    I recently installed two new 8ft gates on new posts. I think I over engineered the setting out! I had memory sticks for post width as well as location of holes in posts. But my gates were iroko and pretty heavy, so saved a lot of handling. Good job on yours and made me think about different ways to tackle a job.

    Hi Tim, nice job on the gates. Just a word of caution about the field latch idea - you'll have it all perfectly lined up and then get a very wet or dry spell and find it not working because of how much the gates will swell and contract....speaking from experience!

    Round gate posts allow a greater opening angle

      @dougal8812 Год назад +1

      And then you can use a post rammer as well. Also meaning you don't need concrete which you should always avoid if you have the chance. I hang 12 foot metal gates off 8+ foot 6 inch rounds with no concrete and they work perfectly well with no sagging

    You should put the crooks on the face facing in or out of the opening. It looks better and will also allow the gate to fully swing through 180 degrees if the ground level allows. You can also latch it fully open to the fence nice and tidy.

    I think you might be right about getting the pins through the uprights on the far side of the post away from the chalet as a good way to fit them. If there aren't going to be too many situations where you'll need the gates open more broadly than the passageway between them, it probably won' t bother you. If it does happen, the hinges will mark the posts where the chamfer is going to help with the wider opening. You'll know where to take some wood off the posts. Really good video - good luck with the next.

    14:55 whenever I offer a level up I always have to say what the old boy I used to work for on fencing would always say "a blind man would like to see it". Sadly he is no longer with us, he was a brilliant fencer.

    Hi what size diameter auger drill bit do you need to through the post for the thread :)

    Hanging those gates are a lot harder than they look I did some last year .I cheated getting them level by adding a few washers to one of the pins to get them level lol 👍👍

    What size holes did you drill in the posts?..Nice project.

  • @elanman608

    If you arrange the bottom pin about an inch nearer the post than the top pin with the bottom hinge correspondingly longer the far end of the gate will rise up when opened and the gate will swing shut on its own.

    Flat battery? Get yourself a NOCO boost plus battery pack. GB40 You will rarely us jump leads again. Starts my 2.3 litre Diesel Van and anything up to 3 litre (apparently)

    it looks a little weird but if you drill your hinges diagonally corner to corner through the post it allows them to open completely without having a big gap. i guess you could also just set the posts at a 45 degree angle inwards aswell but them might look even weirder.

    Did you add extra protection to the wood of the gate posts that will be below ground? The concrete will suck water from the subsoil and then it soaks into the wood with risk the post bottoms rotting out.

    When using square posts put them in on the diamond then they can swing both directions without binding.

    Hi guys, get yourself a topdon booster pack, much easier when jump starting vehicles.

  • @anneleykay9437
    @anneleykay9437 Год назад

    You may already be doing this but something to retain the open gate leaves might be a good idea so the wind doesn’t slam the gate into your vehicle as passing through. Also the farmer next to me swears that the treatment on the pressure treated wood is not what it once was (creosote) so they rot quicker at the bottom even though the rest of the wood is solid. Just might have to treat them yourself.

      The farmer’s right. New chemicals are safer, but not as effective. I’ve heard tar is a good solution (though not feasible here).

    Top tip. Put the top pin upside down stops livestock or thieves lifting them off!

    • @TheRestorationCouple

      We have needed to lift gates on and off for various reasons so find that just putting a open through the gate pin is fine. (especially needed for the pigs). I'd flip them for road or driveway gates though. 👍

      So that means that the gate is not supported by the top hinge?

  • @gavin6538
    @gavin6538 Год назад

    I you router the post to make way for the hinge it will repeat whet you have on the posts outsied the shop building younwere showing us. you can then say it was all part of your original design.

    How much are those gates going to swell up in a really wet winter? I wonder if Tim has left a big enough gap in the middle?

    A good trick for getting self closing gates is to set the post back half a bubble. Works great, but not o double gates. Not a fan of concreting in gate posts.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  Год назад

      Yeah always handy to let them self close so they can’t be let open by accident. All our posts are knocked in straight but knowing our soil and seeing the concreted posts I’ve pulled out I’m sure these will last just fine. They would have knocked in with tractor but would have needed to re shape the tops. 🙄

    Regarding gate furniture - do you not have Moles Country Stores nearby? Their galvanised hinges etc are excellent.

  • @davidbanner9001

    A nice set of metal gates would have been nice. May be just the rest of the posts in wood? OK cheeky comment. How did farmer for centuries hang gates and stop cattle passing without a laser and spirit level? I'm only taking the pee. I really like your videos and appreciate all the hard work.

    • @TheRestorationCouple

      Maybe some estate gates and railings one day but about 5 times the price. 😂 not sure I would be half as fussy with the field gates but these are going to be on view a lot more and needed to meet level in the middle. 👍

    Why don’t you add an electric opener to the left gate like you added to the main gates?

  • @adelaideinvigilation5230

    Why not chamfer all sides of both posts and make it a feature even if you have to paint might solve the problem

    You said the posts are solid in the ground but every time you hit the pin they moved a fair bit
    Let’s hope you have not cracked the concrete
    After all concrete takes weeks to get to full strength not 24 hrs
    Time will tell

    Nice job.
