- In this follow-up video, we share the outcome of our car and caravan crash a few months ago. Our experiences with insurance providers were vastly different: Budget Direct left us frustrated, while CIL went above and beyond our expectations.
We’ll walk you through what happened, how the claims process unfolded, and what we’d recommend for fellow travelers.

I am so sorry for the appalling treatment you received from Budget Direct and the harrowing experience you both have gone through. I applaud your resilience and persistence in getting through this.
Thanks so much, it really was a tough time.
Kudos for calling a spade a spade. Take care and may your further travels be safe and enjoyable.
thanks
Theives in the middle of nowhere, unbelievable.
I have dealt with Budget Direct, never again. Back in 2021 I had a truck run into the back of my car, I was stationary, the car was only 7mths old and was written off. Long story short, it took almost 5mths to get a new car. It took 4mths just for BD to agree it was written off. The bloody car was bent in half, any twit could see it was a write off.
Never again, a nightmare.
@@ozymandias7940 wow. I know, it's ridiculous sometimes
One guess who the thieves were.
@@markandshirley Sorry to hear about your experience. Moral of the story, avoid BD.
@addictiveaussie 100% agree
@@addictiveaussie not sure who you want to be pointing the finger at, but it was thought it was a courier delivery driver for one of the freight companies who had access to the yard. some stuff had gone missing recently. so yeah, probably a bogan aussie from townsville or mt isa.
Thankyou for the warning about Budget Direct will change policy as soon as possible and warn family and friends !
just wanted to share our experiences, ironically a couple of years ago we were with them, had a no fault accident and they were great. we were in sydney tho
No fault crashes trigger a very different response from an insurance company.
Glad you're OK, and hope you have many happy miles ahead.
Found you via Robert Pepper - thanks for sharing so others can learn and benefit from your experience. I've subscribed.
cheers, much appreciated
A company with Budget in it's name should be a warning. Insurance is sold on the cost of premiums and never on the claims side of their business.
the funny thing is that were were with them a few years ago, had a not at fault accident and they were brilliant
They don't like to pay regardless of the policy they are not in the business of paying out money
Thanks for the honest views you have shared. Sorry to hear the problems you had to deal with but at least you have saved this caravanner bothering to get a quote from Budget Direct. CIL may have got a new customer though! Good luck going forward with your travels.
Yeah, it was a pretty rough experience but we came out the other end with a plan to move forward.
CIL are part of suncorp.
There is insufficient laws governing insurance company conduct. I see commenters recommending specific insurance companies because they look after their clients - THEY all should look after their clients!
yeah, i agree. there are a lot of laws around that cover them, thats why their pds are so long and convaluted
There was a big inquiry into the banks and there needs an inquiry into the insurance companies.
@tallboy49 good idea
Budget for a reason: You pay less but don't expect good service when in need. Lesson learnt: No need to go as cheap as Budget, nor should we go and pay Toyota tax. Essence of this video!
Yep, we are thinking along the same lines, we learnt a lot from this.
Insurance company's are about making money to pay ceo's bonuses not helping client's

thats the world of insurance these days, they flex their muscles when they can
I've been involved with insurance companies for a very long time, service was better 20 to 30 years ago.
Keep away from the small insurers, better to stick with the major brands which have been around for a long time as it's likely you will have better service.
@stephenmansueto7668 good point
Years ago I had a major accident just out of Deepwater in northern NSW and I was with Suncorp. Suncorp paid for me to be picked up and driven home to Redcliffe Queensland, from Glen Innes they then got my Hilux back to Brisbane to be repaired and returned to me. @stevescherer6704 thanks for comment.
The trouble is you pay premiums for years and don’t know until it happens what they will do. I went with some specialist 4wd insurance company in the hope that paying a bit more will protect me but I can’t know for sure. Sorry to hear this I hope the thieves get the karma they deserve.
thanks, that's why I made the video, to spread the word
Wow, what a harrowing experience for the two of you. Glad you walked away from it, you were a long way from medical help out there. I used to be the station manager of the Norseman ambulance and saw several caravan accidents both east and north of the place, and not all of them were the fault of the caravan towing vehicle or its driver. Thanks for the head up on the insurance rogues. Happy and safe travels.
@@johnstaring3210 yup, we were so lucky no one was hurt. The emergency services were frustrated with the bad roads in the area, too many not at fault accidents

Only insurance company I would consider is club 4x4 for both car and caravan, full offroad cover with up to 15 thousand dollars recover. Glad you guys are ok tho, vehicles are replicable you arent
I think we are with 4x4 too
@markandshirley we were out in the middle of nowhere on the wa coast about 4 hours offroad on the beach from Denham and got stuck ofcours my fault leaving maxtraxt by accident back in town leason learnt. I stopped to avoid another car who was an absolute idiot and that was it just sank in soft sand. Dodge ram couldn't get me out but they had sat phone, called club 4x4 and they sent out offroad recovery immediately especially knowing we had a 1yo and 3yo in the car. Asked if we had supplies and if they need to organise emergency services to air drop supplies if it was life and death situation with kids in the car and being so hot. After we got back in town had a follow up call to see of there was anything else we needed and if the car was OK.
Budget direct are USELESS! I used to have 4 cars insured with them and long story short, they are a bunch of LIARS! I would NEVER insure anything with them ever again!!!
you and us both brother
Agree 100%
How hard can it be for the insurance person to Google 'Julia Creek' while talking to the customer. They might then get a better idea of the distances involved. I used to live in a town that was about 180 kilometres (110 miles) from Sydney, Australia. An insurance person thought that was a suburb of Sydney. They were based in Perth.
lol. sounds similar
I guess the first consideration is that you are both OK.
Says a lot for having a decent vehicle like a landcruiser and when this happens, it is money well spent when you need to protect your life.
I have owned landcruisers and caravans and tend to insure with the likes of RACV being in Victoria at that time as they also have extra cover options for emergency assistance and accommodation as well.
At least they will get you back to a main city and out of remote places.
Keep travelling and safe journeys in the future.

@russellm4286 thanks. Good points
Hope you and yours are doing ok mate, talking about it to all and sundry is a good thing. BD sound like a typical Insurance Company. There is a public register of insurance company claims payout ratios.
This figure is just as important as price ranking.

we had the same distance challenges last year when our car and van were written off .. "Just grab a taxi .. " It was 700Km to home "Theres nowhere 700km away" I was told. Awful. I feel for you as our expereince was similar. Same company for car and van but Van business in Aus paid in 2 week. Car .. 3 months .. We were traumatised (and still feel it) and got NOTHING useful ... "have a nice day" we were told ... trapped for 5 days with no help.
We had all the bolt ons on our car stolen too. Sat in a yard for 2 months with no Assessor assigned. Initially told it would be 7 months before it could be repaired. All the same pain.
@peterkbeck1964 wow, makes us feel very lucky then. Feel your pain.
I will never use Budget Insurance again. I have a similar story, different circumstances but an unbelievable tale of avoidance on the part of the insurance company in an accident on my car whilst it was parked. When there was no doubt as to who was to blame. I tell everyone I speak to.

@msblack2424 bd were fine for us a few years ago when we had an ma no fault accident in Sydney, but it wasn't an inconvenience to us at the time. This was difficult due to the location and that's why I think they need to recognise what needs to be done for individual situations

Hi Mark
Your video just popped up on my YT
Normally I do not watch such videos but your accident video interested me.
I could not figure out what was the reason for it and the drivers counteraction to control the tail swing.
Yes, I have also a one axle van behind a Landcruiser and I know what is a tailswing by experience.
For my understanding it is a easy to control it in an instand, less 2 sec. Or 2 swings befor it gets out of control or even the antisway system kicks in.
May there are a number of different actions, but my best way todo is:
Towpro break controller installed in the car.
Set to Automatik on the road. (Set to manual on dirt roads an WDing)
In Automatik mode turn the knob up to 10 highest setting
Test drive every time start driving if the van break function accurately. (My way of checking)
When you experience a tail swing or wiggle you call it, hit the tow pro button in an instand to activate the van breaks with all force they got. Release the button, re-apply if necessary your butt is the sensor for it to make that decision!
This should straighten the rig and neutralize tail swing.
Not sure what electric trailer brake system you have installed, but in my opinion all system should have a button for manual override.
PS.
Yes maybe I have old experience from truck driving in Sweden where in former time the manual trailer brake lever under the steering wheel was a live saver going down ice roads with a fully loaded trailer is pushing the prime mover. Schock-Hit the trailer bracketing straighten the rig. It worked for many of the truck driver as live safer. Now with ABS not sure…
The best testing strip in my opinion is the little hill into Adelaide or out of Adelaide 10 km downhill with little gradience.
Drive downhill, accelerate go of the trottle and let the van push you car. If it starts a tailswing hit to tow pro button for 1-2 seconds and streighten the rig.
By all means this is my way and experience to get out off such a situation and for sure I am not an instructor nor driving trainer but with decades of experience driving all sort of vehicles except road trains in Australia which are a much different ball game.
Good luck and safe drive with your new rig D Max and single axle van.
Cheers
Thanks for sharing your experience. We've learned a lot from this accident, and we're definitely taking steps to prevent it from happening again.
100% spot on in what to do. Thank you.

Watch the Bernoulli Effect where two slab sided vehicles pass one another...
even going in the same direction.
The build up of air pressure between the two slab sides creates a pressure...as the lighter vehicle draws ahead the tail of the lighter vehicle gets flicked by leaving the pressure zone.
You have 3 seconds before you crash...unless, as above, you have a manual big red button to slam on the trailer brakes..as above...to pull the rig straight.
You can't accelerate out of it..and the more you accelerate the more energy goes into the crash.
Brake ONLY the van....
I left Budget a couple of years ago when they declined a hail damage claim. They stated that only a third of the dents were caused by the hail storm. I actually had a video of the incident. Never again will Insure with them. They are are complete scammers. I had 2 cars and a house insured with them.
Another friend with a 4x4 insured with the same insurance company also had a nightmare with a claim.. took the better part of 12 months for the claim to be resolved . In this case the incident was caused by a mechanical failure in a near new 4x4

@93jummy in julia Creek? We salvaged what personal stuff we could, what we couldn't take we left under cover where some of the more valuable things for taken in the first few weeks. We think it was one of the delivery drivers who were the only ones who had access to the yard. You must have seen it after we came back and took everything else.

@ I hope so too
Sorry to hear about your crash. One thing that more people could be doing but don't, is have 2 or more vehicles. There are a lot of good utes from about 2015 to 2020 with medium Ks for around 20k. Spend 30k + and you can get your 4x4 dual cab main car. Nothing wrong with a 2016 single cab with 2wd with a tow bar, break controler and 1k kings roof top tent parked on a safe street in north shore if things go wrong. Could be around 60k easy for both or much less. Even a 2010 dmax or colorado with the 3.0l as a spare. People always want the 80k + Rangers or Landcruisers when for 80k you could do 3 vehicles or 2 for 60k. Another lifesaver are box trailers. Have one parked on the street with a cage and big tool box. Cost around 5k. Enclose the top with a cage section. Great for storage.
@Dan-rg7jj good ideas. We are travelling full time now so one good setup is what we need
Hi Guys, I can feel your pain from the time of the incident to every day events, far to long to get responces. Go Club 4 X 4.
i think thats their standard practice to soften you up before going lowball
I took out a policy with a similar company (allegedly cheaper than the mainstream) for my wife going overseas. She had her mobile stolen from a counter top and I submitted a claim together with an English translation as requested and then they denied the claim as my wife did not have the phone in her possession when it was stolen. Down one phone and the cost of the policy.
Sounds familiar, that's a good lesson learned, sorry that it cost you.
It was "theoretically"...within her control...until it was taken from her "control" by a thief.
Was she supposed to have it connected by a steel cable to her wrist at all times?
That's like saying you have comprehensive car insurance covering all eventualities...
except if you park it, lock it..... and walk away to do your shopping in the Mall!!!!!
G'day Mark & Shirley , you both have certainly had a rough time, as we age these events tend to stress one even more. We had a claim after we clipped a roo, not a real lot of damage, bullbar damaged small bonnet dent. We were insured with RACQ they were so helpful,a with a painless experience. I guess one's insurance is only as good as one's first claim they all take your money as you found out. I think there would have been more u could have said ....being diplomatic & eggshells😅

I think that’s awsome compared to nrma took us 3 months to get the repair done only to get the car back to find the car more damaged then when we started. Then to be gas light and abused and manipulated by the nrma easers was insulting. All work undertaken had to be completely redone from poor workman ship and there is still damage to our car done from the first repair to this day that cannot be fixed. I was without a car for 6 months and they tried to blame me for being abused by nrma and their repair when I was nothing but professional. I think most are scammers and very few are genuine insurance companies.
we were very lucky for the short time frame, but it felt longer and the stress of being stuck a long way from home made it worse

Why would you use budget direct for insurance on a LandCruiser and a 150k van why pay the extra NRMA are brilliant
well, it was a budget landcruiser and the van was around $60k. the van was insured with another company
You start off by saying the insurance companies were great
I was wondering who was at fault for the accident, did you have the weight in the camper wrong , did you swerve, blow out ??
I m not sure how old your land cruiser was but and what cover you had , example. if you had it insured for $80000 and they paid out $80000 less excess then that's
ok if you spend $120000 insurance company's fault you spent more
Everything depreciates
Same with camper van
If you have an agreed value that's different
As for leaving your gear unattended
You are relying on people being honest. Locks are to keep honest people out.
Probably should of hired a truck to pick it all up in the first place before the vultures got to it
You are very lucky you got to complain instead of being dead or badly injured or ending up in a wheel chair
Sorry for your accident , but insurance companies are loss adjusters the trick is to have enough cover and the correct cover.
this is just our experience, i am sure you will do something different if ever in a similar scenario.
vehicles were both underweight, the road induced a swerve and in this case we were unable to correct it. bad luck , good luck, this is just the way it played out.

Budget Direct are cheap for a reason! Personally, I would NEVER consider insurance with them, and that's before watching this video. All those "awards" they keep spruiking about are simply because they are cheap and it's easy to get insurance with them; ease of claims is not considered. I think they are a bunch of cowboys.
@TheDarkSnaffle i agree up to a point, after all they did pay us out after 5 weeks of mucking around
Whats with the multiple camera angles on you talking lol

Why the bloody music??
thats how i like to make my videos, if it was too ott then i apologise
I was with bugetdirect of my car,i locked my key in it ,rang bugetdirect for help thay said if we help you we will SMACH THE CAR WINDOW TO GET IN…I SAID wtf.true story….
ha, when the help hurts more than the problem
Caravan?? No idea. If the new one is better great. Replacing a Toyota though with a D Max is a big step backwards. Though IF the vehicle was underinsured that is your issue not theirs. The more KM you do the more you will realise this. Isuzu make a decent car for the price, Toyota make a better on for more price
@@ldnwholesale8552 never said the car was underinsured. But starting over often costs more. My dmax was 50k, but the top spec ones go for over 90k. Same motor and drive train. The 76 series still needed more spent on it to get it up to where the dmax is on some things
Just gows to show that you try to save a few $s them when do ( not if) do go wrong then you have a winge about it.
Lesson learnt dont go el cheapo next time
year, thanks bud, if only you had warned us prior
Let’s be honest u went with the cheapest insurance u could find because your a tight arse and then complain when they don’t pay out at your command. They did pay u out in x weeks which is not unreasonable considering u were in the middle of nowhere. Things take time to process and u just expected everyone to jump for u so it didn’t inconvenience your trip. Have some patience next time u are not the only person in the world and don’t be such a tight arse next time.
@TerryCole-rg4wu thanks for the constructive comment
sounds like the the weight distribution in the caravan was incorrect. Lucky to get insurance payout. I'd be careful you are not sued by the insurance company for defamation.
it was all weighed professionally before we left sydney, weights were all well within limits. no deamation if you are sticking with the agreed facts
@@markandshirley the accident did not happen in Sydney when it was weighed and from your account of the caravan getting the wiggles prior to the accident points to weight distribution inside the caravan. I see it all the time in the outback. I'm a truck driver..
@@rodneyflying9124 funnily enough i'm a truck driver too. the car and van had done over 15k km without an issue, our accident was a combination of events that led up to it. the following week two road trains had an accident on the same road, i didn't go talking about how truck drivers doing the wrong thing
@@markandshirley nows your chance to say what those truck drivers were doing wrong
@@rodneyflying9124 just like you don't know what went wrong with out situation, i don't know what went wrong with theirs. that road is known for a lot of accidents, cars, vans and trucks on a sadly regular basis, the local councils don't have enough money to maintain them to a decent standard.
unlistenable! Speaking as a musician who can't not listen to sound, nah.
@@alfalf25 sorry
My only question would be, if you were dumb enough to replace the caravan with another single axle caravan, so that it too can be the tail wagging the dog & cause the same outcome a second time? 🤷♂️
good points, but this time us dumbarses fitted anti sway to the caravan
Bus goes from mt isa to Townsville daily and train 2 times a week , you must have not looked too hard for accommodation in Townsville
You seem very hard to deal with, every person who tows a van in the outback would have a contiguity plan and the policy to cover all of the concerns you have raised , you are in the outback , what do you expect . Get over it
@tyzon00800 thanks for the reality check, will try to do better next time
What happened stop blabbing on !
sorry bud, had a lot of detail to cover, also, 😀i blab on
Yeah she's cactus mate. I've been using AAMI for many years and 2 years ago I crashed my LandCruiser into a building...
They were very helpful and even though my car was written off at the end of the day I was able to recover well from the situation.
