Doug had a transient vibration that he later dampened. I believe it started in the tail rotor and caused the boom to flex ending up at his foot pedal. Vibrations like that are a common factor with helicopters.
I’m half way through building my affordaplane and i just had to find plans for one of these ultralight helicopters on ebay 🤦🏻♂️ here i go again building more toys
Helichoppers are a trip. Earlier this Summer I took a Buddy with me in my S-12. We were just fun flying over The Flint Hills and detoured over Beaumont, Kansas. As we did this, I looked below to see a Blackhawk parked next to the grass strip. I had to land and check this out. We walked around it a few times and took pictures and were getting ready to leave when suddenly the crew arrived in a station wagon. Jeanie, the hotel/restaurant manager, brought them back after eating lunch. They turned out to be from Whiteman AFB in Missouri which is the home of the Air Force's B-2 Flying Wing Bombers. They told us they were weekend warriors out getting in some flight time. What really surprised me was the takeoff. After doing a pretty extensive pre-flight, the turbines were fired up and seemed to be in idle. They sit there a bit checking instruments and such. I'm expecting them to increase in RPM and then transition to flight but they caught me completely by surprise by just lifting into the sky in a forward trajectory and leaving the scene w/o any noticeable increase in RPM. All I can figure is that lightly loaded with just the minimal crew and no weapons, Blackhawks have so much power they don't need to spool up. It was very impressive.
I doubt it. It sounds like a bunch of bees in a mason jar after you shake it up. You can start up your chain saw and get the same motor music. Me personally, I didn't like the racket but decided to put one of my all time favorite tunes under it.

Great video! In addition to my RC helicopter, I have 6.5 hours in the jump seat of a Huey while performing aeromedical transport, so I have some idea how choppers fly. This sure looks nice, and possibly the only one I could ever own (or fly). I am, as is always the case, quite disappointed that instead of hearing the sound of the engine, we get cornball "music."
I noticed the tail rotor rotates in the opposite direction as most helicopters, usually they rotate up into the main rotor wash, was this portion of the video run backwards or does it actually turn this way ?
It has to do with the large number of competing vibrations coursing through all helicopters. They tend to manifest at one spot in the frame and in this copter they show at that foot petal.
I got my commercial and instrument rating in helicopters, and I miss it every day, but I have to admit I would be terrified to fly that thing!! How are you managing your engine power or manifold pressure and rotor RPM without gauges? Is the throttle using a correlater, or is it 100% manual? Yikes! I would at least need a rotor RPM gauge! It's so critical especially the lighter the helicopter is and the smaller the engine is the preferred rpm range for the main rotor can be a very small range between minimum and maximum rotor RPM. It becomes even more critical when you're using a light low inertia rotor system that is highly susceptible to very rapid changes and rotor RPM.
+TomVaillencourt Dear Tom, I did the music video and the interview. This is part of my movie "UFM2". I'm certain he has a rotor tach. This is a two cycle engine so he is using a tach on it also but he told me he ran it 100% all the time. I think you haven't seen the interview part yet. Curios here. No smart comments. I did the jet ski thing for about five years. Almost every weekend seriously. Colorado River. Anyhow, the "Skis" that I saw broken down more than any were those with Rotax motors. When I started to view videos of ultralights and so on, I saw that many used Rotax motors. This seemed odd to me due to my anecdotal "evidence". I also noticed that Yamaha motors seemed to be virtually bullet proof. The stock ones anyhow. However, I don't see Yamaha motors in Ultralights. Is there anything to this?

Hey Brian! Loving the videos, man!! How come you don't fly any higher than maybe 10 feet off the ground?! If I had one of these, I'd be going as high as a I could... TO THE CLOUDS AND BEYOND!!! What is the name of this song, by the way?
Actually I am sometimes only about 2 feet but I get your drift. One reason I fly so low is because it is more fun and more challenging. Also, when I want to go long distances I get better range because when you are at an altitude below 1/2 of the wingspan you are in what is called "Ground Effect". Ground effect is an interesting phenomenon that allows a plane to "float", as it where, on a cushion of air. The aircraft needs less power to stay airborne and thus you can go farther. During the Cold War, the Russians built a real cool, huge set of planes based on this concept called Ekranoplans (see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caspian_Sea_Monster). All that being said, I do fly higher but when shooting movies it looks like the plane is standing still. Not very interesting... BY THE WAY... I have been working on a secret project since March of this year. Yesterday I shot some more video for it and it is absolutely stunning... I'll leave it at that but as soon as I can I will edit this piece and put it up here. Be looking for it. One hint, though... You might not like it because about half of it is "down on the deck"! Why is his left foot bouncing on the yaw pedal?? Is that from being nervous or from the tail blades being unbalanced? (I noticed theres some tail vibrations)
I think it's natural nerves really. I have the same problem flying an RC heli at times. With my hand though of course. If I'm sort of on the edge of my abilities, I may shake a bit.

That's what a variety of folks are trying to do with drone-type craft. If you search the web you will find a lot of experiments in that direction. I think the main thing to conquer, though, is the noise inherent in the design. Whenever you have propellers turning at the high speeds drones use, you get a lot of racket from the tips. Maybe a ducted fan drone can work.

Which engine (bicycle, car or anything else ) you used in this project ?
You can't hear the engine just wind noise. You can mute the music and play Nascar in the background and get a better idea of what it sounds like.
I noticed the tail rotor rotates in the opposite direction as most helicopters, usually they rotate up into the main rotor wash, was this portion of the video run backwards or does it actually turn this way ?
