Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down X-men 97....Owwww.

The new series is here and throughout it we're gonna break down the easter eggs, hidden details and things you might have missed. I've written this to be as newcomer friendly as possible so hopefully you can enjoy it even if you haven't seen the other 96 X-men ey ey ey.
Have to say straight up though I loved these two episodes and all the worries I had really went away as soon as that title screen started. This perfectly manages to recapture the feel of the original show which started over 30 years ago.
1992....ufffhhh.
It was the final season that aired in 1997 and we ended with an episode called Graduation day. This seemed like a step in a positive direction as we had a Mutant and Human Relations Summit. However things went awry with Henry Gyrich who attacked Professor X with an energy Disruptor.
This made Charles send out a pschic blast out of his control that caused the audience bigger headaches than my accent.
Gyrich is some one we meet in the episodes and he's someone who featured in both the movies and comics.
In the original series he was pretty much a generic guy in a suit whereas here he's more inline with his comic book counterpart.

His choreography was incredible, the way he would use his blasts to push himself backwards or breaking his fall out of the blackbird, really good and creative use of his powers

@@mrfacephone Age of Apocalypse story was way better though; Gambit caught Magneto & Rogue, he got in his face and then the team got ambushed by a big bad guy (a different character named Wolverine) who Gambit defeated and then he told the team to go F themselves basically after saving them and he went to do his own thing with the X-Ternals. Plus it was the age of apocalypse so Rogue going with Magneto made more sense because Magneto in AoA was far better a person & the apocalyptic times justified the matchup. X-Men '97 going with a similar storyline doesn't work as well; makes Rogue look bad, makes Gambit look jaded, makes Magneto look creepy. I'm sure the storyline will resolve itself but as a fan of that Age of Apocalypse story I can't say I am impressed with X-Men 97 going that direction. Especially after fans of Gambit & Rogue had to suffer through Fox never pairing them up in the films, it's whack. just because it was done in the comics doesn't mean it should be done again in media.
Gambit charged Wolverine claws!?!?!!! Come on, that is next level.
Cyclops using his blast to himself to avoid enemy attacks and using his blast to break his fall were my favorite moments. That shot where he looks like he's gliding in the air as he blasts the floor to push himself to safety was so satisfying to watch.
Poor Gambit. Rogue, who once went to the extreme of almost becoming a horseman of Apocalypse to permanently remove her powers gets surrounded by power removal collars and rather than slipping one into the bedroom for Remy, heads straight to Eric. Worst friend zoning ever.
It's not that easy. In mutant culture, those are instruments of torture and genocide. It's like you ask a holocaust survivor to role-playing a Gestapo officer in the bedroom
@@antoniousai1989 Except Rogue's entire story from the series is desperately wanting to be able to control her powers. That would give her an on/off switch that she controlled. The problem with saying everything that's bad is bad in all ways is it prevents making something good out of a bad situation. This tool is her dream come true but she won't use it because she doesn't like its inventor? If Forge made the same device, we'd be watching those two miss every mission for a month.
@@davidr6702 It's not about the device, you don't get my point. Mutants define themselves with their powers. Removing them, even temporarily, it's like losing a part of your identity.
You use the tool and are unhappy because you lost a part of yourself. It's an unsatisfying compromise both ways you choose to go.

This is nostalgia done right. It kept the feel of the original show while improving on animation. I can’t wait to see more!
Also seeing the original 5 X-Men portrait at the mansion is awesome. We also see the return of Catherine Disher this time as Valerie Cooper who was the OG Jean Grey.

It had WTF moments throughout...in a good way. My jaw was on the ground for the ep. 1 ending fight from "To me my X-Men" to the UN arriving it was so dope to see them in all their bad-ass glory. Leave it to the internet to trash this thing before it even came out? Did anyone miss Rouges' cheeks...I think NOT! PS As a kid from the 90s I loved the rave section...we actually did dance around with glow sticks and I loved Jubilees' moves with her special flair. Damn this was good $hit!
The first 2 episodes were incredible!!! I absolutely loved this season premiere kick-off! I wasn't born in the '90s but my father kept a bunch of VHS tapes with a lot of the old X-Men: The Animated Series episodes on them and I grew up rewatching those same episodes as a kid. The action was fantastic, and I'm really digging the new animation style for the show. I just binged the entire original series, and I gotta say that this is a significant step up in terms of animation quality, of course. All the characters are just as charismatic as they were in the previous series, if not even more so. Hearing some of the classic voices return for their roles in this Revival series is so heartwarming and nostalgic. I'm also really digging the new blood when it comes to the new additions to the voice cast. The new voices for Gambit, Scott Summers, and Jubilee specifically sound really great and worthy successors to the original voice actors. I'm really loving what they're setting up for the overarching story of the season. I can't wait to move on to the next batch of episodes as soon as they release. Everything feels like a significant step up to a lot of the great things from the original show and this is clear proof that the people who worked on the show are true X-Men fans in grew up watching the original animated series. Ultimately, though, this awesome premier batch of episodes really reminded me how much I missed the X-Men as a family. It's been awhile since I really delve into the world of the X-Men like this and honestly I'm glad the show came out to reunite the fire I have for the X-Men that's some of the old fox movies might have dampered a little bit. Marvel's/The MCU's first crack, the X-Men, was done masterfully, in my opinion, and I can't wait to see more! 10/10 Premiere for this show! 🎆✨️🙌

@@franklin8618 Yeah it was a really awesome experience watching the original five seasons of the X-Men animated series in preparation for X-Men 97 but the nostalgic memories of my early Childhood years watching the original show through my dad's VHS tapes remain unmatched. It's just been an incredible experience all around being a fan of the X-Men! 🙌
The Jean Grey clone Madelyn Pryor I assume we saw in the end of episode 2 and it's the handy work of Mr. Sinister voiced by the incredible Christopher Britton in the original series who will be the villain for sure during this season.
The biological Mother of Cable in the comics.
Christopher Britton is not far behind with reprising the role of Mr. Sinister. I think its the other way around where pregnant Jean is the clone Madelyne Pryor and the real Jean Grey is the one that knocked on the door looking for help.
Pregnant “Jean” is the clone., “Jean” at the door is the real Jean, assuming the show sticks with the comic book parentage (Madeline Pryor is Cable’s mom)

That was incredible! Everything an X-Men show should be. First episode was just incredibly badass and episode 2, so profound. With everything happening in the world right now, I was honestly moved by Magneto's words. I can not wait to see where this goes. 10/10!
As the biggest Sunspot fan probably on the planet, the first episode was such fan service to me. What a way to start, I love this show inside and out already. The team dynamics are to die for and something I personally love in any media. I physically cannot wait for the next episodes and for Sunspot to return with a chance to kick ass with his powers
Also about the kid, it could possibly be him given the skin tone of the parents. But his mother had red hair in the comics, the mother there did not. Maybe they changed it, who knows

I like seeing Morph in action! Especially how the writers portrayed it here. I used to be so confused as a kid regarding how is abilities worked, but you can see how his powers extend to density control which is neat

Anyone else notice Wolverine says "Jeez, DAD" to Cyclops in the Blackbird, instead of "Jeez, bub" like he did in the trailers? Small change, but so much more sarcastic and condescending considering Wolverine is generations older than Cyclops. Loved it.

Rogue can fly because she absorbed captain marvels powers in full scope, that episode if you rewatch it, she flies around after first taking her powers.

18:45 While the colors are different the basic design of just an off the shoulder crop top over a body suit is reminiscent of Rogue’s costume in Uncanny X-Men in the 80’s (You can see her wearing it on the covers of X-men 194 & 197)

I wouldn't be surprised if they made Jean and Scott's baby Nate Grey (X-Man). It would be easier than trying to explain why Cable in the animated series didn't recognize anyone. Though it would be nice to see more Cable in this so we can all enjoy TYLER again 😂

There’s no hellfire gala in the movies but the hellfire club was in first class. Also this might be heading towards the age of apocalypse since it looks like rogue and magneto have a thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s been an alternate timeline all along cuz of bishops and cables time travel shenanigans

Dude I just re-watched the OG series for the 1st time since my childhood. Immediately after finishing I watched the first 2 eps of 97’ last night and 🤩!!! The animation style is sooooo much better it’s crazy. I love it, it enables the X-Men to display their powers better! Especially Storm and Cyclops

This team has more actual teamwork during battles than any MCU avengers ever did. They didn't make wolverine the focus.. and he's actually short as he's supposed to be
Did not expect the Rogue relationship to have been a thing and despite what Magneto said about his helmet, we saw Charles telepathically communicate with him multiple times while having it on.
Yeah well iirc the helmet being a psychic shield originated in the 2000s x-men films

I friggin loved it... i braced for myself for some crap based on the last 2 weeks of reading about some of the people behind the scenes, but none of that mattered at all...
I honestly thought it was basically an upgrade, in all ways, of that damn show i loved as a wee lad just entering my teens....
I was praying for a 3rd episode now, like how yous guys got a 3 episode sneak peak lol

When I saw that last episode as a kid I always thought that it meant next season was going to be all about Onslaught!!!
For those that don't know, Onslaught is Magneto with the consciousness of both Xavier & Magneto & both their powers amplifying each other.
So when Magneto saves Xavier & he lives on & says he'll come back one day I thought that was a set up for the next season with Onslaught. What a downer for a little kid...
So I think when Xavier comes back he has to use Magneto's body & something goes wrong & ONSLAUGHT IS BORN!!!

this should also clear up what Morph looked like in the comics. I believe he was actually created for the show and that was Iceman who came before.
EH the magnetic thing is a weird one and really doesn't make sense for Rogue. I would think its more Erik has control over atoms/electrons and thus is creating a forcefield around his skin for her to be able to touch. Like her power is likely stealing energy/life force. And she can only fly due absorbing Cpt Marvel's powers, which include her invulnerability and strength. Also shows you never read the comics and watched the show, since she basically drained Cpt Marvel near death, holding on for way too long, thus never losing these abilities for a long long time.
The magnetic forcefield was explained in the first Age of Apocalypse series. That's how they were able to touch,

Wanda is the one completely bound in her cell with a glowing collar around her neck. I always thought it was a nice touch, given her Mutant history in the comics and animated shows.
Gonna be honest here and I know it's been just 2 episodes but, I started reading X-Men in the 80s, so my favorite roster is the one after Cyclops leaves the X-Men when Jean died the first time.
Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Kitty Pride, Rogue, Psylocke, Dazzler and Longshot.
And since they seem to be doing Madelyne Prior, Havok would also be a good add up.
One of the biggest problems is just that it is better than what Marvel has put out so far. I mean, why would you want the Avengers, even today, when the X-Men are here. The X-men are just cooler and the first two episodes make that painfully obvious.
These first 2 episodes were amazing and so nostalgic. Can't wait for the rest of them

You’d think Beast and Rogue might try to miniaturize the collar tech and make it something she can turn on and off. So that way she can wear, like, a bracelet or necklace that negates her powers for personal time and then take it off or turn it off for superhero time.
The jubilee dancing part was rad.
