This was the first version of this song I ever heard dacdes ago off the Leadbelly Last Sessions album. It is a pop song written in 1930 by Joe Young and ?Ira Schuster. A couple of popular dance bands recorded it then. It sounds like an old 1890s waltz. Several country acts recorded it before 1942 and some have since then. Both Nat King Cole and the Everly Brothers recorded it. It has become a standard for many New Orleans bands down to the present.
I canna get over this song. I've not heard Leadbelly tackle anything like this before. That voice and guitar work of his certainly prevent it being sweet and syrupy!
@@JoLoneyMusic Thanks for mentioning that. It's rare to find sentimental songs recorded by early county/blues musicians. The way the rough-edged style combines with the melody is haunting. It makes the hurt sound so raw. I've set aside a few of these but am always eager to hear other examples of this "mating" of musics, if you (or anyone else) can suggest any others. A couple of my favorites, (of course not similar, but similarly unique,) are "I Want Someone to Love Me" by Tommy Johnson, and "I'm Not Jealous" by Rabbit Brown, which is a more upbeat tune with heartfelt lyrics.

[Intro] Now I don't know all this but you'll know when I start I'm alone because I love you, I love you with all of my heart I'm alone because I have to be true, I'm sorry I can't say the same thing about you Yesterday the sunshine brought me rain, yesterday your kisses started bringing me pain I'm alone because I love you, I love you with all of my heart [Guitar Solo] I'm alone because I love you, I love you with all of my heart I'm alone because I have to be true, I'm sorry I can't say the same thing about you Yesterday the sunshine brought me rain, yesterday your kisses started bringing me pain I'm alone because I love you, I love you with all of my heart
This is a version done by my late grandfather Walt Heath with his backup band The Pinecones . It's pretty cool to know that my grandfather did the same song that Lead Belly did : ruclips.net/video/r1-pwCyuDAk/видео.html

Try “dancing with tears in my eyes”
He does it in a similar style to this.
Definitely 2 of my favourite Leadbelly songs.
