New Bike Day! DAHON HIT & DAHON Boardwalk D7 Folding Bike Review

- Today we are doing a bike check review of the new 2022 Dahon HIT folding bike and popular Asian model Dahon Boardwalk D7 folding bike.
We have been really interested in folding bikes lately since we want to use them for our future world travels. This is our first time on 20 inch wheel folding bikes, and as a taller rider (6ft / 183cm) I was very impressed with how well these bikes fit me despite being folding bikes, which I always assumed just fit better on shorter riders.
The other great things about both of these bikes is they can fit both my wife and myself with a simple quick release saddle and stem adjustment.
Here is more information about each bike, including components, weight, folding size, etc.

Looking forward for more details review, how it feels when using in daily activities.
Here in the Philippines, folding bikes are huge! Dahon and Tern are a staple. I own a Boardwalk D7 black by the way.
Recently sub to your channel and been binge watching your cycling around Japan while coop up in a lock down where I'm from.. And believe it or not, you actually got me to order my first bike since my last ride in high school 17 years ago.. And my Giant Escape 2 baby is coming next week! 😍
Keep up the good work Mr&Mrs Cruzie! 👍
Awesome! Enjoy the bike! Giant Escapes are great city bikes :)
i have a dahon boardwalk D7 in black and silver. love the ride quality and comfort. longest single trip i did was a 70km on it and it feels solid throughout.
I actually like the Boardwalk D7. Thanks for the review. 👍🏻
Love the looks of Dahon Boardwalk. I have been using mine for 3 years with over 10000 km mileage. Longest single ride is 700 km for 4 days.
Nice!
I've been busy at work so I'm Binge watching your old videos that I missed, I also own a D7 and it rides like a dream, I want to own a Brompton someday or the copy like your Mobot Royale. The good thing about Dahon Boardwalk D7 is you can customized it depending on your needs, mine has a drop bar (I don't fold it anymore) but nothing beats Brompton or the clone versions because of its compact fold. I will miss your Japanese videos but the adventure doesn't end in one place. Good luck on your future travels.
Thanks! Both are great bikes!
Great choice for FB! Loving the classic look.
Surprisingly one of the best brands I see around Philippines.
Much love from the Tiklop* Society of the Philippines
*means Fold!
Thanks! I hope we can make it over there with our folding bikes once things open up.
You’re in for a surprise! 😅 the basket came with your hit, no?
Finally a folding bike!!! Been watching most of you vids, but havent seen a dahon bike reviews, or bikes rides. More post / videos pretty please, by the way feels great to own & ride a dahon anywhere everywhere. T.L.C. from TW!!
More to come :)
@@TwoWheelCruise excited & cant wait!!
Lovely bikes :) I ride a Tern Verge N8 myself. These folding bikes are a lot of fun
Yes they are!
i'm one of the people that recommended you look at *DAHON* (along w/ *TERN* ) folding bikes when you first brought them up many months ago.
glad you finally got to test out some. hope you like them. i have a slightly older (but customized) *VISC D18* .
surprised the black ones came w/ all *DAHON* parts. usually *DAHON* bikes come w/ EVERYTHING *Shimano* & really good *Schwalbe Big Apple* tires.
i guess the only way to make this version available for so cheap was to use their own in-house parts.
Thanks for your recommendation! We're really happy to have been able to test these out and they are doing a great job so far on all of our ride tests.
The HIT sells for $400 here in Japan, so would be hard to get that price point without in-house parts I think.
I like that the basket doesn't have to come off for the HIT to fold down! Looks like a really convenient package for shopping and getting around the neighborhood. My worry with folders has always been keeping things tidy and well-maintained. It seems like it'd be hard to keep everything clean to store in an apartment and difficult to work on due to the size and non-standard components, awkward long cable runs that have to account for folding, etc. Too bad going cable and chain-less with belt drives and electronic shifting would be wildly expensive! I have seen some single-speed folders before that look pretty clean, no cables and no worrying about a derailleur really low the ground.
It was a nice surprise to see the bike fold down with the basket on. I agree, I'd really like a SS folding bike with a possible internal gear hub, but they all seem really expensive.
They’re just SO cute!!! Congrats 🎉😊
(Ruby chan & Kuro sama) hehe
Thanks! Nice ideas :)
I bought a Dahon in 1985! It was crude compared to today's models. I used it for train rides. The owners, Hon brothers, changed the name from Hon to Dahon because a furniture company called Hon threatened a lawsuit.
I’m in love!
dahon are pretty good in the folding bike department. im glad you got to test them out! i personally like 1x bikes so it comes down to price. and as you said, folding bikes are really easy to fit into. my opinion is that they are the best first bikes to have because they can help find your fit! not a fan of kickstands since it can stand after you fold it.
tip: you can leave the handle bars unfolded, while the bike frame is folded and you can pull or push it around with the handle bars. that would seem easier when you still have to move the bike around while still needing to keep it compact (e.g. if you're boarding public transports, etc)
Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try!
Love the red one. Looks classier and comes with Shimano. I'm sure the Dahon derailleur is fine--I just have a bit of a bias I guess. Lol. That and I really like the button shifter as well vs the twist shifter.
Both look good though. Dahon really has some nice looking products. I know the name and have heard before that they're popular in the folding bike space. Now I understand more about why that is. Thank you. Enjoy your awesome new rides!
Yes, it definitely looks classier and love the button shifters :)
Let us know your name ideas for our new bikes!
Mickey and Minnie would be good bike names.
Walkie chan for the D7 and Hit chan for well... The Hit?
Batman and Robin
Nice ideas!
Pinto and Kuro
I've owned a few of Dahon folders and I found that, if you have to carry your bike in a bag (In Japan you cannot take a bike on a train or a bus without wrapping it), the MU line worked best. Surprisingly 3-4 lbs in weight make quite a difference when switching platforms or stations.
Yep, all bikes need to be covered in most trains in Japan
I have enjoyed your channel for some time now. BTW, my wife, daughter and I have been "foldies" for a few years now. I cannot recommend folding bikes enough. We not only use them almost every day here in sunny California, but we travel internationally and, with just a little disassembly, put our folding bikes in checked luggage suitcases for travel. We therefore avoid airline bike fees and charges. They are a great way get around and have adventures otherwise not possible with other modes of transportation. Oh, and in some countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, etc., there are lots of "foldies" clubs you can join on group rides. Great way to make new friends and have fun. Enjoy!!!
We're happy to finally join the club! Which bikes do you suggest for bringing in suitcases? These and other 20" wheel bikes unfortunately seem too big.
@@TwoWheelCruise Of course, the smaller 16" wheel folding bikes are a bit easier to pack overall. However, my wife and I find them to be a bit "quirky" to ride. They are not as stable as bikes with larger wheels and, with a bit of frame flex and especially at speed, tend to wobble, making the ride not as enjoyable. The other thing is that the "roads" in Asia, especially SE Asia, are not as well-kept and free from hazards as other places such as Japan, Netherlands, etc. Larger wheels don't get caught in rain grates, potholes, cracks and go over larger obstacles than the small wheels. Therefore, we have folders with 20" wheels. We have found them very packable in a maximum size suitcase (62 linear inches or 29"x17'x13") but it does require disassembly and reassembly. The frames themselves fit well with wheels, seat, handlebar stems off, but the deraileur has to be removed in order to fit within the suitcase. This necessitates folding the chain in a manner so it doesnt get tangled during reassembly (not too big of a deal) and covering it with plastic so oil doesnt get on everything. Also, as you know, the bolt that holds the deraileur is small and easily lost and without it the bike is a paperweight so care must be taken to ensure it is included in the packing. It probably sounds a bit complicated but believe me, with some practice, it becomes much easier. I estimate it takes me about 30 minutes to pack and about 40 minutes to unpack and assemble each bike. I do this on the day/night we arrive in the hotel room or wherever we are staying. In all, not too inconvenient overall for us. By the way, the bikes we ride are from a smallish folding bike company called Origami. They are very sturdy and robust. They are a bit more on the heavy side when carrying but we rarely have to do that though because one of the great features is that when folded they can be pushed on one wheel. In fact, I often hang my backpack on the seat post and push the bike to give my back a rest. Using the 20" wheel for pushing means you dont have to worry about rough surfaces, etc. like you do when you push the folders with the small built in wheels. I hope this helps. Please reach out if you would like more information. Here is wishing you both the best. Doc
@@dr.rikhart2365Origami is a great name! But heavy sounds are not good to carry on the bus… I'm looking for a folding bike to take the bus and ride in Manhattan to my job.
They are great bikes. Great for train travel. Kills time in between connection. They ride vg alot better then one might think
I bought my dahon broadwalk 15 years ago still working
Nice vid. I like the Boardwalk best. Steel should inmprove mechanical resistance (if you take care from rusting) and has has a bit more flexing, which should give slightly smoother rides in rough city roads without compromising rigidity in flats. Interestingly the weight of both models is about the same.
Last but not least, the Boardwalk looks are nicer.
Awesome couple awesome bikes
Thanks!
I like the black one, the rack comes handy for cruising around the city
Yes, it's been very useful having the basket during city rides.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Hello Cruise and Thuong. Cool bikes. I like folding bikes because they are like a transformer and are really handy. I also wish mine's handlebar would go even lower. I have a Citizen Miami, it's steel so quite heavy but durable. I removed the front mudguard, some bolts and the rear rack to make it lighter.
I have my eyes on a Java Fit. I do prefer folding bikes without suspension, though Birdy and Brompton look really cool. I actually started watching your channel due to the folding bike shop video.
They are basically a transformer haha. I also wish the handlebar limit was a little lower. Might have to get an extender bar to try and go forward/down a bit.
I like the red one: it seems more retro
They sell then under the name Zizzo in the US. About $400 depending on model. I own one, descent bike.it has Shimano geartrain parts, I got rid of the CST ties and replaced the with Schable’s. I like the fact it has 20” wheels, makes finding tires and tubes easy. I have a rear rack on mine.
‘
I own three of them from Zizzo but only two of them I use. I live in an apartment with almost no space for bikes with wheels larger than 20 inch. My two bikes come with fenders and rear racks
Yes they are very beautiful bikes I love the red blue orange yellow green black I like all colors blue is my favorite color thank you for sharing these beautiful bikes 🌈🌪🔥💥☄️
Thanks for watching!
Dahon are very popular here in the Bay Area, CA. I have boardwalks in the past, they are a bit heavy in today's folder market. I have the Dahon Helios Aluminum, my wife has the the Bazooka (no longer avail)
The built in mudguards are really useful for sudden rains. Makes you a bit cleaner biking.heh nice bikes! You can put fabric scoop saddles as upgrade, very comfortable. Ride safe
They've been performing great in the rain we've had lately :)
Looks like no more mudguards for Hit at Dahon US
Great....stay safe
Thanks! 😁
Cool bikes, I like the black bike, it's handy.
Thanks!
The red one nice
The boardwalk is a GREAT choice. the frame will last a lifetime with TLC. Stay safe on the road!
Thanks!
Beautiful bicycles! Great brand of compact foldable bikes. Would be nice to know weight of bikes too
The red one is beautiful. Very classic
We're both fighting over it haha
@@TwoWheelCruise it’s very nice. They don’t sell it here in sg from what I searched. I’ve seen a D6 which is not as nice at that one.
I think the red one looks pretty nice with the thinner tube. Not a fan of derailleurs on folding bikes but other than that it looks really good. I would definitely take the Boardwalk and the Brompton style bike.
Internal hub sounds like a nice upgrade :)
Subscribed. Nice channel
Thanks!
I just got a new folding bike as well, thanks for sharing 💗💗💗💗💗💗
Awesome! They're a lot of fun :)
Nice
Beautiful bike from your wife. Im looking one folding bike for my girlfriend also.
Now that I’m following your channel need to say wow guys, love you now hehe. Hey what’s happen with the Dahonies? Seems you were more a Marienrer (dahon ) rider as the Hit?
We are planing to buy the mariner for my wife, I just got a great Tern verge with the purpose to have folding bikes for our travels. Maybe we can meet you guys some where in the world to share the rides and bikes passion. Sending you the best wishes
Thanks! Unfortunately we weren't able to bring them with us when we left Japan, but we really liked both of these bikes.
Nice video! I'm thinking about buying the D7. You two are a cute couple :) This is my first time watching your video - was surprised to hear Japanese.
Thanks! It's a solid bike!
Just rescued a 6 spd boardwalk from the local 2nd hand store for 20 dollars. Cool little bike that just needs a little attention to the spokes and new rubber. Would love to have one in burnt orange metallic. I will be running Kenda Kwest 20 inch x 1.25 tires for pavement only. I think an internal gear hub and belt drive would be the best not to mention cleaner. BTW all my bikes these days have kick stands and wouldn't want them any other way. Nice video.
That's a steal!
If you want a 20 inch wheel bike that will fold very compact, the Tern BYB is amazing, and you can even wheel it around like the Brompton.
But the price is not amazing: $2500 against $699 from Dahon Hit!!!
I have a Dahon P18 18 Speed I really like it.
Dahon Boardwalks are lovely!
We quickly became big fans!
@@TwoWheelCruise its a favorite by many Malaysian Foldie fans as well
Hey! Love watching another cycling couple, my husband and I would love a bike that can actually fit us both and save room in our apartment haha
How tall are you both? Are you pretty different in height?
It's really nice being able to both fit on the bike. I'm 183cm and she's 170cm
@Two Wheel Cruise One question Is there some bike bags or bike “Briefcases” sold as accessories for the bikes due to the train requirements?
You can use any rinko bag in Japan, but I think Dahon also makes more solid cases too
Do you know where I can possibly buy parts for my old dahon bike?
Also, the front of the Dahon has screw holes where you can attach a Brompton bag adapter
Yep, we're gonna have to experiment with some front mounts.
I liked the bikes, I don't know if there are these models in Brazil.
Do you the length of the crank arms.
Under the Dahon Logo which is on the frame of the red Boardwalk bike, there are two screwholes (you have to take of the logo plate) where you can mount a klickfix or with an adapter a Brompton mount and ad all kinds of bags and baskets. Pretty cool since they don't affect the stearing since it is attachted to the frame. Although the load capacity is quite limited.
Thanks for the video - well done :-)
PS: Please, keep away from the Boardwalk bike and leave it to Thuong, your cloth colors just don't match with the beautiful red. ;-)
Haha she's claiming the Boardwalk for herself and loves the color. The front mount sounds interesting, we're gonna have to test that out.
Nice bike and Good Review. Beside that: Thoung really Looks beautiful in that dress!!!
Thanks!
I like the red color because it attractive.
It sure is :)
My only bike is also a folding bike because of limited space at home. It’s a nice one though, Tiagra cassette, hydraulic disc brake and carbon fibre frame 😎
If you only have once bike, might as well make it really nice :) I'm curious how well the higher end spec folding bikes ride.
❤️❤️❤️
Good
Fixies we’re Always the most popular Bike back we’re I used to lived but after seeing that red folding bike I’ll have to more into them
It's a big change from a fixie, but liking it so far
The Harry quin portable e bike seems interesting for traveling.
Sounds interesting, but not sure I'd want to have to worry about the hassle of charging and bringing the charger with me between locations. Especially between countries.
I have a Dahon bike, and they are solidly made. Mine is an old 10 year old design using 8-speed Shimano IGH. Comes with fenders, racks, etc. I also have a breakable (not folding) Dahon Flo which is an MTB that is just 11kg. It's a 26er.
These are old (way back 30 years or so) designs. Nothing wrong with that, but there are lighter and more flexible to upgrade models.
Personally, I would rather go to Tern. Mine is the fast 26er. 11 speeds x compact crank. Very fast. There are also other models to pick.
But if you look outside these models, there are other lesser known-brands like Crius, FnHon, 3Sixty, which are also very good and at 1/2 to even 1/4 the price! There are now Brompton clones for example that have 6-7 speeds regular cogs! Brompton makes only up to 2 cogs + IGH. You have to go outside Brompton to go more than 2 cogs. Or have 3rd party mechanics to convert them for you.
Thanks for sharing!
I got a 2012 Dahon Speed P8, 8 speeds but now fitted with 2 chainrings up front.
Wife rode it in Bali over 2 weeks. I did Cambodia also.
The stock bikes gears are insufficient for touring and hills. OK for flat or rolling paths. Once you hv luggage n big distances, it gets harder. Oh don't have the handlepost too high. Stresses the headset bearings. A friend's bike had the bearings crushed beyond repair.
Thanks for sharing! That's reassuring and we're hoping to do some rides with these in Bali ourselves. Definitely would like to put some more gear range on though. And we always slam the stems / handlepost haha.
@@TwoWheelCruise I even sawed off 2ins of the handlepost. The clamp does get loose after some years. Much stiffer, no creaks and minimal folding issues. Best to get a bike that has an outside fold post. Those in-between the fold are cumbersome. Yr cockpit gets scratched easily. Thus even Litepro are making aftermarket outside fold H posts
Thanks for the suggestions!
I'll be curious to see how long that Shimano flat face derailleur holds out. That's a derailleur that one often finds on big box store bikes here in the US (although one sees Shimano Tourney more and more).
We'll be doing some longer term reviews as well
Boardwalk is/was available in USA.
How much does the Boardwalk cost in Japan?
Is good
hi Two Wheel Cruise! i am on the fence on acquiring a Dahon Boardwalk and am hoping that your opinion to my query could help sway me. is the Boardwalk suitable for a person of height 175cm? would the rider be able to extend their knee fully and with enough space to not hit the handle bar during turns?
Yes, Dahon bikes are large. I am 183cm and had full leg extension.
You can buy a seatpost wheel on aliexpress, So you can roll it around in the folded position.
Might need to pick up one of those
I chose a Tern Verge X11 2021.
I love folding bike. Not as fast as road bike but great for cities
dahons are popular in the u.s. among sailors, they have stainless steel hardware that does not rust easily..
Interesting
I have a Brompton and a Tern Link D8. The link definitely rides better and is easier to get fixed due to using more standard parts.
Yeah, we instantly noticed a huge difference with these bikes compared to the Brompton clone. A lot more comfortable with the larger size and wheels.
@@TwoWheelCruise I use my Tern Link for every day riding and the Brompton when I’m going shorter distances.
@@andythousand345Link D8 seems similar to Dahon Marine D8, and Dahon offers a 10% discount for the first purchase… I'm looking for a folding bike to use daily in Manhattan after a bus commute
It'd be cool if they made a special backpack for these.
That would be nifty
is it possible if you put the basket on the broadwalk?
Yeah, if you move the rack over to it to support it.
Be interested to see you compare it to the Brompton Clone.
I think we will make a comparison video :)
I have the Boardwalk in Hot Springs, Arkansas
Nice!
The Brompton foldable bike is growing popular among businesses people in major cities in the U.S.; especially since they can fold it up and carry it with them on trains and into their office
Folding bikes are an interesting concept; but can't mod a folding bike like you can a regular bike, regular bikes are much more sturdy as well and can better handle rough terrain
Hard to beat a regular bike, but we're planning to do a lot of travelling in the near future which is really difficult with full size bikes.
There's a huge Brompton modding scene, especially in Asia!
For folding bikes, I would have gone for the Tern folding bike. Specifically, the Link D8 or Link i7.
They have better build quality and components.
I had to upgrade my Dahon after a few months of riding. I suggest upgrading the Derailleur system on these bikes, you will thank me later.
Thanks! We're looking forward to making some upgrades after the parts wear out :)
Funny thing about that. Tern was started by David Hon's (founder of DaHon) son.
I find Dahon range are more affordable and Tern are pricer. I am using Dahon D8 and has no problem with it.
@@adinyonz
What's the model of your bike? There are a lot of Dahon bikes that have the D8 in their name. Also some models have better gearing. My Dahon Qix D8 had the worst derailleur, after riding it for a year, (on and off) I had to replace it. And I am just a regular rider, I don't push the bike to it's limits. After I upgraded to the Shimano Claris derailleur, my Qix D8 had not only better shifting, but rode better as well. The Dahon bike I got for my lady has a better derailleur and her bike was cheaper than mine. 😆

Yup :-)

I like Little Red.
Thanks! and nice name idea :)
Hello, can make some videos traveling in train stations. How to transfer these folding bikes in train stations.
Yeah, we want to try that
@@TwoWheelCruise Thanks Cruise. Want to cycle around Japan using folding bikes. Hope these folding bike easy to access in train stations.
8:00 Have you tried to roll it with the seat on the highest position?
No, you need the landing gear accessory to roll it smoothly

how about Red cherry and Black berry? isn't it a nice name for your two cute bikes?
Thanks for all of your ideas!
Cruz you didn't say which kind of shifter you prefer

@@TwoWheelCruise usually I try to fight the algorithm and comment a lot, but I've been busy lately. I like the black one more than the red and I hope to see more videos of those bikes on the channel.
The red is way better then the black !
I have been thinking about folding bikes because they are the only bikes that can fit into the trunk of a car or SUV.
They seem really nice for that purpose. Too bad I no longer have a car to test that out haha
Since Bianchi is a big name and hot in Japan, and Bianchi Fretta (foldable, OEM of birdy City) can only be found in Japan, I thought it might be interesting to bring overseas. Don't you find it cool!
I didn't know about these, but they certainly looks unique.
I'm not really a fan of folding bikes with derailleur gears as well. Here in the UK we do have Dahon bikes but they are super expensive often massively overpriced compared to their competitors. Looking at that black Dahon, it has a low cost freewheel, Dahon branded low end rear derailleur, Dahon branded CST tyres (in fact you can still see the CST branding on the sidewalls so the Dahon bit is just a quick sticker). Those sort of folding bikes sell for around £150-200 in the UK. It should be pointed out though that derailleurs are very easily damaged because they are so close to the ground. In the UK and Japan this is slightly improved in that the derailleur is on the right side and the pavements etc are on the left but in many markets they drive on the right so the derailleur is much more at risk of hitting the kerb. 20" folding bikes are very low geared typically so it becomes even more important to have a freehub and cassette with a 11 tooth cog for improved high gearing over the 14 tooth of a freewheel which makes the bikes very, very low geared. Also for folding frames it does seem that steel works better for hinges, it seems better against fatigue so for me the cromoly based Dahon is the better bike. Both bikes are sub acceptable spec for me based on their low end components. I think Dahon have one assembly plant in China but they are mainly made for them by other companies. Fuji-ta have made some of their bikes and I think Flying Pigeon made some Dahon bikes for sale in China. In the UK we get Dahon bikes assembled by a company in Bulgaria from frames imported from Asia somewhere. Dalloy is a commercial term (Dahon+alloy) it will be generic 6061 aluminum and the extra cable on the Dahon frame has shown to be useless and a pointless design.
As you can tell from my text not a Dahon fan at all because the prices are well above the quality of the product you actually get. I would suggest to anyone to check out what the same money will get you elsewhere. Be careful with your money.
Actually a quick check shows they don't seem to be available in the UK anymore directly but there are a few German companies willing to send to the UK. A low end Dahon with entry level parts is about £700 delivered to the UK making it about 3-4x more expensive than a similar bike in the UK.
Something like this is a good option in the UK. Carrera Transit. It has a 3 speed Nexus so almost zero maintenance gears and a lifetime warranty on the frame and forks. Very abuse-able easy to maintain bike. The white frame gives good visibility and Halfords are everywhere so where-ever you go you will be able to get issues sorted with it in the UK. A far better option than a gimmicky derailleur based folding bike that might cost twice as much over here.

Thanks for sharing your insights from your experience! We're still new to folding bikes and have a lot to learn.
That's an interesting point about the derailer side with the directional side of the road, I never really thought about that before.
The Dahon HIT in Japan sells for about 40,000 yen or £270, so it seems quite reasonable compared to your suggested price range. Though I think it is more expensive in the UK and US because of extra shipping / volume.
not my kind of bike but the Boardwalk looks pretty sweet.
They're growing on us :)
Canon started in USA ACTUALKY.
I suggest to name your two bikes as Red Velvet and Black Forest.
Thanks for all of your ideas!
is it suitable also for kids ?
To an extent, I think so
Much as I like the Dahon K3 Plus, it's not sized for someone with a small Asian build like me. The front handlebar is way too high and non-adjustable. 😥
I do wish the handlebar could go a little lower..
dahon is our local name of leaf or leaves here in the philippines.
That's interesting to hear it has a different meaning there.
