I grew up in bayside Melbourne in the 70s and used to love to watch this ship coming up the bay. It looked like a real ship, not a cruise liner, so I was happy and fascinated too, as it looked like ship travel was disappearing. At 11.09 I can see the Westgate bridge being built in the distance. Nice film. Guess Melbourne was kinda hard to live in for a migrant back then. Shops closing at lunch time on Saturday etc.
Melbourne was great for me. We got a brand new house soon after we arrived and I grew up in Lower Templestowe. Many happy memories. Wouldn't change it for anything. i'd come from a small town in Germany so i don't think the shops closing at lunch time was really an issue.
Great movie :) I see you are a member of our Facebook group, SS Australis Photos n Stories and Chandris Lines. This is one of the best films ever (Y) Looks like 16mm ?? Thanks for sharing it Andi :) The film is a hit at the group. One of the members found the link and shared it :)
Fabulous video Andi: We sailed in the Australis both ways back in the 70's. Had a great time and managed another two way trip on another line which was just not half the fun despite costing us twice the price. Great vid .....thanks for sharing.,
Wolfram: although I'm a "Brit" I think we remember you from Australis back in the 70's. I've seen your vids on here and they are great. I'm pretty sure though that you are the "Wolf" that was near us in one of our voyages. regards mate and if you have more vids, please keep them coming.
How good would that be. I don't think the camera my dad had actually recorded audio. He would've overdubbed all that later (that's what he did for a living at the ABC)
Andi Morton Yeah I know it’s just a thought. I know not every one had cameras that can record audio back then, like how we can record things now but still cool nonetheless to see footage of the Australis. It will forever be a mystery to me not know what the real horns sound like but hopefully my search will continue on.
Wonderful video! Thank you so much for posting it!

Which voyage was this one? I was on the Australis from Melbourne Jan 5 1972 to Rotterdam. Great trip with many incredible memories.
This was 1971, arriving in Melbourne in May from Bremen.
Hi Wolfram, I'm pretty sure I already posted it on that group - probably the only reason it's on youtube at all :-)

1:18 really wish we could be able to hear her authentic horns.
