  • N1CLC, W6RWS, and I joined forces for an evening/nighttime activation of Palomar High-Point. 40m was on fire with contacts across the country, and 20m CW yielded a couple of nice DX contacts as well as a number of stateside QSOs.
    We capped the evening with a little night photography before making the trek back down the hill.

    This is great. So cool to hear and see the code. I'm in the process of learning. SOTA is my goal eventually. SSB soon but CW when I get my legs. It was great to see and hear the conversation. Thank you for all your contributions! Yes this is an older one but so am I. 73

    Always love it when the operator busts his buns to get that DX QSO in the logs, no matter how many repeats that it takes. Solid commitment to get that QSO, makes them memorable.

    Up here in Idaho, we have dozens of fire lookouts that can be activated… there are a few you can rent for the night and sleep in. It’s always been my aim to activate a few. I have the Jeep, my KX2, and some other small qrp radios, and I’ve run out of excuses. Great video Adam… 72 de W7UDT (dit dit)

    Hi Adam,
    Finally watched the video and I was the last SSB contact before you went to CW, but you cut it just before I gave you the 10 over signal report from Philly. :-) Stay safe.

      The fire lookout towers are awesome! Many are maintained and used actively, and as historical sites. Those that work in the towers act both as fire watches, and as ambassadors to the towers and to fire safety. Really love them too 😁

    Dude, so cool. I found your channel not long ago while getting into the hobby and looking for info on SOTA ops. I'm also a trail runner, and I'm hoping to build one of your antennas to bring with me on some long mountain adventures in the Wasatch! I'll keep an ear to the ground, hope to do a S2S someday. What was the capacity of the big Lithium battery? How much power were you running and how long did the battery last?

    • @K6ARK
      @K6ARK  3 года назад +2

      It's a 12 Ah Bioenno and typically lasts 2-4 hours depending on power output and duty cycle.

      @@K6ARK Thats some battery! All day? 100W? blimey. I was thinking of getting an FT-891 and running it on 5-10W . That thing uses a HUGE amount of juice, even on RX. The brochure says 2amps. I'll have to sell a kidney to get a KX2 or KX3 (I already have an FT817ND)...

    • @K6ARK
      @K6ARK  3 года назад

      @@G7VFY yes, about 2 A on receive is accurate. The final amplifier in SSB rigs are inefficient even when idling. Still, that's 5-6 hours of receiving with a 12Ah battery. Transmit current and duty cycle varies quite a bit. I sometimes dial the power back to 50w for longer life. For drive-up activations I've also got a 60 Ah LiFePO4 🤘😆👍
