  • Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair a gaming laptop sent over from Finland by Jari. It stopped working whilst gaming, and never worked since. It is a ACER Aspire 7 - A717-71G-58U3. It doesn't charge or power on.
It is a lovely looking laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 with 6GB GDDR5 VRAM, so hopefully if it can be fixed it will still be a very capable machine.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Not that it affects you too much with this fix but be careful with the voltage ratings of ceramic capacitors (the brown boxes you were measuring and replacing). The capacitance drops hugely with applied voltage on certain types.
When repairing old computers and consoles, I will selectively replace some electrolytic caps with ceramic and have to be very careful about voltage ratings especially on outputs of audio circuits. The most egregious design I saw was in the Sega Game Gear with electrolytic used in series with the LCD having tens of volts DC bias and almost as high signal swing.
Additional fun fact: those two MOS-FETs you were probing in the board were the twin external switching FETs of a synchronous buck (reducing) voltage regulator. Typically, these are used where very high currents are being delivered and reasonably high efficiencies are required. There's no risk with a short on the output of those as the regulating chip will detect the output short and put the part in a failsafe mode to stop excessive current causing damage (which will be why the shorting capacitor didn't burn out).

The pure excitement when that light turned on in your voice is reason enough to try and fix things! Beats any "unboxing" experience. I've never seen a repair video before but have been tinkering with computers for 25 years now. I had no idea those mats existed. The amount of damn screws that I've lost or rolled away, or the amount of times I've stolen tuppaware or plates from the kitchen to store them in! I had no idea how the multi meter helped. I suspect if you give it a detailed visual inspection for burns this type of fix will be gold. I think my hands are too shaky and too many neck issues to attempt something like this myself - but it might make me braver next time something I really like stops working.

You really are a very intuitive fixer of things. The rest of us wouldn't even have thought to look that far, never mind to take the trouble to see if that one miserable capacitor was the problem. Well done! I am enjoying working my way chronologically through your try-to-fix videos, and learning a lot. Mostly learning to have the guts to keep trying. You're not related to Robert the Bruce and his famous spider, are you? Thank you!

I don't know if you are aware but no matter the laptop or computer you can boot into a windows installation media in the uefi/bios but I think your issue was that the USB ports were disabled in the uefi/bios so you couldn't select the USB dvd drive to boot windows from. Great vid vince!

Don't forget, you had +voltage shorted to ground. I doubt it did any DAMAGE to the battery, but it probably tripped the protection circuit. Nice fix though dude. good AND lucky job! xD

You got that awesome beast for 100 Euros, plus postage?!?! You're right, watching another more experienced tech - Mr Rossman, Paul Daniels, NorthRidge, & others - make it look easy, but when you are testing, taking apart, & troubleshooting, it's a lot different! Its self encouraging when you fix something! You may get a pulsing VDC reading in the battery as it may or does charge by a pulse. You got a great deal! Thanks & I subscribed! 🤓

Amazing fix Vince! I was hoping you wasn't going to ignore that flux residue, you were quite right, that would have got real hot at that point.

For what you paid finding just one little cap I would be just as excited!!

@My Mate Vince in the video @22:00 the 3 caps on the right of where you are working are most likely a duplicate of what your working on, so you could tombstone the two big ones to measure them, and find out if your guess about the capacitor size was right.

It amazes me how many repairs you have were it is a ceramic capacitor that is shorted.
