It's also a real life joke about the actors, not just a joke on the character of Han. Gal Gadot got out of the army at around the same time he was doing Tokyo Drift. That joke had layers.

When you're eating snacks in a serious movie, it's like a badass trait that everything the character is doing which is supposed to be stressful but he takes it in a relaxed approach like "I got this"
I think that is the same effect smoking was supposed to impart on him, like in initial D, when Bunta "just feels like having a smoke" as he casually lights one up while drifting around mount akina.

I really respect him for understanding the position of power he’s in. It’s also very creative and honest of him to keep the character’s past and show him working to change. I think that’s a lot more meaningful and relatable than retconing the character in this case.

Honestly this change was much more memorable anyways… there’s thousands of actors over the decades who were told to smoke and “make it look cool”… but snacking can illicit the same effect for a character who’s chill and does whatever he wants, when he wants. It’s also kind of comedic as well.
