I honestly don't have bad experiences using guns. The only time I've had an issue was in Louisville but that was about it. And yes, I use normal zombie settings. So maybe my game is bugged but it doesn't attract many zombies unless I'm in seeing distance of a horde.
So the sound varies based on calibur and weapon class, handguns for example are around the same as shouting and so if you have ammo and aim can actually be a good choice for efficiency. Rifles are gonna pull in something like another 50 wider radius meaning like 100 percent more and shotguns are gonna pull like 100 wider than handguns reaching some 300 percent more zomboids. Spawns and hords form randomly and move about so i've had situations where one half of a town was nearly empty after two m9 mags whilst the other side of town made me rethink my life choices. Also bear in mind buildings do not populate until getting close \ looking in a window. So maximum safety in gun aggro \ clearing is to roll up stay well away from buildings and start with smaller guns scaling up as the zomboids tapper off, then peak into buildings and pop of some more. Essentially keeping start with handgun and go bigger as you get less customers showing up as a policy will make gun usage consistently more manageable. I'm going to assume that Louisville is the great grand daddy of all hotspots in the game and shooting a gun will attract hundreds upon thousands of of those little rascals
