too same as the tubers you took it from and you just dig it up after first frost and store as usual.
Daliya one cutting peice rate
Will the cuttings ever produce a tuber?
Yes they do within the first year!
@@bloomandgray Wow! Very cool. I will be trying this out in the spring. Thanks so much for the info!
You’re self dahlia
I believe she was speaking English but I'm not really sure.
Get your hearing checked.
Not sure what that accent is. York or Hull or somewhere around there maybe.
