  • I've taught 7 million people how to knit. (OK maybe not all 7 million. At least a few thousand? A few hundred? Anyway.)
I've dug deep into the comment trenches and compiled the most asked questions in my most viewed, how to knit video. Some simple, some not so simple, some just fun. If I didn't answer your question, give me three more years, please.

Your video was the first one I found when I decided to learn knitting, and I'm glad you kept things super simple because it was a big factor why I didn't give up and just kept trying. I love that you didn't even mention needle types or yarn sizes or throw any knitting jargon like straight/circular knitting because my beginner brain would've been overwhelmed with information, and I might've overthought everything into complete failure. So I love that it's as simple as literally picking up 2 needles and a ball of yarn and showing us how to knit. Way less intimidating than other beginner knitting tutorial videos out there. So thank you so much :)

I'm glad you chose the simple beginning cast-on method! I came home a few months ago with needles and yarn after getting marketed, found your video, and started learning. The simple cast-on made it so easy to practice over and over until I got the hang of it and was ready to start my first project. Now, I'm working on my first cabling project! I also recently learned speed knitting and purling from you. You're a great teacher!

I've gone through a ton of beginner knitting videos and yours are BY FAR my favorite and the ones i keep coming back to. Great job explaining everything and showing everything really slowly, and you're also just personable and likeable, so don't sell yourself short. You deserve 7M views!

22:36 You stated that “you probably only watched a couple of seconds and moved on to another person’s video” just the opposite! I really enjoy your videos! You taught me how to knit and are always so relaxed and remind people to not take it so seriously. Thank you!😊

Ever since you taught me how to knit seven or eight years ago or so, I’ve been enjoying fiber crafts tremendously. I rewatched your speed knitting and purling recently and chuckled at myself because I do it exactly like you do on the video. 😅. I’m glad you continue engaging with us on this platform. You rock!!!

what helps with tightness is to make sure to not knit on the tapered tips of the needle; don't pull it snug on the tip. That's what I did when I first started!

Yes. Hi. Thank you very much for your video that you made on how to knit and purl. If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t be able to knit. I’m pretty sure I did comment on that video. It’s been a year since I’ve seen that started knitting in quarantine I was 12 now I’m 13 and I’ve been knitting small gifts for my family and friends. And currently I’m knitting myself some socks first time using the needles with a wire. So thank you

I did the simplet cast on I think once, got frustrated, found the long tail cast on, got frustrated again because I could never figure out how much length I needed and would have to rip it out again and again. Now I use a knitted cast on and it's wonderful.
Cracked up at your "thinking about Walmart" thing. Love your humor!

I never knitted before and decided to pick it up as a new hobby this year. I've used your videos to get started and in just two weeks I made a beautiful scarf that I love! It was so easy! It was only straight knitting, but I'm proud to have actually finished it. Thanks for the tutorial. Now I'm going to try a hat or something that seems harder to me. I still haven't done pulling or any designs or knitting in the round. I'm trying to figure it out though. Any tips on how to play around and test these skills? With the regular knitting I just started, decided it would be a scarf, and just did it.

I am so grateful for your casting on method. The reason I never wanted to knit was because all of the weird casting on videos I've seen that made it look too complicated. Your video, game me the confidence to try knitting. I'm on my second knitting project now and I really enjoy it. so thank you.

Hey RJ it’s because of your simple cast on that has taught me knitting and a couple of your other beginner videos I watched from u cause the cast on was a complicated method with all the other ways of casting on the backwards loop cat on was so simple and got me started with knitting and it definitely leads to other cast on methods like now I can say I use the long tale cast on now as my preferred cast on unless a pattern I’m doing tells me otherwise but I would definitely like to say thank you RJ for that cast on a your videos on how to knit and purl cause I was ready to quit and now I can say I’ve been knitting for 4 years now or maybe more and learned a lot of other knitting methods and techniques in the past and learning newer techniques are now easy to catch onto and because of you RJ I can now say I’m an advanced knitter and like most knitter’s I’m totally addicted to knitting and love to knit 😊😊😊😊😊. Everyone out there that are beginners and learning the basics don’t give up keep on trying if u really wanna learn it if u keep trying and not give up u will eventually get it down for sure and u like be happy u didn’t quit promise! Thanks Again so much RJ and happy knitting to You and all my fellow knitters here,

The simple cast on was the first one I learned when I was a kid, it is easy to do and remember, so I think it's great to teach a beginning knitter, and it is still used in some patterns, so not useless, as they continue on their knitting journey they will learn the different methods.

I learned how to knit from your tutorials; I've now done socks, hats, a scarf, mittens, and a couple sweaters. It seems odd watching other methods now; I knit continental and purl using the Swedish speed purl from your videos.

Fiber depends on what you are making. In the US, if you are donating hats, scarfs, afghans, ect, they must be acrylic, from nonsmoking homes. Some charities also specify pet free. Until that changes, I use acrylic. For family snd friends, I am trying to use natural plant and animal fibers. All have their Evo issues.

I'd argue that, given the very large carbon footprint that livestock produce by virtue of what it takes to house and feed them, wool yarn is not more sustainable than synthetic yarn. But that's a simple perspective toward a very nuanced issue... just thought I'd contribute as I'm quite passionate about sustainability, especially in the form of moving away from animal agriculture. Of course, synthetic is kind of terrible (I think we can all agree that plastic is gross), so I do advocate for using plant fibers exclusively, or whenever possible.
Side note, because it seems to be a question that is raised each time I mention the carbon footprint of animal agriculture: small farms | organic farms are not excluded from having large carbon footprints. In fact, they are arguably worse (in terms of carbon footprint) than conventional animal agriculture because the largest contribution to animal farming's footprint is actually loss of biodiversity and carbon sinks via deforestation and habitat degredation that comes with creating vast fields of grass for livestock. Unless a farm is following a very very good regenerative farming production process, I would be very cautious about animal fibers.
