Heart of Darkness is a 1998 cinematic action-adventure platformer developed by Amazing Studio and supervised by Eric Chahi, better known as the creator of Another World (AKA: Out of This World) (tasvideos.org/188G).
The game follows Andy as he is traveling through another world called the Darkland to rescue his dog, Whisky. Players progress through the game's linear storyline by navigating various environments and solving puzzles, all whilst attempting to keep Andy from being killed by evil shadows, hungry wildlife, and perilous obstacles.
Along with basic movement, such as running, jumping, and climbing, certain sections of the game give Andy additional abilities. The plasma cannon allows Andy to shoot lightning at shadows in order to disintegrate them. The Special Powers, which can be used offensively against enemies, can also be used to grow and destroy trees born from seeds.
Veteran TASer lapogne36 (tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/l...) runs through this difficult game, often with many close brushes with deadly enemies, in order to beat it in just over 25 minutes.

Reminder: this game has some pretty gruesome death scenes... and was rated E.

    HEART OF DARKNESS! YES!
I must have dropped a couple of hundred bucks on this game back in the day renting it from a local mom n pop video store. It always surprised me just how violent the deaths were in this game.

step 1 : Make a game with cute visuals starring a boy and his dog on the cover.
step 2 : make it E rated somehow. Now 80% of your sales will be from parent who bought it for their 7 years old.
step 3 : make it so fucking HARD that no child can reasonably survive even the 2nd level
step 4 : Power your experimental reactor with their tears and become the world overlord

I played it when I was 12, and could finish it on normal. And it did not traumatize me. THAT much.

I've never heard of this game before. It looks sort of like out of this world (gameplay wise) which is pretty cool!

@@KopperNeoman Geez, no need to be aggressive over a 2 year old comment.
TAS tools for PC already exist albeit flimsy and usually requires Linux with Wine and hourglass.
There is a PC version of hourglass but I've heard mixed results from it.
Really the biggest time save is on the loading screens alone, we're not missing out on any big strategies here.
