  • One of the most infamous moments in the career of legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan's career was his electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. But what was it that really made the audience so upset?

Nicely done, with solid real life connections using Dylan’s experiences to help illustrate some knotty philosophical issues.

Agree though I’d say it’s a bit more complex. Dylan became increasingly disenchanted with two things….1) as you say his music being intrinsically boxed into the protest movement and 2) the protest movement itself as he began to go on the usual political journey people go on during life realising that very left wing politics are not a panacea and not the magical answer to everything and indeed no more of an answer than the extreme right wing (chronicled in his song my back pages but also hinted at in I shall be free on another side). There are many sides to Bob Dylan but musically he didn’t want to be constrained. And he was never massively political in the capital P sense and grew frustrated with those who tried to tack him onto overtly political causes, especially as he was growing up and realising the hypocrisy of those who tried.

He took the punk aesthetics of the Stones to the folk scene, furthering the language of rock.

thats funny because the Stones where heavily influenced by Dylan and he movement and song writing, them and the Beatles. They where trying to make rock versions of Dylans songs and style
