    The Last Voyage of the Demeter
    In Theatres August 11th
    ---
    Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo-fifty unmarked wooden crates-from Carpathia to London.
    Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.
    The film stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.
    The film also features Jon Jon Briones (Ratched, American Horror Story), Stefan Kapicic (Deadpool films, Better Call Saul), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Stranger Things, Bruised) and Javier Botet (It films, Mama).
    From DreamWorks Pictures and the producers of Zodiac and Black Swan, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is directed by Norwegian horror virtuoso André Øvredal (Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, Trollhunter), from a script by Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room), Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) and Zak Olkewicz (the upcoming Bullet Train), based on the chapter “The Captain’s Log” of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
    The film is produced by Brad Fischer and by Oscar®-nominated producer Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer for Phoenix Pictures and is executive produced by Matthew Hirsch.

      This just gave me a great idea and I need to write it here or else I will forget.
      Imagine that our belief in something gives power. Not even belief but just a representation. The more we acknowledge and present an idea the more it grows and forms. And the power of these figures shifts with their popularity. The belief in a general idea not being the same as a specific figure as a figure takes all of the power for itself. But while most of these have faded far from their original grace or simply never had a standalone identity one has stayed every present in the public eye since it’s creation, Dracula. The sole bearer of the undead and being immortal both physically and in our very minds as well.

      @@peterstoric6560 Well said. I would venture to say that at least 51 percent of the population of this world are familiar with the name, or even the concept, of Dracula. It's self-contained. It's about Harker's hellish stay at the Castle and the madness that could assume.
      I love that the Demeter is to be a feature-length picture; it's inspiring. When I heard about it I tripped. My thoughts were, "I'm doing that! But not with the Demeter, but with Harker"

      Not me. As I've said: there was no woman on board, no mention of a Black man (especially in charge of anything) and no one on board knew the name Dracula. There were rumors on board of something killing and dumping the bodies. No survivors with only the captain tied to the wheel clutching a rosary. Greatest horror book ever written with the greatest chase scene at the end. No one, not even Hammer Films, has done the book justice, and this one, will fail as well.

    I read "Dracula" by Bram Stoker for fun one summer while attending college and to this day, will argue it is the BEST horror story ever written. From the creative method that the story is told (through journal entries, logs, newspaper articles, documents) telling a chronological story through different viewpoints of characters, to the fact that the titular antagonist of the story is unapologetically evil, immortal and capable of taking many forms, to the various subtle yet deeper themes of the story.
    All I will say is, I don't know who it was in Hollywood that actually read the original novel in full and finally managed to get this section of the story onto the big screen, but thank you! Looking forward to watching this in theaters.

      @r.a.acosta6528 9 месяцев назад +41

      @patc3650 I wasn't expecting a complete carbon copy retelling on that section of the story, it would kind of be very one sided. Despite the variances, the spirit of despair and fear in the crew from that section seems to be kept intact.
      Dracula is supposed to be unapologetically evil and irredeemable, if anything, seeing him slaughter dogs, women, children, and everyone regardless of race is the kind of unifying cinematic piece I can get behind.

      @patc3650 I'm actually not a fan of woke stuff (especially when its established characters getting race swapped or changing their sex). I just don't think this time in particular is that big of a deal.
      Dracula killed mostly anonymous sailors on the Demeter (if memory serves me correct, none of the crew aside from the captain and maybe three other people are named in the log, and none of them go on to be relevant to the story afterwards, cause spoiler alert, they all die).

I would also enjoy if they were to find out about it right before the climax in someway, raising the stakes for the english on board before the last attempt at killing Dracula. Here it looks like there's a romanian on board that is gonna figure it all out as soon as they get their first clue, and i don't know, it kills the vibe a little bit.

    Edit
    For example, this short story and prequel to Dracula by Bram Stoker, was originally supposed to be a part of the novel. But Stoker cut it out for some reason. It's about when Harker first arrives in Transylvania during Walpurgisnacht and all the weird and creepy things he sees. And ironically, Dracula had to save him by paying off a group of soldiers. Because he knew that Harker would be stupid enough to not believe in the legends or stories.

    This looks a hell of a lot better than Renfield, plus it's actually somewhat sticking to the source material.
    The one gripe I have is that this version of Dracula is that he turned into a giant bat like he was in the Gary oldman film, instead of just an old man going around killing people. BUT, I'm sure I'll still enjoy the movie regardless.
    To be fair, there was the hint that he could take on other shapes, at least in the book (or maybe I'm wrong, I don't remember, it's been a while since I read the book, I'll have to re read it again)

    • @raymondleggs5508

    • @luciamota1249
      @luciamota1249 11 месяцев назад +3

      But iirc in the books is also mentioned that he took other shapes.
      Not talking about the bat and the giant wolf that jump out from the ship but as a creature that crawled over the walls of his castle. Thats how Jonathan Harker described him, no? Well, at least he did not appear old in those descriptions.
      Also when they(the group) went to the Exeter mansion to look for him and they were received or chased by an army of rats it's mentioned a kind of creature, no? Or am I just having bad memories from the movie?
      Anyway, I personally kinda like the depiction of a monster/creature lurking in the dark corners of a ship. Also, I bet at some point we will also see him as a gentleman observing everything in the ship, the captain in the Demeter wrote of a gentleman, no? (I need to reread the book right now hehe).
      Still, there had to be some reason the captain was going totally insane and spoke of horrors(the same happened with the villagers of Transylvania) it couldn't just be an old gentleman kidnapping babies...
