In 2010, I was sitting in a bar in Seattle, watching Canada win the Gold Medal in Vancouver. While there was certainly a bit of somberness in the place at the loss of our American team, I witnessed and participated in something very special. When it came to the singing of the national anthem of Canada - O Canada, every single person in the place stood and sang with as much pride and love for our neighbors, friends, allies and kindred spirits of the people of the North. On that night, there was not a dry eye in that place, for in that moment, the right thing had happened at the right time for the right people....and we were proud to sing in praise of your mighty achievement. God Bless Canada and always know that in good times and bad, we will stand on guard for and with thee.
If you didn't like last Admin. you won't like this, but I watched President Obama's last speech as President (farewell address) in a restaurant in Vancouver that had a TV (White Spot). Patrons watched entire thing, and at end, everyone in restaurant stood up, clapped, and cheered. THIS is the way we are used to being neighbors, not being attacked as "dangerous" or whatever other claptrap someone is spewing.
I remember waiting up for the anthem to play, even though I had to work early the next day. I was at home alone, and I stood at attention when they played it.
i was at Tim Hortons in Vancouver (I am a Vancouverite)watching this and everyone stood including me and my family and everyone was tearing up. everyone was so singing along and it just made me happy. so proud
Canada deserves this! Our men and women fought their asses off to hear this song and win for their country. I'm tired f people complaining tha Canada always wins, itd not their fault no other country shares the same passion and skill for the sport. GO CANADA
I was in a Tim Hortons, ( Canadians unite, ) while this happened and I was only around 5 years old at that time. Even as a child I clapped and cried. I could not be more proud to be Canadian.
Oxygen I gotta say its a close call. I think the only "problem" w/ your national anthem is that it has only had that status for about 30 years? Correct me if I am wrong, but the Maple Leaf Flag and the "Oh, Canada" anthem came about w/ the early 80s constitution? Until then, it was the UK Flag and the UK Anthem?
Adam Saxe before the 1980s we used 2 anthems the maple leaf forever and the British one God save the queen and since our independence in 1867 we always had our own flag we switched to our current one in I believe the 1950s or 1960s not 100%
I never usually like hearing the Canadian anthem because at school when they play it they always switch up the music genre with it but hearing it before sports games or in special moments like this it makes me feel proud
I was born and raised in Buffalo NY, a short Peace Bridge drive to Canada. (Hopefully once I get my passport renewed I can return.)Canada is a beautiful country with incredible places to visit. In fact, I celebrated my 21st birthday at Niagara-on-the-lake.Anyways, I consider myself lucky to have grown up near such a lovely country. We'll stand on guard for thee any day.
Thank You Colleen for the Kind Words! I'm Canadian and Love our American cousins! I am from Edmonton Alberta and a big fan of hockey. I have traveled your great country and met the most welcoming people! God bless you, USA and Canada!
That was sensational! Those guys are truly great. I remember when the Montreal Expos would come to San Francisco in the 60's and 70's...the Giants' PA announcer Jeff Carter would sing both the American and Canadian National Anthems. He did both exceptionally well. The kind of singing The Tenors and Jeff Carter did reflected not only their extraordinary talent but pride in those teams. Great stuff!!
Right back at ya. Whenever someone knocks Canada out, I get behind Team USA and hope that they kick the ass of whoever was responsible for eliminating Team Canada.
I could remember this a bit, I was only in high school, but I remember my Canadian friends were pretty happy. I couldn't think of greater opponents to win. God Bless Canada. With love, from your southern friends in America.
I was born in Detroit, across the river from Windsor, Ontario. Canada has always been more than a neighboring country. My family crossed the border many times as I was growing up. It wasn't until I was in first grade that my teacher told me that Canada was another country.... I was heartbroken. I watched the CBC on Channel 9 and learned their national anthem, "O Canada", from the impressive morning sign-in. My family history shows we have a Canadian lineage. So some Canadian blood runs through my veins. The Maple Leaf Forever.
Nous pouvons remercier Dieu de nous avoir comme voisins. Ceci vaut de l'or en 2024. Que personne salis nos deux pays, nos deux drapeaux. Le tonnerre résonnera !
Watching the replay of this game on television today I’m from the United States I was in California during the 2010 Olympics watching this game on television I felt horrible for Canada yet I was proud of the Canada hockey because half of the professional hockey players I like played on Canada and half where on the United States it was just a classic game.
Sid cried "IGGY!" And Iggy (Jarome Iginla) delivered. Does he, or hardly any other member of Team Canada, appear in this video? Sid is a great player, but it was a team that won, and only by the narrowest of margins. Let us acknowledge the team, and our most worthy opponents.
I'm from the USA I remember watching this game when I was in california I have friends who Live in Canada I had to sing there anthem but Sidney Crosby is one of my favorite professional hockey players.
Beautiful anthem, wonderful sentiment, but, sigh, you couldn't ask for a more apt poster child moment for Greek tragedy personified. Canada Rex -- so heroic and trying to do so much good in the world, yet carrying its own seeds of destruction (though through no fault of anyone but perhaps circumstance). I'll bet a fair amount of Anglo-Canadians who end up reading this to this point will still either be oblivious to what I'm talking about (which is part of the problem/tragedy) or take great offense with a "why do you always have to go there?" comment (which is also part of the problem/tragedy). The great irony is that at almost every moment when you THINK national pride and unity should be at its highest, the ugly, tragic flaw seems more often than not to rear its scaly (or is that maple leafy?), little head, putting a damper on the party. They ought to have just one official version of the anthem with one set of lyrics, part in French, part in English and have everyone just learn how how to sing the one version. Since the anthem was written by a French Canadian and the original lyrics were in French, it should just start with French and end in English.
I know this is an old as shit comment of yours, but I can agree. Moi meme je parle francais et anglais. And back in elementary school they made us stand first then in the morning to listen to Oh, canada. They had one that was english and french. But the second verse was french not the first.
Ô Canada! Terre de nos aïeux Ton front est ceint De fleurons glorieux! Car ton bras sait porter l'épée Il sait porter la croix! Ton histoire est une épopée Des plus brillants exploits God keep our land Glorious and free O"Canada we stand on guard for thee O"Canada we stand on guard for thee
Even as an american I wanna sing with them. I do have relatives from canada and I am 15% french canadian. If we had guys like Yandle, Byfuglien, Okposo instead of Martin, Orpik & Brown and Schnider & Bishop instead of Quick & Howard id say we have a chance. But no. We fuckin have no chance
Everyone has a chance. As the 2006 Olympics and 2013 World Juniors proved, Canada is not invincible by any means. Every country is getting better and it's never going to be an easy medal for any team to win. The strength of Canada is that we know we are good but we don't usually get overconfident or cocky and we treat every team as if they are equals. As Latvia proved, all you gotta do is have one good night and you can do anything.
@vicquial Le Canada a deux langues officielles. Ça veut pas dire que le pays entier est bilingue. La même chose pourrait être dite en Belgique : il y a trois langues officielles, mais tous les Belges sont pas trilingue. ;)
Damn it's frustrating knowing that you are so close to something but it's just out of reach. The Usa is right behind These guys but I mean come on that country breaths the sport people I know from Canada say it's pretty much all they do up there watch hockey. Hopefully sometime soon we can steal one from those guys up north. But Canadiens be proud you undoubtedly the best hockey country, much rather lose the gold to our Canadien neighbors then the Russians or some euro country.
Is the people? Seriously? Is you American? FYI - there are French and English versions of this Anthem, due to there being two languages in Canada, but "Is the people"? You cannot be serious!

Awesome thanks for sharing that. I stand with USA
I stand with both. I hugged countless Americans on the streets of Vancouver that day. No one better to be in a game with.

When you cry at a game with the anthem playing, you might as well BAWL! That right there is the moment amazing moment in sports history.
