I think the only problem with separating two divisions, one with drugs one without, would be the drop in viewership for the drug free division and possibly prize pool. In my opinion 'worlds strongest man' competitions shouldn't be drug tested. When I'm watching such a contest I want to see just how far humans can push their strength with and without drugs. Maybe it would be smart to have one competition which was clean and another that didn't drug test.

To everyone saying that Mark Henry took steroids: 1. You can’t expect that Mark would be a naturally small guy, his whole family is/was big. This is especially true in the case of Chudd (Mark’s great uncle), who was 6’ 7” and close to 500 pounds. 2. Mark weighed over 200 pounds in fourth grade. 3. Mark deadlifted over 800 pounds before graduating out of high school. Who would recklessly take PEDs before even turning 18? Mark is not lying about this, he is and always was drug-free.

At the end of the day, we’ll never know and it doesn’t matter because it all comes down to genetics. On a side note: Yes. There are PED hook-ups for some schools. Love Mark he's a good dude Luke is great too. But both of these guys are neglecting to talk about the fact that you can cycle off of certain substances prior to a test. For some anabolics they can be out of your system within 5 to 24 hours depending on the half-life of the substance. For example anavar takes only 5 hours to completely disappear from your system. What all athletes do is time their cycle so they keep the effects, just because it isn't in your system doesn't mean your body just instantly deflates to nothing or that all of your gains from training are instantly gone.

Mark Henry is in no way free to speak the truth because he still works for the Arnolds. Presenting for the Arnolds is his main job. So he cannot even address the elephant in the room, that everyone in strongman and non IPF powerlifting is using almost unlimited quantities of steroids. In tested sports like Olympic weightlifting and IPF powerlifting, they use PEDs whenever they are able to get away with it. Strongman as a sport at the pro level is totally dependent on steroids. Every single athlete is using and ESPECIALLY at the Arnold's which is famous for the heaviest events, which would not even be biologically possible with out steroids. So Henry is part of the industry depending on and encouraging steroid use. @kmden Rt in weightlifting China and Russia are the most dominant by miles. But they still don't always get get caught. But over the past few years the IOC has been very tough on Russia. From what I understand it is all about bribes, if the right person never got paid or if perhaps the IOC got embarrassed by systemic blatant doping and finally got sick of it they might sic wada on them. But during much of China & Russia's most dominant periods they have been blatantly doping. Also the other former USSR countries, female weightlifters from countries like Armenia look straight up like men. In the couple previous Olympics to Rio I recall the whole Thailand squad getting popped too. If the IOC, IWF and wada really cared they would automatically issue tougher sanctions. As it is, getting caught just gets you a 4 year ban on competing. This is conveniently enough time to allow the same athlete to compete in the next Olympics! it takes a great deal to get a lifetime ban. Also IWF scrubs the existing weight categories and makes new ones about once per decade. This is specifically to allow new world records to be made to keep the sport exciting for spectators, but it also means they do not have to do anything about the previous world records which have generally ALL been performed by dopers, many of whom may have got caught. But if they kept the same weight categories and wanted to honour new world records that merely tied previous doped records, it would really highlight how dirty the sport is. The IOC, IWF, broadcasters and sponsors are not ready for that.
@kmden Rt all Group A weightlifters are definitely doping. It is not biologically possible otherwise. All of group B and a lot of group C are doping too. Weightlifters at the commonwealth games get caught and that is only as competitive as US nationals. There are other sports were some top athletes may not dope, but weightlifting is definitely not one of them. The level is just far too high. Weightlifters were the very first athletes to dope. The US team based at York barbell were doping in the early 1960s. USSR may have been a little earlier. We all basically have no idea what natural elite weightlifting even looks like. It happened before the video camera age.

Literally everyone is on drugs, it's well-known, and it's a completely even playing field in that respect. I can understand the even playing field argument in relation to powerlifting or Olympic lifting, and it's good powerlifting is segregated into tested and untested federations for the sake of even competition. But in the case of strongman where we're taking about the biggest, freakiest human specimens in existence pushing their body to the absolute limits of human potential, drug use is basically entirely accepted and embraced. Without it the sport would be diminished, because spectators want to see that freak show element that drugs help facilitate. I'm not even sure what is argument is in relation to strongman other than "well I did it without drugs so everyone else should have to too!" But blends it with his experiences in weightlifting which are irrelevant in relation to the strongman discussion in relation to drugs. Strongman is not WWE. I don’t think Mark should treat PEDs in Strongman the same way they do in Pro Wrestling. No doubt in my mind Mark is lying. Strongman would be lame without PED’s. They would have the same size and they couldn’t lift the kinds of weights they do nowadays. Also, the drugs help them recover better and heal more quickly, which is not only better for the athlete but also us as fans. You could take tom martin or pete rubish as examples. Both have exceptional deadlifting genetics, and pulled in the mid 700lbs clean (or on dosages low enough to pass ipf drug tests). When they went heavy on steroids (they documented it themselves), their deadlifts jumped up to 900+lbs. So yea, pretty big gap, and deadlift ain't even the best example because it is the least bodyweight dependant lift.

A lot of people are clean, but most of the top guys use or have used (i personally know both cases). The reason is simple: when you have suspicions that others take peds, and you still want to win, you take stuff to keep up with the competition. And there is a lot more than personal ambition behind that: team, federation, or political agendas + satisfying the consumer because he needs heroes and beaten records. I dont blame athletes for everything, i mostly blame structures, and the concept of sport as market value.

To everyone saying that Mark Henry took steroids:
1. You can’t expect that Mark would be a naturally small guy, his whole family is/was big. This is especially true in the case of Chudd (Mark’s great uncle), who was 6’ 7” and close to 500 pounds.
2. Mark weighed over 200 pounds in fourth grade.
3. Mark deadlifted over 800 pounds before graduating out of high school. Who would recklessly take PEDs before even turning 18?

Maybe in modern time ie., since past 10-20 years athletes r using peds in high school but not in Mark Henry's time which was in late 80s and specially in silsbee, Texas the town he comes from which was a very small town with population of approx. 6500 . He was 100% natural.

There is a possibility (keyword: possibility) that he could’ve indulged in something light like HGH at one point, but it would have very little effect at his level.
At the end of the day, we’ll never know and it doesn’t matter because it all comes down to genetics.
On a side note: Yes. There are PED hook-ups for some schools. I’m glad to hear that Mark Henry’s school had a moral compass and never tried to put the kids on the stuff. Anyone that pushes PEDs to kids is a scumbag.
The Arnold Classic, for whom Henry works, is repudiated by the US government for its stance on PED's, which is unfettered access, with no testing. It's kind of questionable to rail on Bjornsson when he would be fundamentally aware of the nature of PED use in the strongman world.
Mark Henry was well respected by me before this. I cannot believe that he threw Thor under the bus like. Mark was as juiced up as anyone else, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE WHO COMPETES IN WORLDS STRONGEST MAN! Don't be a fool and believe this interview.

But both of these guys are neglecting to talk about the fact that you can cycle off of certain substances prior to a test. For some anabolics they can be out of your system within 5 to 24 hours depending on the half-life of the substance. For example anavar takes only 5 hours to completely disappear from your system. What all athletes do is time their cycle so they keep the effects, just because it isn't in your system doesn't mean your body just instantly deflates to nothing or that all of your gains from training are instantly gone.

Mark Henry is in no way free to speak the truth because he still works for the Arnolds. Presenting for the Arnolds is his main job.
So he cannot even address the elephant in the room, that everyone in strongman and non IPF powerlifting is using almost unlimited quantities of steroids.
In tested sports like Olympic weightlifting and IPF powerlifting, they use PEDs whenever they are able to get away with it.
Strongman as a sport at the pro level is totally dependent on steroids. Every single athlete is using and ESPECIALLY at the Arnold's which is famous for the heaviest events, which would not even be biologically possible with out steroids.
So Henry is part of the industry depending on and encouraging steroid use.
I have no problem with that but he is a total hypocrite POS if he feels the need to respond to Thors interview by bad mouthing users as dirty cheaters.
@kmden Rt in weightlifting China and Russia are the most dominant by miles. But they still don't always get get caught. But over the past few years the IOC has been very tough on Russia. From what I understand it is all about bribes, if the right person never got paid or if perhaps the IOC got embarrassed by systemic blatant doping and finally got sick of it they might sic wada on them. But during much of China & Russia's most dominant periods they have been blatantly doping. Also the other former USSR countries, female weightlifters from countries like Armenia look straight up like men.
In the couple previous Olympics to Rio I recall the whole Thailand squad getting popped too.
If the IOC, IWF and wada really cared they would automatically issue tougher sanctions. As it is, getting caught just gets you a 4 year ban on competing. This is conveniently enough time to allow the same athlete to compete in the next Olympics! it takes a great deal to get a lifetime ban.
Also IWF scrubs the existing weight categories and makes new ones about once per decade. This is specifically to allow new world records to be made to keep the sport exciting for spectators, but it also means they do not have to do anything about the previous world records which have generally ALL been performed by dopers, many of whom may have got caught.
But if they kept the same weight categories and wanted to honour new world records that merely tied previous doped records, it would really highlight how dirty the sport is. The IOC, IWF, broadcasters and sponsors are not ready for that.
@kmden Rt all Group A weightlifters are definitely doping. It is not biologically possible otherwise. All of group B and a lot of group C are doping too.
Weightlifters at the commonwealth games get caught and that is only as competitive as US nationals.
There are other sports were some top athletes may not dope, but weightlifting is definitely not one of them. The level is just far too high. Weightlifters were the very first athletes to dope. The US team based at York barbell were doping in the early 1960s. USSR may have been a little earlier. We all basically have no idea what natural elite weightlifting even looks like. It happened before the video camera age.

I also don’t play sports or have a vibe for it but when I play I surprise my self on how I’m able to keep up. When I was 5 I had abs as if I worked out. All these things are gifts from my ancestors.

Literally everyone is on drugs, it's well-known, and it's a completely even playing field in that respect. I can understand the even playing field argument in relation to powerlifting or Olympic lifting, and it's good powerlifting is segregated into tested and untested federations for the sake of even competition. But in the case of strongman where we're taking about the biggest, freakiest human specimens in existence pushing their body to the absolute limits of human potential, drug use is basically entirely accepted and embraced. Without it the sport would be diminished, because spectators want to see that freak show element that drugs help facilitate. I'm not even sure what is argument is in relation to strongman other than "well I did it without drugs so everyone else should have to too!" But blends it with his experiences in weightlifting which are irrelevant in relation to the strongman discussion in relation to drugs. Source: been following strength sports closely for 10 year and competed in powerlifting for four.

Strongman is not WWE. I don’t think Mark should treat PEDs in Strongman the same way they do in Pro Wrestling. No doubt in my mind Mark is lying. Strongman would be lame without PED’s. They would have the same size and they couldn’t lift the kinds of weights they do nowadays. Also, the drugs help them recover better and heal more quickly, which is not only better for the athlete but also us as fans. It is an even playing field when they can all take the same kinds of PED’s. I can understand having drug testing in most sports but Strongman is definitely not one of them.

You could take tom martin or pete rubish as examples.
Both have exceptional deadlifting genetics, and pulled in the mid 700lbs clean (or on dosages low enough to pass ipf drug tests).
When they went heavy on steroids (they documented it themselves), their deadlifts jumped up to 900+lbs.
So yea, pretty big gap, and deadlift ain't even the best example because it is the least bodyweight dependant lift.

A lot of people are clean, but most of the top guys use or have used (i personally know both cases). The reason is simple: when you have suspicions that others take peds, and you still want to win, you take stuff to keep up with the competition. And there is a lot more than personal ambition behind that: team, federation, or political agendas + satisfying the consumer because he needs heroes and beaten records.
I dont blame athletes for everything, i mostly blame structures, and the concept of sport as market value.
