I knew Francisco well in SF. Him, Armando, and I used to have Expressoe at Cafe Triste in North Beach. On time all three of us were playing there on the samer day. Armando was with Cal, Francisco was at El Cid and I was at The Candy Store with The Quanditos. Talk about old times.
Brian Swartz - trumpet, David Urquidi - bari sax, Benn Clatworthy - tenor sax, Jeff Goodkind - piano, Luigi Malespin - bass, Jorge Carbonell - drumset, Francisco Aguabella - congas
Francisco was an inspiration to me growing up - I couldn't believe some of his speedy tasty riffs...his best solo was on Malo's Ascencion album circa 1974 on his song A la Escuela Niño. This band was savoring his seniority at a spot that is now, unfortunately, defunct ... and he takes a really delicious solo on this one. One thing I took from F was his choice in drums ... oversized because of the open tone and always natural rawhide skins...yes they get out of tune all the time but they sound and feel so lovely. Another thing is that most of us feel the African but he embodies it ... tru Afro Cuban conguero. Old school drummers know what I'm talking about...enjoy!!!
Hermano, 2 minutos con 42 segundos en ése solo de congas. Yo quiero que alguien me enseñe un video, un LP, donde un conguero dé una descarga tan prolongada. Y he oído a muchos!!!!
He died just 6 days after my mother passed. my mum loved jazz and I'm sure she would meet Francisco up there. RIP
Lo máximo!!!
