Back when I made my own rods, I made my own hook keepers, either gold or stainless wire, wrapped with thread, then I would soak thread in superglue, and when dry epoxy the thread! Super easy to make, form wire, grind down ends so thread over Lapps good, easy! Latter in life With Casting Rods, I would just drill a hole in the trigger part of the rod, and the hook would go their!
I've tried the zip tie thing, but this looks really cool and as you said, if you have a nice rod, you want something that looks the part. Great job Joe and hopefully the weather gets better soon for you guys.
Thanks Larry! It's a little think that will only be noticed by me, but I'm glad I did it. I am really considering trying to thread wrap one next. Could be fun. Maybe the next rainy day
I have a couple rods that need keepers. I never knew these existed. So much more stylish and they seem pretty solid too. Definitely ordering one of these. Cool video man!👊🏻
Thanks Joe! I found them on Amazon by accident. Glad I did tho. I like it much better than the clamp on or clip on alternatives. And so far, very solid. Definitely recommend 👊🏻
Ive been carving a couple of crankbaits outside ive got to put UV coating on as soon as i can. It can be frustrating if ya mess it up and have to basically sand it off and start over. I like that tape stuff!
Interesting little kit there Joe. Made your rod holder on company time🤔. Atta boy👊 Pretty cool with the UV light. That looks pretty sweet man. Came out real nice. 14:06 😂. Good stuff brother!!!
Nah, thats what lunch breaks are for (wink wink) 🤣 Thanks Chris! I wasn't really planning on doing this as a video, but I felt it came out ok. And I needed some content. Appreciate you as always bro!!
I did not think about that if you were to do it outside you may dry up your epoxy with the UV from the Sun. It's a really great tip that most people probably would overlook including me.
Yeah, I dont know for sure, but I imagine it would play a role in possibly messing up your epoxy coat. Maybe, probably, kind of. LOL. Glad you enjoyed and thanks again for watching! I see you made a sprinkler joke in an another comment, but I cant find the comment. YT stole it.
Good overview and a product I’ll probably pick up. Have some of those keepers located on the handle, below the reel. I prefer them to be above the reel on the rod. Good job Joe!
Hey man! I also prefer them above the reel but on this particular rod, there really isn't a good place for it there, so I had to go under the reel. I also prefer the open style in most cases, but for UL the closed is just fine. Thanks Joe!
Thanks for sharing this. I have a few rods that need a hook keeper on them. Why these rod makers don't add one from the factory is beyond me. Going to Amazon to order a kit now.
I have heard that high end fly rods dont have them. But I agree Why not? This particular rod was $120 when I bought it. No hook keeper? Seems an oversight. I just checked and I think they are out of stock on amazon but keep an eye out. Im sure they'll restock. Great little kit. Thanks for watching!👊🏻
that came out really nice, looks factory done!..after watching this I thought about it and I have been fishing for over 30 years and never once used a hook keeper, Always just put my hook right in one of the eyelets haha,.. great job bro!👍👊
I used to do that too and I remember when I first got series back into fishing a few years ago, someone yelled at me for it. So since then, iv'e used a hook keeper. LOL. Thanks for watching bud! Glad you liked it
That was well done Joe 💯. Thanks for sharing 🤝🏼. Man them stickers you gave me look good on the Old Town 😁 and i got a 3lb largemouth so the fish like them as well 🎉😂. Until the next one brother be safe, and I'll catch up with you later 🍻
Thats awesome to know I'm represented on your fishing vessel! Really, thats pretty cool! I have 2 on my kayak and I haven't had a 3 pounder yet. What gives?! HAHA! Glad you enjoyed it bro! 👊🏻
You made that look easy, all my rods have keepers, well maybe except the purple one but that kit cost more than that rod did so LOL ..Nice demonstration
HAHA! Yeah it's probably not a smart financial decision for the purple rod LOL. It was actually easier than I thought. I caught most of your LIVE. Saw you catch a fish. That was pretty cool!
That turned out really nice! Good looking kit too. I might give that a try. I also have some rattle snake skin I want to add to a rod handle and that UV cured liquid plastic looks like it would be the best thing to cover it with. Is it clear when it cures? Great video Joe! Thanks for sharing.
Dude! Rattlesnake would look AWESOME! Yeah man, so far so good on that stuff drying clear. I want to take it out in the sun a little bit before I say 100% tho. Thanks as always for watching Paul! 👊🏻
I think it would look pretty cool too. I found a video from mudhole custom tackle where they show how to attach it. I think I'll give it a try. I have a few skins and can send a piece your way if you want to try it yourself. I'm not sure how well the skin will fold, so it might have to be cut in envelope-length pieces, but I'm willing to try if you are interested. Might make a cool video.
@@Paul_T82 I can’t tell you how much time I’ve spent on that website considering making a rod. The parts are reasonably priced but the tools needed just to make one, has me hesitant. I appreciate your offer but I’m not sure what rod I’d use it on. One of these days I’ll probably give in and build a rod. The snakeskin option will almost definitely come into play! Thanks again man! That’s nice of you to offer.
No problem. If you ever change your mind just let me know. The skins are from some snakes I killed when I lived in Colorado. Didn't want them going to waste so I dried out the skins and grilled up the meat. Both the drying and grilling turned out surprisingly well, lol. I know how you feel about wanting to make your own rod. It sure looks fun but the start-up cost is up there and I really doubt I'd make more than 1 or 2 rods. If I do get around to trying the snake skin inlay I will email you a picture. I'm pricing out the stuff I'll need now to see where I can get it the cheapest. Be safe with the storms moving in. I hope they miss you.
@Paul_T82 That’s even better that they came from snakes you killed and ate. I’ve had it once before. Little chewy but that may have been on me. I may have overcooked it “to be safe” If I ever pull the trigger on the rod, I’ll definitely let you know. Please send pics if you use it!Fortunately for me, that storm is on the west coast. I’m far south and east of it. Cooled us down a little which has been nice.
Hey bud! Yeah doing good. Just been busy. About to post a video now. I actually got on some fish this weekend. I am almost part of the elite!! Lmao! Hope all is well Paul!
Glad to hear it! Hurricanes are scary we had one reach north louisiana like 3 years ago and it was maybe a Cat 1 when it hit us. I couldn't imagine anything worse than that
I believe it's on backwards, the way your placement is,the hook will rub on the blank, the other way,the hook will be under a bit of tension will stay away and not scratch the blank.
I had to grab the rod and look. I didn’t think of a backwards/forwards way to install it. I can see your point though. I’ve had this rod in a somewhat regular rotation since the video. I actually got one I like a lot more so it’s been on the bench recently. I don’t see any damage/scratches to the blank. But now you got me curious. I’ll keep an eye on it and see pay attention more when I use that keeper. You may be onto something. Thanks man! 👊🏻
I just attach my lures to my guides. Don't unfriend me ✌😂 Great video, though. The camerawork on such a tough close-up shot was really well done, buddy.
Do you hold the spinning reel upside down too? 😕 HAHA! Thanks man! That was a weird one to film. I wasn't all that happy with it, but not like I was going to tear it apart to re-film it. Glad you liked it. Now stop hooking your guides!!! LMAO!
Thanks Russell! For me, it depends on the rod's purpose. For some I prefer the open and for some I prefer closed. Good thinking tho on having both! They dont take up much room and adds that much more functionality to the gear.
This video came at a great time. I just received my new 13 Fishing Omen Panfish Trout UL rod and noticed no hook keeper too. I will definitely buy the rod teck kit. Thanks for the video and your other videos. Have a great day. Kenny.
Glad this video helped you out! It's a beautiful rod, really deserved something nicer than a clip on hook keeper. Strange that it doesn't come with one standard, bit its a great rod all the same. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it! 👊🏻

That's definitely a good upgrade to your rod. And looks very professional to boot. Great job Joe 👍👍
Thanks John! I hate hooking the lure to the guides. This worked out well.
Looks really good, you did an awesome job. Definitely a very helpful video. Thanks again 👊
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching bud!
That’s great, I was wanting to change my keeper on my Lews rod. Thanks teach!! 🔼
Glad I could help Captain! 🔼
Great video Joe, I usually just keep the hook in my hand or the back of my neck. Painful, but seems to work okay.
Hey, it's only dumb if it doesn't work right? HAHA

Great location best keeper style. I gotta have a keeper on all my rods. Never liked hooking lures on reels. Great job results speak for themselves.
