Never gets enough credit? It's probably their most famous song in terms of mainstream popularity and radio play. At least in the top 3 along with Rock The Casbah and Should I Stay Or Should I Go. It only started life as a hidden track because the album sleeves had already been printed when it was added to the album, it wasn't because they wished it to hide it away... they released it as a single after all.
Joe strummer and mick jones reminds me of paul mccartney and john lennon Joe Strummer = john lennon because of political and protest songs, the activist one Mick jones = Paul McCartney 'cause he was more pop, he was the musical genius I'm glad that The Clash "sold out", they did punk music, but they were not a punk band, they did a lot of styles (reggae, rockabilly, jazz, new wave, pop, post-punk, ska etc) The Clash, the only band that matter RIP Joe Strummer
Without a doubt, the best 75 minutes of my life..saw The Clash live in 1982,,,they were spot on,all of them, and they knew it,,it wasn't typical what they did,The Clash opened the show,,,7500 people were expecting Joe Ely and the Flatlanders to open,as is usual right.....the crowd is buzzing around, settling in,the lights go down a bit, then a bit more,,then bam! total darkness,so dark in that place, you could feel movement all around you,but could, not see person next to you...how the clash got on the stage in total darkness,I don't know then the music starts in the complete darkness,,,Death or Glory the opening bars and the lights explode on.and there they are bringing it,,Strummer and Jones are handling their guitars like machine guns,,Simonon thumping out the base,,I heard a bunch of opening songs at many concerts over the years, but I don't know if I've ever heard a better one than Death or Glory performed that night...and for the next 75 -80 minutes the Clash brought it,,,and that crowd and myself,,you new it was something special happening,a rare thing, and all those folks appreciated what they were seeing and hearing,,and we gave it back to those guys on that stage,,and I was damn lucky to be pretty damn close to the front,,The Clash played off the buzz in the crowd, and the crowd fed off the energy of those guys,,,and Strummer knew it,,you could see it in him and when it was'nt his vocals ,,you could see him talking to the other fellas,,encouraging, pushing, willing them to give it all,,,and I'm witnessing this knowing full well that I was one fortunate son of a gun ,,and they're getting to the end of they,re set,and u feel it's coming to an end,,,,And Strummer asks "do u want us to go on,do u want us to keep playing, and that damn crowd starts a chant ,and a noise that you could feel throughout your entire body,,,and they won't stop, and some son of a bitch turns the house lights up,and people get even louder, not mad,or angry,,,just louder,,and louder and when you think they can't sustain it much longer,,,man Strummer starts up with that guitar and it gets downright off the wall, and the others,,Jones ,Simonon Headon you can see there spent, and they just want to exit the stage, and they are voicelessly pleading with Strummer to somehow end this,,,and Strummer is pointing and gesturing to the crowd ,and he strikes a bargain,5hey play one more song, and he thanks everyone for coming out,,and as the music begins for that one last song,,he says " We're gonna go get some badly needed rest, and he say Joe Ely's coming out and tho give him a gracious welcome,,and to enjoy the show,,,,and the other fellas are unhooking and slowly walking of stage,,and Strummer mentions the bargain ,,and says "you all show these next guys some love and if you do,,,if I you really ,truly do,,we gonna come back out,but you all gotta bring it like you did for us,,,and we did man,we did,and I'm telling you ,,35 -40 minutes later,,,,man out come the clash ,,and I ain't never seen it ,,but I heard about it a lot growing up in West Texas,,I seen lightining strike twice in the same place ,. That night was damn remarkable,,,it's been something close to 40years ago.... I hear a Clash song on the radio now or get them on my phone,,,,takes me back
This one clip shows in 3 mins and 47 seconds just what an incredibly cool, visually and sonically band the Clash were. I started listening to them when I was 11 in 82. They were like romantic troubadour rock and roll cowboy poets- the grease in their hair; the lyrics, the passion. Those four guys-in any order - Mick Topper Paul Joe. Still a heroic foursome. Never been another band like them. Perfect.
Kevin Philips This is a band that stands the test of time. Something they share with the Stones is that they're of an era but not defined by that era. Somehow, they're timeless.
Where do you think they got the ducktail haircuts, leather stuff, bandannas, cut off sleeves, Strummer painting his Tele black, filming the "Casbah" video in Austin Texas, Strummer would stay at his house when he went to Texas and last but not least, he opened the " London Calling" Tour......The cats name is Joe Ely.Strummer adored him.Hes still playing and writing today. AINT IT FUN BEING FROM TEXAS!
man, the clash sound better to me now than they did 40 years ago !! Mick Jones really deserves a lot of credit, he was such a huge driving force in the band. this song really rocks well, in fact I'd say it gets better with age.
I love it, too. I came across some odd comments here putting down his voice...pretty rich coming from people who came here to listen to him sing this song. A good voice doesn't always mean perfection (or the fake perfection that's everywhere these days).
Mick Jones is kinda underrated. He was a really good singer and guitar player. I'm not down, with Stay Free and Train in vain are among the best of their music.
Mick was an ardent rock and roll fan. He didn't seem to be at all ready to "destroy rock and roll" and IMO that made him a very, very formidable musician. It's hard to believe he's 67 now, the year of our lord 2023. Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think...
1980 what a great year to be alive I'm walking away from the dusty shelves of hard rock and entering a world of punk followed by post-punk great times 🇬🇧
Yeah! I recall a small store popping up in my little Maryland suburb that had Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, The Clash, Sex Pistols, etc. records. It was a pivot point in my opinion. Going from polished "Fly Like An Eagle" to just foot stompin' joy.
I saw these guys play in a cheese-box of an auditorium '80. It was like watching lightning flash. There's only one thing better than listening to "London Calling"...that's seeing it played live. What a show!
I just had to come here tonight to listen to this song, when this came out 41 years ago '79 (jezuz I going to be 60 soon) I was a freshman in college. I heard this and my life changed, all the shit that I listened to went in the bin. I played this album so many times I had to replace it from all the scratches and handling. God bless the Clash - RIP Joe.
This is my favourite clash song of all time. This live version is just perfect. I was too young to see the clash. I was lucky enough to see the Joe Strummer band in the late 90s. At least I got to see one of the legends live. A gig I’ll never forget
Same Panzer... been my band for over 35 years n that's without experiencing them live. Would have a nice long sit down wi the devil and see what his trade is for that 1 time... Heard it was life changing... jammy bstrds 😂
That intro that you edited in, with Joe telling the audience there's always the toilet if they don't like this song and Mick (wearing a different shirt on a different night) looking completely defeated... damn. Makes it look like Mick was on an island with this song. I don't know how fair that is. Definitely not everyone's bag or expectation, but it is a f***ing classic in the end.
I do agree that Joe's little spiel suggesting some might not be interested was a bit tasteless, and the image of Mick edited in there doesn't help. I think Joe was worried about doing a typical "love gone wrong" type of song that might not carry as much meaning to the audience. But the song was well received and is very memorable now, so it doesn't really matter now. I think this song is so enduring because Mick was singing about something that was powerful to him, you can hear it in his voice.
My favorite clash song. My dad bought me a stereo when I was 15. I remember this song cranking on the airwaves in the late 70s after I hooked it up. Brings back fond memories.
J'ai découvert cette chanson tout récemment. J'adore les Clash , groupe qu"il faut remettre dans le contexte sociétal de l'époque. Quand on entend la m...e de nos jours, on ne peut qu'être nostalgique. So, Sirs, big respect to you and thank you for your music!!
This song holds one of my best memories. When I was still married to my ex-wife, I told her to listen to this song because it reminded me of her. When I came home from work that night, she told me, "That song was so sweet, I love you." She either lied and didn't listen to it, or she really was as dense as I thought. I'm leaning towards the second one.
I first heard the Clash in 4th grade, my sister was a punk, and I fell in love with the Clash, especially Mick. he was my first guitar hero, I even made a homemade button of his in 6th grade. The songs still give me butterflies and chills they’re so fresh and exciting and GOOD
Seeing those 3 guys in their day, rough looking in black, bad teeth and raw reminds me so much of John/Paul/George in their Hamburg days. The Clash were a great band...
They weren’t the first British punk band but they were the best and inspired a complete genre in the US starting with Op Ivy and continuing with Rancid and those who came after. “And I'll keep listening to the great Joe Strummer. Cause through music he can live forever.” Tim and Lars
If someone asked me to name the coolest band of all time I think I’d have to say The Clash. Everything about them was so stylish yet truthful. Obsessed with the Strummer/ Jones partnership at the minute. Their whole songbook- but particularly London Calling- stands up so so well to this day
Go see a doctor, because look last time that happened I assumed it was a one time thing but then it started happening in my sleep and I began chocking on my spit before I saw a doctor.
I think it took Mick and Joe and their dynamic to make The Clash. Joe obviously couldn't be The Clash without Mick and Mick couldn't have been The Clash without Joe.
Taken me right back to when I was 17 and the world was mine for the taking. What a night it was with a never ending line up of support bands. Colin, later of Conflict, was in the audience that night, first time I’d seen him since leaving school.
I was there. I got the tickets because Sammy Hagar cancelled a tour and I was standing in a Shaftsebury Avenue (London) ticket office wondering what to buy and the clash tickets just arrived. Absolutely in my tip toppermost gigs of all time. By the time they came on it was way past 10pm and they played till well after midnight. Absolutely on the top of their game, perfect in every single way, a fantastic rock and roll band, who nailed every song they played that night. Mikey Dread and Joe Ely were supporting. We were stuck in Lewisham as the trains stopped running by the time the band stopped playing.Happy, happy days. It would never have happened without Sammy, those tickets probably sold out within the hour back then. If you want to know if the legend is true about this band, take it from me they were fantastic that night in February 1980. I can never understand if how they filmed it only 3 or 4 songs have ever seen the light of day?
How much cooler could these guys be??? Not much! The Clash was the best! Saw their Combat Rock tour back in the 80's, my first concert. It was amazing. I was right at the stage. Again, Amazing guys. Miss You Joe...RIP.
2024 now. The Clash is still the coolest band ever. The only band that mattered.
Topper is a machine, a living metronome.
My all-time favorite Clash song
Mine, too.

One of the best pop/rock songs ever written. RIP Joe Strummer.
John Cusato Correct. and Joe always seemed slightly bemused by his fame.
John Cusato it's punk
It's classic. Good songs transcend genres. Dwight Yoakam even does a good cover of this song.
Just because a band is categorized as punk doesnt mean all their songs got to be punk, this is not punk deal with it
This song is punk u nerd

Awesome Footage! I like the Glare he gives to the side stage men when his mic cuts out at 1:30 Stand by me, throughout It All, stand by me NO WAY!
Dave Croy
No I have not. I bet it is great from that perspective.
Rocked that live w/the bloody Who 👍 Awesome !

My favorite live cut of this tune. Great stuff!
Dave Croy
ya i'll have to find it
Though he doesn't sing the first two words live, the actual lyrics are "You didn't stand by me. No, not at all! You didn't stand by me. No way!"
Sad and happy at the same time, just perfect!
What a great night that was, can't believe it was so long ago . Superb support bands as well.
How much cooler could these guys be??? Not much! The Clash was the best! Saw their Combat Rock tour back in the 80's, my first concert. It was amazing. I was right at the stage. Again, Amazing guys. Miss You Joe...RIP.
Saw them on that tour as well and it also was my first concert, and still to this day the best concert I ever saw
Thank you Mick, thank you Joe !
I love the Clash. I missed them first time round but my mate turned & tuned me onto Joe and his message. Awesome dude, sadly missed
Great live version. My fav Clash song!
