- What Battery will fit into a Gameboy Cartridge?
There are multiple batteries that will fit into a Gameboy game card.
What batteries will fit and where to get them? I am replacing a old original Battery out of a Warioland game card and take measurements of the case so you know what battery fits.
UPDATE 2020!:
One of my Subscribers had multiple Pokemon games tested!
Blue cartridge: CR1616 or CR2025
Silver cartridge: CR1616 or CR2025
Yellow cartridge: CR1616 ONLY!
Thanks to Homeward Majin for this info!

I filed out some space in my pokemon silver cart on the inside and managed to cram a CR2032 in it and it seems to be working like a charm. Can't believe I'm actually playing it again! Next I need to find a replacement for the game label and it's good to go!
Regards from Brazil bro, your video as saved my 151 Pokemons on pokemon yellow cartridge :D
Thanks for this video! Straight to the point!
That video saved my life, dude! You are awesome, greetings from Brazil!
It's such a high quality video. It deserves more views and subscribers!
awesome video thank u! saved me time of researching / testing
Thank you so much! Valuable content
Nice channel dude!
Thanks man, appreciate that ;)
Awesome, have to measure my sockets, imaging never needing to put heat on that board ever again. Just pop in a new battery! 😎
Thx now i can buy the cr2032 i wasn't sure it could fit, but I didn't measure the space.
I hopened a cartridge of Pokémon gold to replace the battery and the original one was a cr2025, for anyone wandering about Pokémon games using bigger batteries
I just figured all this out as I bought the 1616 off of Amazon and opened my gold copy from childhood and it’s the 2025 ( or 32 ) that’s needed.
Same here. The 1616 was too small. Will the cr2032 work for the silver Pokémon?
On a lighter note, is anyone else terrified that this guy is creating Terminator robots?? :)
I have a Pokemon Blue and a Pokemon Yellow along with a Pokemon Silver open on my station currently. I can confirm that Blue takes CR2025 along with (by the looks of it) Silver. Yet Yellow definitely takes CR1616. Intriguing to say the least.
Would a cr2025 fit into a yellow pokemon game spacewise?
@@MancaveEffects You see I tried that, though for the life of me I couldn't get the top cover back on during reassembly with that size battery in. The border hanging on the inside would clip the cr2025, so I felt it best to go back to 1616.
Okay good to know, i will add ghis to the description of the video! :)
@@MancaveEffects Well I'm certainly glad I was able to help in some way. Keep up the good content my man! C:
My yellow is in rough shape on the outside so I might try to scratch at the inside she'll to fit the larger size. No wonder the yellows are all dead while some red and blue games still work.
Yeah, pokemon games use CR2525, I ordered some batteries from ebay and I screwed up with that because they were cr1616
They have the same voltage but last longer
Are those batteries faulty... it seems i put them and they only last a couple days.
Hey I wanna ask you some thing , so recently l gave my gb games to a technician, they fixed the battery’s of the game but it was the wrong battery he replaced a Different one (CR 2032 ) so it is not saving , now should I give it to him and tell him to put the right battery again or will that harm my gb game
The cr2032 should last for many years as it is the biggest one that fit inside a Gb game. So maybe the solder joint isn‘t good or the battery is faulty.
Your information on the GBA is wrong.
I just easily fit a 2025 in Pokémon Ruby that had a 1616 in it. It fit no problem.
URGENT QUESTION! PLZ HELP
I cant find the answer to this question anywhere. so the 1616 battery is the smallest. so does that mean it will work for all games even is the original battery in that game is larger? im looking to chane the batteries on multiple game boy games. including red yellow and gold of the pokemon series. i know red and yellow take different bateries. is it ok to put the 1616 in those games without complications? thanks in advance
It will work but the batterylife will be compromised and does not last as long
Is CR1620 useable for the same game with a Cr1616 battery before in it.
yes it is, as it has more capacity it will last longer and should fit.
Mancave Effects thank you 🙏🏼
and for such a quick answer
Did he just solder it backwards
What are the measurement from positive to negative pins?
tbh it literally is written on the game's pcb which battery you need
Yea, but he is trying to show us whether bigger batteries, with a longer battery life will work other than just a CR1616 battery.
Does anyone know for the gba Pokémon games (ruby, sapphire, emerald, fire red, or leaf green) if we should use a cr1616 or cr2025?
You can use the cr1616, if i remember correct the 2025 and 2030 are to big for these games. Voltage is the same on all of the three.
Greetings and congratulations for your very informative video.
I just wanted to ask if a CR2040 would be feasible to be installed on gb/gbc/gba games as well. Space wise I think they could made it, taken you could trim the tabs in order to be placed correctly, and width size should be exact up to the ROM position.
I also thought about the CR2320, since the gb shells do have enough space on the top.
This should be great for RTC hungry games, for all others the FRaM mod works the best.
Dont know about the 2040 🤔
@@MancaveEffects they're available on Amazon etc, so I can't wait to see an updated video with a CR2040!
the number "CR 2040" indicates the batteries' dimensions. "20" mm diameter and "4"."0" mm thickness.
the video author measured the available space to be approximately 3.2 to 3.5 mm
...therefore, mathematically, a 2040 would not fit
( i mean you could try, but the attempt to re-assemble the cartridge or insert it into the GB may damage it)
personally i think it's easier to replace a dead battery than replace a damaged 20-year old game
What kind of ending sound is that?
You mean the slime pour? ;-)....
i'd avoid using a 2032 regardless of the available space.
With any type of electrical power source you need to make considerations for the heat produced. Not only is this component notoriously susceptible to defects and degradation during ideal operating conditions, but, when overheated, it can shorten the life of not only the power source itself, but also the surrounding electronics.
Bottom line: I suspect that the thickness of the CR2032 prevents proper heat dissipation and would damage the game's circuit board. I STRONGLY ADVISE SELECTING A SMALLER ALTERNATIVE
nonsense, these batteries only have around 170mah and they last for decades, we are talking about current draws in the microamps range, what heat are you talking about. there is no heat there. there is not enough power to produce heat. the gameboy was designed to consume the minimum amount of power to keep the batteries running as long as possible. there is no excess of power to produce heat
