After years of listening to the classic funk and groove jazz of the era and even playing some bass and keys, I can tell you that Tokyo Groove Jyoshi settles down into the groove with solid percussion and then plays some sublime riffs over that. Every performer hits exactly the right vibe in the mix to create a sound that is so clean, funky and good that you never want it to end.
most music in this genre seems so corny and banal to me, pointless virtuosity, look what i can do...zzzzz. Her name is Harumo Imai, and i don't know what it is about her playing but it is always just so solid, i can't get enough of it. Respect!
This is an incredible group. Harumo plays an unbelievable sax; has great jazz instincts. The keyboardist keeps the whole thing together and shines on solo. The drummer is an Energizer Bunny and crushes it like a machine and I love her voice on other tracks. Great to see Juno back. She definitely did not find better in the U.S. and now she knows it. Meanwhile she has an awesome new bass colleague to push her on the creative side. This group would be crazy to split up. Keep the faith. If you tour, tour together. Keep building your repertoire. I’m a total fan. Your Funk is morphing into jazz fusion. So good.
I agree to all that! I was waiting for Juna to realize that this group complements her so much more than what she was doing in the states. I also dig Mimi's vocals; she seems so happy to belt it out. She also can lay the rhythm down like nobody's business. Incredible drummer. All fantastic musicians in their own right.
IMO, this is their best group, play together so well. Each are great in their own right and I too hope they CAN play together because their collective sound is soon EPIC
Landed here by accident and was triggered by "twin base". Thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially the two basses. The whole band is fantastic. These gals know their business.
@@naturalpro2003 I studied some jazz, and I can play it okay. I learned the standards and I did all that fake book shit. Some of them think that anything outside of the standards isn't jazz, but I disagree. There are many different types of jazz. This is Funk Jazz. My genre is modern beatnik jazz.
TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI: Nice to hear Rina playing out more. Juna is of course a big talent, but I think she now sees that Tokyo Groove is a very cool and unique group, and maybe wishes she never slipped away in the first place. Her self-produced single: "Funk You." was very well done. Harumo plays with great confidence and gets a terrific cutting tone, much like Sonny Rollins. If she would get the group to do "I'm Old Fashion," and get into an extended solo like Sonny that would be very entertaining. And, put a funk groove to the tune. Mimi and Emi are solid players and they can tackle anything. The whole package cooks. One of their other videos, "What a Difference a Day Makes" is a very well executed R&B cover, and they all look so happy to be playing it. I hope they stick together, as they keep getting better and better. I'm a big fan! Neutron Daz
Oh yeah....this is the group....no need to go further than where you are Juna. The magic is so totally there in this package. Far as horn players go Harumo has the tone and the control. One of the best tenor players anywhere. Just everything cooks...twin basses, keys, drums....so well executed. Bravo and keep on posting and playing together. Many blessings on you all.

With her talent and cool personality, Juna manages to pull together great musicians and create great moments. This is one of them. 2 basses? Why not? What a cool cover of this supremely classic jazz tune!
These ladies are a super group!! Mimi, Emi, Juna are actually studio musicians. There is so much talent in this group, I don’t see how one room can contain it!!
This band is incredible… the sax player is an absolute MONSTER.. I’m a bass player and the drummer and bassist got it DOWN…and keyboardist..definitely has the skills…
Absolutely ! I remember back in the 70's & early 80's before the sad corporate takeover of Radio, Urban Radio Stations had the balls to play their music late at nite or on the weekends...thats what exposed me to some great jazz fusion
Just stumbled on this on RUclips. I'm surprised I've never heard of them but they, as a fellow bass player is just inspiring. These Ladies are excellent!!!
Incredibly tight and yet loose at the same time... The 2 basses are complimentary - their styles don't clash at all :-) Being a bass player, I must say that Juna's chops just blow me away - RIna is very good, but Juna just seems to own her axe in a way that all musicians want to! I just found them tonight, but now I have to hear a lot more!!! Keep it up, ladies, You are so kicking ass!!!! :-)
I love how Juna was grooving so much to Rina's solo. The chemistry of these musicians is on another level. I hope to see them perform in person one day. FLAT OUT AWESOME GROUP!!

I just so happened on your channel, as a fellow American musician living in Shenzhen, China. I really enjoy your grove, I could not help keeping myself from saying "that was sick" when you guys hit new cords in a song to change its feel but it worked. Your solos were on point too! You have a new sub! I love good music no matter the genre, I play trumpet myself but always loved base notes.
Totally electrifying performances by all..the group is so together and superbly tight..this feels like so much more than just jazz, I could feel intermittent elements of blues, rock, fusion plus, comfortably and effortlessly delivered..a great moment captured live..
Very interesting how they use the dynamic range. Great sax, keys and the two different approaches on the basses. The drummer kept it all together and delivered a solid and constant beat. Great band, big surprise,
Emi rocks the keyboard.
