Gives me hope that someone will actually pull off a proper project Linda that Razer showed off forever ago
Pinning this comment to remind future me to do this
@@CarterHurd i literally bought a windows Phone for continuum as it's wayyy better at doing the mobile to desktop thing than anything else I've seen from the likes of samsung and co

That is simply a terrible way of doing it compared to how Razer did it with project Linda
Also dex is really buggy
At first, I was skeptical about the setup with just one wide monitor. But the moment you popped the external monitor on top of the smaller one I was sold. This looks really like a solid build and I could see myself using that if it were a commercially available product.
Shit up and take my money.
Thought the same thing
Kopy
It is a product.
@@anshjain3169 It is not, some laptops get close to it but none have a removable upper monitor and a built in mechanical keyboard, nor does any commercially available laptop have the same retro-cyberpunk vibes and aesthetics to it

I was just thinking something similar!
lmao wtf you mean future tech, future tech there will be just a huge as monitor with a build in PC . no one is using that tiny ass screen
@@jamalsheriff1928 those are already made, but sadly not for purposes of gaming, more for casual/work use. a family member of mine owns one, and it runs 10x slower than my oldest currently owned pc. gonna be a while sadly
@@kanaut oh yea you are right and it will be more commen in the future, but we need really good hardware to achieve that.
@@jamalsheriff1928 i don’t completely believe that actually, i think it’s possible today with the right design and that’s all. people have built desks that are pc cases, so someone can design something with a special 1080p display with just a mid tower pc case, just a bit fatter to accommodate for the screen ofc
This thing looks absolutely sick, I was really digging it with that little wide screen monitor then you popped the second monitor on and I fell in love. Totally love the futuristic/apocalyptic and custom/salvaged look.
Thanks!
@@CarterHurd i'll buy it for 6,000
Feel free to IM or email (see website for address) me an offer. It's super janky though, you'd be buying something with no easily accessible headphone jack (that's located on the display driver board in the back), a thermal-epoxied heat sync, a chassis made of 3D printed parts glued together, poor clearance around the USB A and C ports, and a display that's been double-stick-taped on.... I feel like it's worth more to me than anyone would want to buy it for.
People keep saying they want to buy it, but they want to buy a product like this. not a prototype....

I can't believe that I strongly prefer this over the original laptop. I figured I'd regret this whole thing... but it's more compact on a desk, I have better posture when using it due to the higher display position, the secondary display is useful, and the mechanical keyboard + mouse is much better than the laptop input devices.
Another clever deck
I like the concept as a substitute of an old electric typewriter, it resembles me a bit the Selectric II by IBM, it would be very interesting using the tob screen for writing with an inmersive softwar as IA writer while having the bottom screen for resourcing stuff. I use my iPad for that purpose but unfortunatelly I do not have a mechanicak keyboard paired with it and also don't have a secondary botton screen, so making reseaching while writting it is a pain on the ass. I also though on the dual display zen book... but the keyboard ergonomics seems not very conffortable.
It looks like a lapotop and a typewiter had a lovechild.
I love it!
Wow awesome job 👏

absolutely incredible. The chops to make this and the guts to commit to get it working! Man. Impressive.
Thanks for the links to the displays!
I love the idea of it being a portable modern-day typewriter, but still a formidable desktop PC when at home. I think the form factor would be great for just focusing on writing instead of content consumption
Boot up to a snappy command line and just start editing documents and things, I would love this

Just an addition - some games only really use borderless, even if the settings menu says "fullscreen". It's not a Windows issue - it's a developer choice to phase out exclusive fullscreen.
Explain more in depth. I don't really understand.
@@seggzyantilope6023 could you*
@@jetaddict420 thanks for the correction bro
@@seggzyantilope6023 borderless windowed is essentially just a window with no broders that takes up your entire screen, it usually performs slightly worse than fullscreen but it lets you switch to another monitor without tabbing out like with a normal window, it's especially helpful in games that aren't resource intensive and that don't have mouse camera control
@@aarvlo It's pretty helpful but it can cost you plenty of fps depending on your GPU or APU, RAM etc
I knew the zenbook duo was a actually useful, but seeing someone basically take it and make it into a desktop version is super awesome
How it was useful?
It was overpriced, has poor keyboard and trackpad, performs poor, wasnt really robust....
@@harrison00xXx You're right. It has a lot of faults but it has two displays that is useful. The zenbook duo is practical for people who want dual imtegrated screens and have MONEY TO BURN for comfort but can't make it themselves as they don't know how to and don't bother or find it risky
@@incog2678 Well for the premium of the zen book you basically get a MacBook Air or Pro and a previous gen iPad and have basically 2 AWESOME screens and the iPad one also a good touchscreen.
Where you have to pay even more premium if you wish that you have on both screens, MacBook Pro aswell as iPad a Mini LED screen.

4:20 - There are dedicated apps to forcing gaming programs into windowed borderless, this allows you to transition between monitors at all times.

Can you name some of those apps?
There’s a public project straight up just called “Borderless Gaming”!

@@VarunDaniel I have one called "border_stripper" and its soo good for that
That is a really cool form factor. Nicely done!
Looks like all the risks (potential hardware incompatibility issues, having to cut your ssd, etc) ended up paying off AWESOMELY. This build is the kind of tech tinkering that I dream about being able to complete if only I had better resources on hand. This looks like it took a team of guys tens of thousands of dollars worth of research and design iterations to end up with to show off at CES as a concept computer that would never be intended to release to the public, anyways…. but you made it yourself out of stuff you had on hand! That’s some Tony Stark stuff you did there! The aesthetic choices you made are profound. I love the typewriter shape so much, and once I saw how you gave it a discreet place to fit a second monitor I was blown away. The way it evokes a sheet of paper coming out of a futuristic typewriter and also being removable yet retaining that funky widescreen so as to keep it 100% functional, I honestly can’t get over how much I am obsessed with that it’s such a GENIUS idea, and how the hell hasn’t something like this been available already for people?! There’s always been a section of the market with people waiting in line to buy massively expensive yet utilitarian workstation desktops, or gaming laptops and PC’s directed towards the cutting edge esports crowd. This LOOKS luxury, but you made it at home like it was an experiment and a craft project for you! The big PC companies, and I don’t just mean the specialty manufacturers of cases and components, but HP, Dell, Lenovo and stuff, they all need to consider something like this as a potential brand new product line. We have desktops, laptops, all in ones, all with their own pros and cons, yet I’ve never seen a professional mechanical keyboard included in the first place, let alone as the centerpiece of an all in one gaming PC that also happens to have a perfect place to add a second screen. Tons of people are begging for something portable but powerful, even a little bit modular without seeming complicated and overwhelming novices. You’re a true artist, this should be shown off to the world on display somewhere. You’re reinvented PC’s in a way here by making a professional grade machine infused with approachability and user friendliness with that “it just works” Apple quality to it. It even looks like a direct descendent of the original 1998 bondi blue iMac, and that thing single handedly is responsible for Apple’s resurgence. If it weren’t for that machine there wouldn’t be an iPod, iPhone, etc, it would have set back consumer tech by years. I’m a big fan of cyberdeck projects and DIY stuff, but even the best ones usually come off looking impractical like a cheesy movie prop or like an expensive cosplay accessory, but yours remained first and foremost a computer to be used for long periods of time, to type on without dealing with flat little laptop keys, as well as to play games, or anything else you wanna throw at it. I see too many cyberdecks built into crazy waterproof suitcases or overflowing with chunky toggle switches and stuff, rarely seeming like a potential daily driver pc, but more like an art project that’s handy as a backup PC.
Your 5 minute video of your DIY computer made me write all that. I NEVER write RUclips comments. I only randomly found this video from Reddit, but instantly made me a huge fan and I subscribed and everything. I’m sure I’ll be showing this to people while fawning over it even more. I only wish I had any kind of useful industry connections or some kind of influence to help you in a meaningful way, it truly was revelatory.
Like let’s not forget how you took a wild longshot chance and CUT YOUR STORAGE IN HALF WITH SCISSORS SUCCESSFULLY! What?! That kinda thing would never happen to anyone else, it’s like you’re operating on another level entirely. Can’t wait to see more in the future.

I found you when i was looking for inspiration for a DIY laptop build. I'm thinking about building a low budget DIY laptop using a recycled screen from a broken laptop, an old AMD A8 CPU in an ITX board, and my dad's old "diplomat case" from the 70's. I just found my inspiration. Many thanks, Sista! ;)
This is amazing. Something eye-catching and somewhat portable. The typewriter aesthetic is one of my favorite and having a built-in mechanical keyboard is just the cherry on top. Maybe I'll try to build myself one of these in the future.
Seriously love the aesthetic of this. The functionality looks great too. If that external monitor is a tablet, honestly that is freaking phenomenal.

I've been dreaming of something basically exactly like this for years. This is nuts.
It's really great to see this design tested as a use. I really like the way it can dock a portable display above the built-in one. That looked like a really pleasing arrangement of workspaces. And the fact that it runs Windows (I wish we could escape), is great too, as it makes it that much more compatible.
My goodness I love it !! Awesome mate ! Cheers from Mexico , well done 👍
Youre doing gods work man. Thank you for your contributions
As an Ipad and Traditional Artist who streams, a setup like this would be _ideal_ for maximizing desk space and keeping me sitting up straight. The fact that it's running games tells me it could at least encode 1080, and if there's a network port, it'd be absolutely perfect. You gotta market this.
This really makes me want to build a mechanical keyboard dock for my windows tablet, attaching the second monitor like that looks amazing

Absolutely amazing! Thank you for making us looking at it in a completely different way, why it is so matchy?!
Hi, IQUNIX! Now that this video blew up, a lot of people want to make their own. While I released the CAD files, this is a pretty difficult design to replicate... I have enough interest that I might re-do this concept in a format that is easier for people to duplicate.
Would you be interested in collaborating on a follow up video? I need a keyboard that would be easy for people to disassemble and mount to a 3D printed chassis (it would be a tutorial)... Maybe the [IC] IQUNIX Q66 will be easier to dissemble, if that concept happens?
Either that or I could design around something thinner like the X60, and have the keyboard sit on top of the 3D printed housing instead of requiring keyboard disassembly...
Please email me if you want to start a more formal conversation: carterhurdrobotics@gmail.com
I could actually see the design, even with just the single short ultrawide screen, being completely useful for a "riced" Linux build. Most of those configurations are completely keyboard driven, so that would allow the system to be almost completely portable.
Perfect Vim setup, it's just missing a crusty ThinkPad touchpad as a glorified wrist rest
THIS IS AMAZINGGGG OMGGG I NEVER IMAGINE SOMETHING LIKE THIS AND I LOVE IT!!!!
This is incredible, I can’t even express how much I love it. So cool
This build was basically made for a tiling window Manager, like dwm, I think that you wouldn't need the mouse for that
Without the second screen, it’s actually a super cool successor for the Psion series 5, with finally a decent keyboard :)
omg, psion :)
This is giving me ideas for a similar project, very cool idea man
This is super cool, the slide in monitor is dope. Its like a portable desktop
This is pretty awesome. Somewhat reminiscent of some older computer designs from the 80s and 90s.
I would use this. Lol.
The inconsistencies with moving your mouse between monitors is because of full screen VS borderless windowed mode. Full screen does not allow you to move the mouse out of the game(sometimes it glitches out though). Borderless allows you to move the mouse unless it's locked by the developers of the specific game. Full screen is usually preferred for games because of lower latency.
i love it. great job. Thank you for sharing.

I’m very impressed because we need people to think outside the box in order to find solutions to all kinds of things. Thank you for this video it’s really cool

Super cool! Doesn't look janky at all. Imagine pulling up to a hangout with that, so sick
From a person who owns a Zenbook pr duo . What you told was right . The higher ( more vertical angle ) of the secondary display is the only thing that this Laptop lacks and you had fixed it .Honestly your pc coenpt looks good and it dooable tbh ..
So I really like this build, if it was mine, I would have gone with the 3d printed parts in a non translucent form factor and would have sanded and filled the irregularities, and then painted the exterior black, then dry brushed some gold/copper/silver on with some green, to create a verdigris/textured look of very old metal. I've always wanted to build a "500 years after the collapse, distressed cyberdeck" build. If I could it would actually have a lot of real copper and metal parts. The janky exposed parts look awesome, and I would have gone all in on that look. It should be solid, like it's survived and will continue to survive a while, but also look like it was heavily used. Perhaps I'd even spray bomb that keyboard just masking the keycaps.
I LOVE this shit! So rad. Awesome work man 🎉

@@haratiiaswegobandi746 hilarious.
I've dreamed of a project like this for a while, thanks for doing the thing!
Just a couple suggestions for a second effort:
1. This thing should have a trackball on the right (assuming you're right handed)! Trackballs are awesome at saving space without sacrificing functionality. I'm sure one of those boutique ones built to be compact would do the job perfectly. Just need to make sure the ball stays removable so it can be cleaned. A trackpoint would of course also be a good solution but I think it would be way too hacky to make it work with your keyboard.
2. Would be awesome if the top bracket accepted an eink display to get that digital typewriter goodness for writing.
3. Would be nice to find a protective bag to keep the screen from being scuffed.
This is pretty cool, innovative, and if you happen to produce one day this exact mini computer, I'd buy one in a heartbeat !
i did a similar project (not with good finishing like you did), had a gaming laptop that had faulty keyboard 40pin destroyed and could not fix it (during pendamic) - so i replaced the motheboard and used the damaged one as a gaming PC (attached one type c monitor on top and a smaller size keyboard and mouce... it looks ugly, but it is another gaming PC to my collection. ... Love your work
I could unironically see me using this form factor, if it was actually available and produced on the market. I think it's kinda nice!
yeah well sadly it's not something they actually build these days why cause pay more attention to the dimensions it's way way to think for anything they build these days laptop pc markers sadly are into as thin as possible these days so something like that is not possible anymore even though it would likely sell like crazy
nice but unusable:
- not portable like laptop
- too weak as desktop pc
- upgrade path - highly questionable
-------
- this is valid only as typewriter, who like the esthetics of old fashioned ones...which makes product kinda for a small niche ....
@@s.i.m.c.a Make the screen deatachable, Put it all in a fitting case, and it might not be AS portable as a laptop, but portable non the less. The power of such a device can also be upgraded quite significantly. If high power can be put into a thin af tablet, it can be put into a much thicker keyboard.
The exact example we have in this video is not what a final product of such a concept would look like. This was made as a quick proof of concept for a video. If the big companies tried their hand on their own versions of this loose form factor, the results would obviously be MUCH more refined and usable.

as someone with a zen book duo your design looks more functional and solves many of the issues i have with my duo.
this is fire bro .. keep up the good work on Jah
Not sure someone else has mentioned this but the wide monitor could go very well with Linux i3 gaps, because of the tiling nature, and could be very useful
also keyboard only controls would be easy to set up
RE: The cursor moving between monitors on some games-
I ran into this issue ages ago on my Windows machine running dual/triple displays, I ended up using this software called "Actual Multiple Monitors" to essentially lock the cursor to that display running the game, and it worked fantastically!
I would suggest checking it out as it does have a bunch of useful stuff for dealing with the annoying quirks you sometimes get running multiple displays on Windows, and may have some use-cases for your crazy projects lol
(Not affiliated with the company in anyway just FYI 😆)
Some games have fullscreen borderless mode, that’s another way how it works as well, wished more games could do this
This was really amazing to watch.
That's awesome, well done.
Could be a great keyboard replacement setup where your main monitor is still at the end of your desk. Have a little handy screen closer to your keyboard
Dunno if y'all have seen, but Framework now sells their laptop motherboards as a standalone product, and I've seen at least one other RUclipsr attempt a cyberdeck build with it. We live in truly amazing times
This is so sick. I could definitely use something like that in my living room setup.
Genius, best build I've ever seen period
I would actually use this as a typewriter to focus only on writing! Having a bigger screen just screams "Play, Don't Work" to me.
put the screen at a distance away, and use really big font settings; you can then focus and your eyes will be more comfortable
I'm just a little bit sad this thing isn't running linux, because it would absolutely satisfy my deepest desire to have a retro-futuristic terminal to hack away on lol
Eh, its simple to just replace Windows with Linux on that machine anyway. Its just another laptop after all... ;)
I was thinking Twister OS. I've got a Pi4 replacing the CD player in a Sony boombox. Touchscreen, Twister OS, Android 9 and Retropie. Completely portable runs on 12v drill batteries, wifi hotspot from the phone for internet. On going project but using the hell out of it, 24-7.
