I've played this game over 50 times, and I still love it. One of my favorites. Glad to see that you dug up an older game to review. I agree with your assessment on Innovation. I've played many games where I should have lost but after doing some thinking was able to eek out a victory. There is a bit of luck, but I think skill and "innovative" thinking are very rewarded. I don't feel that this game is nearly as "dark" as other games. That said, I've never bothered trying to get my wife to play it. I've seen the Iello version, which is a bit prettier -- but I actually prefer this version. By the way, I liked your closing story. My take is that when you play this game, you know that even if you play a card that clobbers your opponent, you know they're likely going to get a card that creams you very shortly. So you expect it. In that case the "take that" aspect doesn't feel so rough because you expect to receive pain shortly.
I realize this video pretty old, but you mentioned impulse right at the beginning, have you run through impulse by chance? (I assume not as I couldn't find it) thoughts on impulse in brief?
They are and make the game FAR better. Echos (first expansion) makes for a deeper gameplay experience in general. Figures (second expansion) adds a catch-up mechanism which this game sorely needed to really round out the game. We play it primarily as a 2p game and I really think the more people you add, the worse it gets. It should be right up your alley.

what i love with this game is that when playing 2p, i'm almost always able to jump from era 5 to era 9 in 2/3 turns :)

This game is to random to this length of game. You can be hit hard at the beginning and spend almost 2 hours trying do sth but you cannot.
100% not our experience. 2 hours? How many players were you trying to do it with?
