thank god someone else noticed how WEIRD the swear word usage was in this book😭😭 "microcock" in a high fantasy is an absolutely wild choice, it takes away all believability and urgency to the story, this book had SUCH strange wording and phrasing throughout the whole thing, and then it tried to be egregiously poetic in the most bizarre places. complete agree that this needed about 5 more beta reads especially from people who have a much more critical eye/ear
One of the things I've found in the Romance/fantasy genre is the male love interest always does the same awful things the "villain" does but he's this tall sexy muscular shadow daddy. And the antagonist is always described as one of if not multiple of these things, short, bald, old, greasy, fat, small d etc. And it's so frustrating for me because if the author didn't try to make him as "disgusting and ugly" as humanly possible people would love him because he acts the same way as the beloved shadow daddy. And this is something that happens consistently
I think a lot of authors forget that you can have a villain whose sexy as hell but disgusting in other ways. Plus, I don't understand why so many MMC have to be awful and it's portrayed as hot.

With insults specifically, if you use one every other sentence it loses its emphasis. My mom doesn’t swear often so when she calls a fly a rat bastard after trying to kill it for five minutes, it’s very meaningful. If you use it in a book, swearing can tell you things about the character and who or what they’re swearing at. Like, if they’re cursing bc they tripped while running away from something, you can ask a lot of questions about that. What words are they using? Are they swearing because they tripped, they’re mad at themselves for tripping or there’s going to be negative consequences if they get caught by this thing they’re running from?Is this something that happens often because they have bad coordination and/or some other issue that affects the way their legs move? Is it surprising to the character because they rarely trip while running? There’s a lot there to work with, especially if you’re a nerd like me who enjoys asking questions related to small actions that characters make, or aspects of the world. That’s one of the best parts of writing for me and I know it won’t be true for everyone but it can be very fun.
I used to think creators on RUclips were exaggerating about the algorithm and positive reviews, but then I paid attention and...yeah, my algorithm NEVER gives me positive videos. I have to look on a creator's page and go through to find anything positive. Take this video - this is my first video of yours I'm watching and the algorithm probably only gave me it because a. negative and b. I watched another (also negative! Fancy that) review of this book just a couple of days ago by someone I'm subscribed to. So I think maybe people aren't lying and they DO want to see positive videos...but also they're not going to defy the algorithm to go looking for them and you really can't blame creators for leaning into what gets them views. Bills need to be paid and all that. So yeah, I sympathise - and also I like book rants, so in the end I win. Also what you said about fantasy swearing was really interesting. I have to admit, I thought you made up the word sparkleshit as a synonym for purple prose at first... (In retrospect, I am so sorry) It doesn't sound like a fantasy swear word at all, it sounds like what you said - the author inserting edge. Our swearwords come from things that are taboo - so if the author put more thought into it, the swearing could have been... idk, moon-related, or dragon corpse-related. Which sounds way more fun.
I DNF'ED this at chapter eight. The revenge kill in the first few chapters was so unnecessary and try-hard, and I could already tell I wouldn't like the protagonist. It's crazy this book is 700 pages long. The plot sounds like a lot of "and then this happened."

I was captivated by the premise of this book but the writing was wild. Hey I like how you call us out about doing stuff while listening to this review I was making kimchi. Also. I'm very glad I didn't pick up this book and I'm sorry you had to
8:50 I really like this point. Fourth Wing felt like it was written by a preteen who just discovered swear words and thought they were cool. There’s a finesse to writing swearing in fiction. When it comes to how to use swear words effectively, I always think back to Bojack Horseman, where the writers only used “fuck” once a season to hammer home intense, shocking moments in Bojack’s life. And yeah, creating good fantasy swear words that don’t sound stupid is surprisingly difficult. I’m writing an animal fiction and trying to think up swear words cats would say fried my brain.
Hearing the description is painful. Like why does it sound like I'm being sold something. The first sentence on the first page should be the thing that hooks people in. This honestly shows that whoever wrote this had no intention of writing a decent story, but wanted someone that'll look and sound good on social media.
I've only come across one instance of dragons in space working, but I feel like dragons-as-moons (or their eggs) could work in a serious story if either the world physically wasn't like our world (like the heavens was a physical plane above were the regular people lived) or they were treated as the eldritch beings they obviously would be if they were *literally moon-sized*. From what you've described, these dragon-moons were just slapped onto the background as a plot device without any more thought given to how it would affect the world. Like, do the dragon-moons affect the tides? Did they disrupt the planet's orbit since they weren't there since the beginning?? (The unserious example of dragons in space is from Terry Pratchett, so you know it's going to be absurd, but also it wasn't that absurd because the dragons still followed the pre-established rules of the Disc, and they were less "flying in space" and more "gas-powered slingshot through space" so while it's ridiculous, it isn't breaking the laws of Disc-physics)
@bbo7002 I completely forgot that myth about dragons hatching from the moon! (Though it was more allegory, wasn't it? I have a hard time discerning what's actually magic and what isn't in Game of Thrones) I wonder if Parker got some inspiration from that as well 🤔
The dragons in the Pern series work as well, but that's because they're well established as being able to teleport and can hold their breath up to about 15 minutes. So they essentially have a low cost "launch".
So my most anticipated book of the year was S.A. Mclean's The Phoenix Keeper and... I was so tempted to to DNF it too many times. It was supposed to be a cozy romantasy but the actual romance didn't start up until like 75% of the way through, most people seemed to enjoy the book but I would be curious what yout opinion is.
My problem with this books is that i felt like all the set up in the first 1/3rd of the book had like no connection to the last 2/3rds? I listened to it on audiobook and it was getting so annoying by the end, the last 2/3rds was just random romance and fucking around doing nothing and then in like the last 30 mins something happens to tie things together. About 1/2 of this book should have neen trimmed ouy
I’m so mad I brought this book. I used to say away from romantasy but I been trying to be open. I actually enjoyed “A Fate Inked in Blood” and “Games Gods Play” it wasn’t perfect but it was still enjoyable. But most romantasy books I haven’t been finishing and this book is one of them. I been trying to give more fantasy female writers a chance but so far the only ones I really like is Jacqueline Carey and NK Jemisin. If anyone has any recommendations for good female fantasy authors please let me know. I love the way Brandon Sanderson does the romance I like it to be in the background but you feel they care for each other.
@@JaeGemini I don't know about romantasy, but Diana Wynne Jones is a fantastic fantasy author. I've only read some of her children/YA books. She does have more mature books, but I can't haven't read them yet.
The cover of this book caught my eye since I was on the hunt for a good fantasy book, as I hadn't read any in a while. Read the plot synopsis, and saw how damn LONG the book was, and went, "Hahah NOPE! Nevermind!" Glad I made that choice. When will that idiot SJM's curse of "Sassy, edgy assassin/warrior FMC and bad sex scenes and SA" shit end?
There are some interesting concepts that I actually liked but it was too much going on and barely stitched together plot, from hearing the gods singing and the interesting magic system and the other that she transforms into, to dragons…Idk lol
Listening to u read the synopsis and like. Why does it feel like book synopsis be giving away TOO MUCH nowadays. Its like with movie trailers recently. After a while they tell me everything and I dont even feel like watching the movie lol.
The word synopsis stands for 'plot summary' so a synopsis isbdefinitely meant to give away the plot. However, I think that book BLURBS have become lousy, and no longer tease a plot properly - usually the blurb is like one tagline, and then you they had to add the whole synopsis in if the reader wants to know anything.
I got the book today and read around ten pages before I decided to put it down and never pick it up again. Your review was the only negative one I could find, which really shocked me because this book is AWFUL. It's written like wattpad fanfiction. These "booktok" books are destroying the book market.
The premise and some of the bits and pieces sound good and it's a shame it really is just a lot of build up. I still am heavily interested in reading it for myself.
@4:27 Not me doing my dishes while I listen to this 👀 Maybe it's just your style but I feel like I take more notes (on writing) from bad book reviews. Edit: whhhhhhhy are there almost 100 chapters in this book? Nonsense.
I genuinely cannot follow what is going on. I am an MVP at following coocoo crazy stories while writing myself, it just plays in the background, I could probably give you a summary of this book, but what the f*ck (I'm not sure if you're allowed to swear in a comment section) like I cannot follow this story at all
I haven't read the physical book, but the audiobook is awful. The constant use of alliteration delivered by a narrator with all the inflection of a corpse was tortuous. I'm not sure I made it past the 30 minute mark before I returned it to Audible.
I just listened through that premise and I was just trying to type something up and I legitimately had to stop and look at my phone in bewilderment because you had to KEEP GOING?! I don’t understand long-winded and drawn-out Goodreads blurbs because they tell me so much about things I barely care about. They struggle in balancing the art of capturing interest and giving details about the material most of the time with these books and it’s dizzying!!! I avoid them altogether because it’s just TOO MUCH!!!! Let me breathe!!! Hats off to you for the delivery, D. I think it would’ve taken me 120 takes to get through it.

And yeah, creating good fantasy swear words that don’t sound stupid is surprisingly difficult. I’m writing an animal fiction and trying to think up swear words cats would say fried my brain.
im so excited to listen to this, i DNF this book but still wanna know what happens loll 😊
We😂love hearing you suffer as we make breakfast too
That is the longest synopsis I’ve ever heard, and I still know *nothing* of the plot.
I read the book and still know nothing of the plot
I saw this book on Vinted, I am glad I have been warned for it 😂
Gods I'm so excited. I hated this book
Hearing the description is painful. Like why does it sound like I'm being sold something. The first sentence on the first page should be the thing that hooks people in. This honestly shows that whoever wrote this had no intention of writing a decent story, but wanted someone that'll look and sound good on social media.
Not going to lie, I found this book so boring and not clear in the world design. I was so disappointed!
@@xoPotatoTreexo ....wait, dragons as moons? moons as eggs? a melted crown??? what is this, game of thrones?? 👀
Your hate just fueled my walk and I’m on a 103 day streak of 10,000 steps. Keep hating!
That’s impressive!! Keep going with your streak!
Vacuuming at the mo ...
Hey now, give yourself more credit than that; you’re super cute ☺️
There are some interesting concepts that I actually liked but it was too much going on and barely stitched together plot, from hearing the gods singing and the interesting magic system and the other that she transforms into, to dragons…Idk lol
Soooo quicksilver next?
I’ve never heard of quicksilver actually
You're reading Gachiakuta!?
Yeah I’m gonna do a video on it soon. Might start writing it tonight if I finish my homework.
The sypnosis why?? 😂 is it so long?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oop, I don't think I even finished reading the synopsis when I first stumbled upon it. Synopsis that tend to ramble don't really hold my attention.
Nonsense.
You take notes!?!? Am I supposed to be giving homework?
Fast food and fast book food suck lol
I have a weakness for Vera’s Burgers tho
What happen to healthy romances?? I've read a lot of these popular romantasies and hardly any of them had a couple who have a good relationship.
i'm so tired of these "badass" assasin mcs that end up needing to be saved all the time
I genuinely cannot follow what is going on. I am an MVP at following coocoo crazy stories while writing myself, it just plays in the background, I could probably give you a summary of this book, but what the f*ck (I'm not sure if you're allowed to swear in a comment section) like I cannot follow this story at all
I couldn’t either 😭 also: I think you can swear in comment sections. People swear at me all the time.
Where are the positive reviews? I dont think I ever saw one
lol cause people don’t watch them.
@@dontfretreadbooks
😂
I was captivated by the premise of this book but the writing was wild. I had to douvle check that it was a woman writing it because there was such a 'men writing female characters' vibe that it put me off from the beginning. I think I got 20 or 30% in before giving up, I really couodnt push through it
